Worried about tomorrow's school run

Mangoxmangox · 10/02/2020 20:55

This morning my partner took my DD to school. He worked from home today due to the crappy weather. Then he collected her this afternoon. The wind has been terrible but it started heavily snowing this afternoon. He was 20 minutes late to collect her along with many other parents. The traffic was really bad this afternoon and the school received many calls due to this. They sent out an email to say in exceptionally bad weather only then they will close

Tomorrow it's giving 45-50mph winds with showers again. I'm abit worried about tomorrow morning. I don't think the school will shut. But we will be walking. It's an ok walk usually and we enjoy it. But I'm so worried the paths will be slippery and the wind will be too strong. We have to walk through a park with a river and loads of trees etc. I'll also have a toddler with me.

It's impossible to get a taxi at that time. I just get this feeling it's not going to be safe but the school can't obviously focus on everyone's individual situation. It's extremely rare for it to be this bad. What should I do? My DD is 4. Thanks!

Then don’t go. If you are able to be at home tomorrow take a snow day.

Simonsaysitschristmas · 10/02/2020 20:57

Hmm, I am normally all for getting to school no matter what. However, if it’s really bad and you have to turn around I wouldn’t feel too bad with her only being 4.

Surely if it’s that bad they will close as staff won’t be able to drive in? If they can drive in and it stays open then I think you’ll have to walk. I know it’s not ideal especially with a toddler but that’s what’s expected. I’m dreading this as my child has been diagnosed with a medical condition and I doubt she’d manage to walk the 40 mins to her school without a low blood sugar episode nowadays.

PETRONELLAS · 10/02/2020 20:59

If it really is settling snow surely they will close. She’s 4. Don’t put yourself through the stress of all that.
I’m very snow averse and very pro attendance.

flowerycurtain · 10/02/2020 21:00

Jeez they're hardly forecasting 10 inches.

Just wear sensible clothes and crack on.

DaanSaaf · 10/02/2020 21:00

God, keep her off.

Tinty · 10/02/2020 21:01

I would never ever normally say this, but keep her off.

I wouldn’t want to walk anywhere with the wind as it has been, definitely not with a 4 year old and snow as well, it will be quite dangerous I would think.

Where is it snowing? We have just had ridiculously heavy rain and terribly strong winds. Are you in Scotland?

Disneydarlings · 10/02/2020 21:02

At the age of 4 I would stay at home. They learn through play at this age you could do some reading and word/number games with them if you think they will be missing anything.

TheoriginalLEM · 10/02/2020 21:02

I've camped on exmoor in 50mph winds - it was a noisy night but nothing much happened. We did however pack up and go home the next day as well its No fun huddled in a tent in the pissing down rain.

I'd be staying home with my 4yr old if the paths were icy, that would be my concern.

Mangoxmangox · 10/02/2020 21:03

It's stopped snowing now so the paths have melted slightly. I am guessing it's going to be icy but I am not sure. I think people in cars will be ok. It's just for a walker of that distance it seems abit much. Although I'm not sure if 45mph winds are that bad? I remember being at the beach and 20mph winds were abit irritating but that's near the sea! She's had six and a half days since starting. I kind of hoped we wouldn't need to waste anymore days off unless she's genuinely ill. But perhaps I will have to.

A 4 year old? Keep her off and stay in!

Elbeagle · 10/02/2020 21:04

Instead of worrying tonight, just wait and see what it’s like tomorrow. If it’s not too bad, then walk. If it’s horrific, stay at home.

Craiglang · 10/02/2020 21:05

He was 20 minutes late when it's only a mile away? Hmm Leave earlier, be prepared. It's only wind.

I live in the NE of Scotland. 45mph gusts are nothing for us. It's hardly blizzard conditions.

Mangoxmangox · 10/02/2020 21:05

@Tinty Lincolnshire. It started at 1.45ish this afternoon and soon started settling huge flakes! Now it's windy and paths are half snow covered. I am thinking it's going to be icy and bad winds first thing. I am guessing the ice bit though.

@craigland

It was alot of parents. Including my friend who is also never late. We are never late. We are always 10 minutes early on foot or in the car. He left at 2.50 for a 3.20 pick up! It was absolutely grid locked! Loads of kids were in the hall!

Elbeagle · 10/02/2020 21:10

It was similar here this afternoon. We’re also about a mile away, I thought about driving but decided walking would probably be quicker.
Hadn’t even thought about the morning to be honest, will cross that bridge when I come to it.

MintyMabel · 10/02/2020 21:11

45mph gusts are nothing for us.

They are nothing for the vast majority of the country.

Mangoxmangox · 10/02/2020 21:13

We are talking about 4 and 2 year olds out in it. Not adults!

@Elbeagle I hope it's not too bad. Good luck!

Keep her off? Really? Dinnae be daft, wrap up and give yourselves plenty of time, it'll be fine.

ChanklyBore · 10/02/2020 21:14

Without being rude, it’s the school run. Sometimes it’s rainy and annoying and it is always repetitive and often bloody boring. It always seems to rain at 8.30am and 3pm just to spite you, and we have a school that has never closed. (I’ve had children there for over a decade and not one weather day has been taken, storm, rain, snow.) You just do it, because it is an essential, and with a 4yo and a toddler you have many more years of it to come. Believe me, I don’t like it, I’ve been soaked more than once today and nothing umbrella like will stand against the wind, but you put your waterproofs on and your good boots, and use whatever combination of carrier/walk/pushchair/sledge gets you there, with whatever bribery of puddle splashing, special treat when you get home, etc works on the day. Sympathies because it’s crap but there will be storms, wind, snow, rain, hail and god knows what in the years to come and school isnt optional.

Mangoxmangox · 10/02/2020 21:17

Hmmm. Google says 50mph winds are dangerous and hard to walk in. she's only 4 so itl be tougher for her too. We shall see what the morning brings! Trees are at risk of falling too. We have to walk through a risky area in that respect.

OP posts:
Mangoxmangox · 10/02/2020 21:20

@chanklybore

I hear you lol! I don't actually mind the school run. I do four miles a day in total. It's just been abit extreme this last few days. Damage to buildings, trees coming down etc. I just was genuinely concerned with her being safe and able to walk in such strong wind. Hopefully it won't be to bad x

Waxonwaxoff0 · 10/02/2020 21:24

@Tinty we've had snow in the East Midlands. It will be gone by the morning though, it was a heavy shower but only lasted about 90 minutes.

I wouldn't keep my child off school because of wind personally.

Lifeoverhaul · 10/02/2020 21:25

Wow. Just wow.
