Samsung phone. 'Call forwarded'. Is this automatic or is he pressing that button?

My son went on a trip abroad this morning with school. 8 hours have gone by now without a text.

He said he would let me know when he arrived.

I know he's arrived by flight tracker.

But I'd sleep alot better if I just got a text back (I've only text twice, one whilst he was in departures and one about an hour ago to check he arrived safely, I'm not being a dick)

I decided to call but just got the call forwarded message.

Is that automatic or is he forwarding it himself.

Please don't call me a helicopter mum etc... Its his first time on a plane. First time out of the country. I'd just like to have confirmation he arrived OK.

Is it possible that he doesn't have roaming?

PonyoFishyInTheSea · 09/02/2020 20:04

I checked his provider and it says he won't be charged any different to normal.

But I've not been abroad in years. Does he have to do something specific to his phone so he can receive calls?

Maybe it has run out of battery?

mrbob · 09/02/2020 20:07

He is on a school trip. They will tell you if anything happens. He is probably having heaps of fun and has completely forgotten or run out of battery. Try not to worry!

Llareggub · 09/02/2020 20:08

If anything had happened you would know by now. The school would have been in touch. Have you checked the school’s twitter or Instagram? That’s how we are kept up to date when the children are abroad with school.

MrsJoshNavidi · 09/02/2020 20:08

No, but the network operator does.

OakElmAsh · 09/02/2020 20:10

If it went to voicemail/messaging service then he either is out of battery, forgot to take off airplane mode, is out of service somewhere (ie on an underground train or something) or has turned his phone off... that would happen automatically, he wouldn't have pressed anything
How old is he?

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 09/02/2020 20:15

Does the phone ring normally and it ‘suddenly’ goes to voicemail mid-ring or does it go straight to voicemail or gets diverted after a set amount of rings? The former is him diverting the calls himself, the latter would most likely be a setting on the phone or by the network provider.

Do you both have WhatsApp? If he hasn’t turned the setting off on his phone you can see when he was last online on there and that might give you some more clues.

Like a PP said, the school would have contacted you by now if something had happened. But on the other hand, presuming you have paid for this phone and said you would like a text or quick call telling you that he’s okay and got there safely and you find out he purposely ignored that, I would be having a talk when he got back about his need for his own phone when he isn’t even able to use it properly.

lollybee1 · 09/02/2020 20:17

Maybe he has been playing games all flight and now has no battery.

PonyoFishyInTheSea · 09/02/2020 20:19

He has powerbanks.

First time I went call forwarded.

2nd time it went to voicemail.

It's not dead because its ringing.

You’d know if he hadn’t arrived ok, the school would have let you know.

MintySpud · 09/02/2020 20:22

He'll be fine. Leave him be.

PonyoFishyInTheSea · 09/02/2020 20:27

I know he arrived but it's common courtesy to call or text your mother when you've just flown a few thousand miles away.

I honestly can't believe any mother would not be bothered not hearing from their child when they are in another country for the first time.

It doenst take 30 seconds to send 'am OK mum'

Especially when he promised me he would.

I'm not going to be made out to be ruining his fun when he literally has a week to do whatever he wants and I'm asking for 30 seconds.

We had to contact our network operator to activate roaming to enable using the phone overseas. That was TalkTalk. Maybe check the providers rules on roaming. The process was free, I don't know why it couldn't be automatic, but it wasn't. Good luck, must be frustrating.

MulticolourMophead · 09/02/2020 20:34

My DS went on a school trip last year to New York.

He didn't have time to himself, they had such a packed programme he came home tired as hell.

It was his first time abroad, I saw his plane landing safely on the flight tracker, and then I just followed the school facebook page. I didn't expect him to call, because it's a school trip, they'll let you know if there's an issue.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 09/02/2020 20:37

Doesn’t take more than seconds to send someone a quick text letting them know you’re okay.

Llareggub · 09/02/2020 20:41

I knew my son was OK because I gave him my Monzo card to use and I got a text notification each time he used it.

Don’t you have to pay to receive calls when abroad? I’ve always put mine on flight mode and just used WiFi and WhatsApp for calls when travelling. Could he have done this?

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 09/02/2020 20:42

How old is he?

PonyoFishyInTheSea · 09/02/2020 20:47

I think it's something to do with his phone settings.

Hopefully he will figure it out or a friend will help him.

He's 34.

Hes the teacher.

I'm kidding. He's 14. I'm sure he will get in touch soon.

😂😂😂

I see you get your jokes off the Viz comments page on Facebook too, OP.

vhs95 · 09/02/2020 20:57

People on here are trying to put your mind at rest so you feel better - yes, the school would let you know; yes, he should have texted you. Nobody thinks you're pestering him but kids forget when they're having fun. Be kind to him and yourself.

PonyoFishyInTheSea · 09/02/2020 21:01

I have terrible, terrible anxiety so I am admittedly alot more worried than I should be, especially knowing he is safe, it took alot for me to go along with this (I refuse to let my issues stop him doing things) but I did ask for him to text me when he gets a moment.

My son went away for 3 weeks last year to the world scout jamboree. 2 weeks in America and a week in Canada.
I got a message from him 5 days in asking for more money and then couldn’t contact him and was worried sick as he had gone with £650! In the end I messaged one of his leaders apologising and explaining the situation. She spoke to him and made him message me.
I got the odd picture of him on Facebook- it’s handy when your child is the tallest person in the group apart from when they always hide from the camera!
I feel your pain op.
