Worried about tomorrow's school run

This morning my partner took my DD to school. He worked from home today due to the crappy weather. Then he collected her this afternoon. The wind has been terrible but it started heavily snowing this afternoon. He was 20 minutes late to collect her along with many other parents. The traffic was really bad this afternoon and the school received many calls due to this. They sent out an email to say in exceptionally bad weather only then they will close

Tomorrow it's giving 45-50mph winds with showers again. I'm abit worried about tomorrow morning. I don't think the school will shut. But we will be walking. It's an ok walk usually and we enjoy it. But I'm so worried the paths will be slippery and the wind will be too strong. We have to walk through a park with a river and loads of trees etc. I'll also have a toddler with me.

It's impossible to get a taxi at that time. I just get this feeling it's not going to be safe but the school can't obviously focus on everyone's individual situation. It's extremely rare for it to be this bad. What should I do? My DD is 4. Thanks!

If you want to have the day off then do. But don't look for a lame excuse like a bit of wind and rain

Kittensinmysupper · 10/02/2020 21:26

Can DH get the train of public transport and you have the car to take her instead .. ?

SurfingApple · 10/02/2020 21:27

6.5 days is quite a lot of time off in less than a term and a half. I am sure it couldn’t be helped but I think it’s fair to try and get her in tomorrow if you can. Would nobody be able to give her a lift as you are so local?

My littles have walked just fine in it today, and so has everyone else at the primary school (3-11years) plus all the younger siblings! I’m not that far from you. We have a 60% chance of snow overnight according to my weather app.

It feels like -8 outside apparently and it is sleeting sideways.

On that note, I’ve got to go out now, on foot, to the village to buy milk before the shop closes because I have been disorganised.

cousinboneless · 10/02/2020 21:28

Keep her off if you're worried. I walk two miles back from the morning school run and two miles there again to do pick up 5 days a week. In all weathers. DD is always taken and brought home in a car. I get on with it but don't put DD through it.

billsmothers · 10/02/2020 21:31

Book a taxi tonight if you think the school will be open, it won't be a problem if you book it soon.

TreeClimbingCat · 10/02/2020 21:32

She's 4 so not legally required to be in school anyway. I would keep her off. I have walked my children in heavy snow and the staff have said they would have kept their children at home in the same circumstances.

lovelove9 · 10/02/2020 21:33

Just have a lazy, cozy day at home!

DecemberSnow · 10/02/2020 21:35

She's 4.... Some people need to get a grip

She doesn't have to be legally there till she's 5 !!

Keep her off OP.... Have a snuggly day under a blanket with a film :)

CouldBeOuting · 10/02/2020 21:40

A mile? My DCs always walked the mile to school from reception (so aged 4). In fact my DDs first day at school was on a snowy day (January intake).

Kittensinmysupper · 10/02/2020 21:43

Actually that's a good point.. she is only 4 doesn't legally need to be in school yet !

So in that basis . Keep life simple and stay home.

CallmeAngelina · 10/02/2020 21:43

Surely walking is far preferable to having to drive in it?

TheRosesAreInBloom · 10/02/2020 21:47

Keep her off OP, don’t worry about it!

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/02/2020 21:50

At 4 she isn’t csa why would you take her? It’s obvious to me that you wouldn’t.

1forsorrow · 10/02/2020 21:51

I went shopping today, sudden gust of wind and I nearly fell, really struggled to stay up. High winds are dangerous, flying debris, falls etc. Have a duvet day.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 10/02/2020 21:53

It’s not that big of a deal at 4yrs old to keep her off - however bear in mind we haven’t even had proper snow yet and we could have intermittent bad weather until March/April (a few years back it was heavily snowing as we drove to wales In the Easter holidays at the end of March!) so it could be pointless.

Maryann1975 · 10/02/2020 22:00

I agree with @ChanklyBore . Invest in a good waterproof coat, trousers and wellies/footwear for you and each child and you just have to get on with it. I’ve also stopped watching the weather forecast As I found if i was expecting the weather to be crap, I would worry about the school run and it would stop me sleeping. Now, I take the weather as it is in the morning. The forecast is often wrong so not worth my worry.

SinkGirl · 10/02/2020 22:00

Depends how bad the wind and how safe the route is surely?

A man quite local to me died yesterday, a tree came down on his car. I wouldn’t have walked my twins out in it yesterday, that’s for sure.

Shamazing · 10/02/2020 22:02

She's 4.... Some people need to get a grip

Absolutely. You really do.

Todayissunny · 10/02/2020 22:03

The snow doesnt worry me. The kids love it anyway.
But wind can be dangerous. For what it's worth some of the schools where I live were closed today because of the wind. Kids all walk to school here.
I can hear tiles lifting up on our roof at the moment and I'm worrying the windows are going to blow in.. they are bending and creaking.

Todayissunny · 10/02/2020 22:05

... 2 years ago a tree fell down on DHs car in a storm when he was driving it. He was lucky to walk away without a scratch.

SinkGirl · 10/02/2020 22:07

That’s so scary today - he was very lucky to survive. This man was driving on an A road at the time, it’s really awful - just a few seconds ahead or behind and he would have been fine. Absolutely tragic.

Really strong winds scare me a lot, I vaguely remember the awful storms in the late 80s, think I’ve been scared ever since!

64sNewName · 10/02/2020 22:11

At one of our local primaries a child was seriously injured when wind blew a tree branch down at break during a big storm some time ago. Everyone had been saying they weren’t really happy with the children being out in such high winds and then - bang 🙁

It’s rare, of course, and I’m not saying that’s likely to happen on your school run. But it’s not a wild fear either. And she’s only four so if you’re concerned I don’t think you should worry about keeping her home.

Todayissunny · 10/02/2020 22:11

My dh was very very lucky. The car was completely written off.
That poor man makes me realise how lucky. One second would make a difference.

Tefiti2 · 10/02/2020 22:12

@Mangoxmangox could you pre book a taxi? Even if it was for slightly after the rush hour, she won’t be that late and will at least be at school!
