Shit help, Dd4 just fell from bunk bed

Heyjude20 · 11/02/2020 00:05

Omg.. I don’t know what to do. Currently on a sleeper train home.

Assumed dd4 would be ok on top bunk as they have saftey bars.

She’s just fell in her sleep!! Massive thud. She cried obviously but is still asleep.

Wtf do I do??

You need to get the guard to call 999, stop the train at the next station and have medics attend to her. You cannot be sure she's ok

Get a grip - child is conscious and not vomiting.

Be watchful and vigilant and maybe phone 111- they might even be able,to male an appointment.

When do you get home?

mynamesmrdiggety · 11/02/2020 02:04

Must have been a right shock!

Sounds like she's ok though. I wouldn't be calling 999 or stopping the train, that's madness. Just keep an eye on her.

bettybattenburg · 11/02/2020 05:55

How is she now op ?

FrenchFancie · 11/02/2020 06:05

Honestly if she is still fine on waking I would just get her checked at a walk in when you get home.

Seriously who thinks a CT scan is necessary for a 5 foot fall without any obvious signs of injury?!?

I think a few of the pp responses are a bit dramatic to be honest, given your updates about her waking easily, talking normally etc. I'd keep her in bed with you, monitor carefully (Maybe set an alarm and rouse/check on her a couple of times in the night) then get her checked over at a walk in or you gp practise once home. The same thing happened to me but on a ferry at this age, I was fine. Fingers crossed that your dd will be too.

HelgaHere1 · 11/02/2020 06:22

She sounds fine.
She would have been relaxed and floppy if asleep so probably less likely to break something than if she'd been awake and put an arm out to save herself.

Planetzog · 11/02/2020 06:22

I fell off a (high) top bunk when sleeping as a young adult. I felt slightly sore but was 100% fine. Think being floppy helps. Try not to worry, think there are some very OTT reactions on here.

foamrolling · 11/02/2020 06:23

There's probably a first aider on the train. I would see if you can find one as a first step - just in case anything does worsen with her and you need help. How long til you get home? I'd definitely get her checked out as soon as you're able to given she's fallen from more than her own height.

Heyjude20 · 11/02/2020 06:35

She’s absolutely fine. She’s woke up happy. She thinks she fell down while her sister was helping her 🙈 she didn’t, we was all asleep 🙈

DivGirl · 11/02/2020 06:39

Glad she's okay OP! Some of the posters on this thread are mental - 999 for a tumble from a bunk bed?!

Mumdiva99 · 11/02/2020 06:55

Glad she's ok. X

sashh · 11/02/2020 07:10

You need to tell the staff on the train OP At the very least they need to put it in their accident book. And if they are doing their job properly inform other parents to keep children in the lower bunks.

There should also be a first aider.

BikeRunSki · 11/02/2020 07:10

Just check that her eyes are reacting to light. Do you have a phone torch? If so, shine it in her eyes and see if the pupils get smaller, tans it away and see if they get bugged. If they do, then that is another symptom of concussion ruled out.
(I’m a first sided).

Bring asleep probably helped hugely, as she would have been relaxed when she hit the ground.

Heyjude20 · 11/02/2020 07:26

Just checked her eyes and they are fine! X

BikeRunSki · 11/02/2020 07:40

@Heyjude20 - that’s brilliant. Keep an eye on her for 48 hours for signs of nausea, sickness, dizziness , headaches, anything leaking out of her ears. If age shows these symptoms take her to a&e, be vigilant for the next couple of weeks, but it sounds like she has quite literally bounced back.

BikeRunSki · 11/02/2020 07:41

Do tell the staff on the train though, so that they can reappraise their risk assessments.

onlyforaminute · 11/02/2020 07:42

Kids fall out of bunk beds. Some of the posters here are insane. No wonder a&e is full! 999?!

Observe her. Any disorientation, sickness, excessive sleepiness then take her in. If she is walking fine, saying nothing hurts, eating and drinking fine, etc then she is likely fine. A&e are not going to give her a ct scan without reason! They will probably shine lights in her eyes and do a few reflex tests.

Please don't blame yourself. There were bars so you thought you had assessed the risk.

LolaLollypop · 11/02/2020 07:46

You done the right thing OP. Observations, waking her up again and keeping an eye on her. Glad she seems unscathed.

I would definitely mention it to the Cally staff though. I travelled on the sleeper last year (an older model) and was sure they had a bar or something to prevent people falling out the top bunk?

Binterested · 11/02/2020 07:52

Hope all is ok. Dd fell out of her bunk bed at about age 7. She landed head first on a wooden box by the bed and remained in a headstand position with her legs up the wall which is how she was when I got up there from my room. The thud has woken me up. It was the most extraordinary thing. She didn’t wake up!

I have no idea how she did it. But she was absolutely fine - no damage done. I didn’t take her to hospital - but she was totally fine. This was years ago so clearly no lasting impacts. Hope the same for your DD.

Urkiddingright · 11/02/2020 07:59

Glad she’s ok. This happened to me as a child at my cousin’s house, for some reason her bunk didn’t have safety rails! I had a shocking bruise on my hip and woke up screaming but I was fine. It’s OTT to drag 999 into it unless they are showing obvious signs of head injury, it’s usually absolutely fine.

catinb0oots · 11/02/2020 08:01

999? CT Scan?

Fuck me some posters on this thread are insane

smashstore · 11/02/2020 08:16

I'm glad she was ok overnight OP. It must have been a horrible night for you worrying and waking to check on her! You did absolutely the right thing though, some of the suggestions upthread are batshit.

ddraigygoch · 11/02/2020 08:58

I can't believe someone would mention a CT scan 😂

MrsEricBana · 11/02/2020 08:59

^This. Glad she seems ok. Horrible shock for you and her.

Shookethtothecore · 11/02/2020 09:04

I would bet that the CT scan poster is American. I have an American relative and the things they scan for in hospital and reaction to illness baffles me sometimes. But I guess if the insurance demands it you get use to that level of hysteria. You have done exactly what I would of done, glad she’s ok x
