My job makes me feel anxious, exhausted and burnt out. Anyone else?

I work in higher education. My job is fairly well paid, fairly flexible and on good days I can tell myself I'm doing good (we train people to do an important role in society, won't say any more than that because it's outing).

I'm good at my job (I think) and I've worked my way up quickly to a senior role. I like most of my colleagues, but I am so exhausted and work emails make me anxious.

I've taken a sick day today because I was awake half the night feeling stressed about work and this morning I couldn't function and couldn't get out of bed. I'm actually still working though, and I've just checked my emails because I feel guilty and now I feel anxious all over again because of what's there.

I don't know what to do. I know I should probably look for something else but a) I feel I'd be letting people down and b) the thought of having to start over somewhere new seems overwhelming.

I don't think I'm depressed, I'm just so done with it all and find now enjoyment from work anymore.

I'm not even sure what I want from this thread! Anyone else feel like me?

I worked with some amazing colleagues and fantastic students however, often the results of the NSS would reflect the ineffective systems that were introduced and academic staff had no control over. This brought NSS results down and academic staff blamed for this*

This this this, a million times this.

Plus, the vast, all-encompassing problem of student mental health, which we are not equipped to deal with and do not have adequate support for. I can't go into details, obviously, but that is a huge issue, every single day.

I am writing job applications today.

Another public sector worker here. I've done this role for 13 years working with clients who are really vulnerable.

I'm tired, anxious and generally burnt out. I used to love it but now I find I'm just getting really resentful.

I need to find something else but with children my role is quite flexible and I have some autonomy. My manager is okay too so feel that jumping ship while DC are young is not the right move. But I'm so burnt out with the work 😞

The student mental health issue is a bad one. I once had an academic asking me to guarantee the student who wanted to transfer to our Dept was not going to kill himself.

I just looked at him and said, I think you and I both know that NOBODY, not his doctor, not his parents, that he is not doing something like that, especially when the guy has no previous history of MH!

Honestly, he is a great academic in any aspects but people’s behaviour is not an exact science.

@Stabbitha1 - but different organisations and roles within organisations have widely different stress levels (also depends on person’s attitude to job). My job now is much lower stress for me. But my boss - who cares a lot and has more responsibility - seems more stressed. I guess maybe different things suit different people - eg driving is one person’s job another’s nightmare.
