Help with church wedding music please

Getting married in June and I am struggling to find something to walk in to, we have an organist and a choir.

Also what do you think to Zadok the priest for when we are signing? I like rousing songs! :)

Thanks for any input

Oo I love Zadock the priest. Or I was glad by Parry.
Te Deum prelude by Charpentier
Horn pipe from
Water music by Handel
Hornpupe Humouresque by Noel Rawsthorne

Katisha · 09/02/2020 13:57

Ask the music director what the choir have in their repertoire and what they find works well at weddings. Not all church choirs have the time to learn new stuff for weddings.

CrotchetyQuaver · 09/02/2020 14:04

I would suggest you chat to the organist and see what what they recommend/suggest. It's as much about what will work on the organ and what the choir are capable of singing as anything else. No point in asking for Vidors Toccata if either the organ or organist aren't up to it and it sounds terrible... they should know all the ones that work best in the church for walking up/down the aisle to.

Assuming you don't want the standard 'here come's the bride', I came into the overture from Handal's firework music (the slow section!). I'd consider coming in to Zadok the Priest actually - not sure I'd have it for signing of the register; I'd go for something a little more laid back, but there's no rule about it.

There's also a couple of trumpet voluntaries:
Trumpet Voluntary by Jeremiah Clark
Trumpet Tune by Purcell (we went out to this).

Widor's Toccata and Fugue if your organist is good (!), possibly more suitable for leaving?

Stravapalava · 09/02/2020 15:50

I got married in church and I walked in to Gabriel's Oboe by Ennio Morricone.

For signing the register, we had Delibes' Flower Duet and Nessun Dorma (DH insisted on it, as he's a football fan!)

We walked out to Poppiholla by Chicane.

Not

Stravapalava · 09/02/2020 15:50

pressed post too soon!

Not very rousing though, I admit!

Kittensinmysupper · 09/02/2020 15:54

I absolutely love Paschabel Cannon in D major.. for the registry ..

Trumpet voluntary for your entrance

(Says I who walked in to 'Get it on' by TREX ) but it wasn't Church...

mumonthehill · 09/02/2020 15:57

Arrival of the Queen of Sheba!

DramaAlpaca · 09/02/2020 16:00

I walked in to Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 09/02/2020 16:01

If you're wanting the organist/choir to provide the music, then I'd probably chat to them first. What can they do well, do you need to pick from their repertoire?

Elderflower14 · 09/02/2020 16:04

I came in to Queen of Sheba.
Wedding Day at Troldhaugan during register signing.
Came out to Vidor Tocatta and Fugue.

Greenteandchives · 09/02/2020 16:04

I had St Anthony Chorale to go in, and the traditional Mendelssohn Wedding March to come out to, as I knew I would really feel married when the opening bars of that blasted out.

Katisha · 09/02/2020 16:07

PS zadok has a very long instrumental intro so if you had it for entry, you'd be in before the choir started!

OrchidJewel · 09/02/2020 16:07

All things bright and beautiful, John Rutter version. Most of Rutter's are lovely. May not suit you

Commonwasher · 09/02/2020 16:18

Agree that Zadok is better to go in or out to — it’s written as a processional, and feels like one too.

Mendlesson’s midsummer nights dream is good to go out to.

If you have soloists you have more options for music during the register. Otherwise I would talk to the organist and see what they’ve done that works. You can pretty much have whatever you want — so long as they are comfortable playing and singing it! I would not pick anything too close to your heart as I find guests seem to talk during the signing of the register even if there is some music performed. If you ask your little neice to sing something you heard on your first date you may feel more offended than if they talk over a professional musician playing something you quite like.... IYSWIM.

Holymotherforkingshirtballs · 09/02/2020 16:19

I walked in to Trumpet Voluntary and out to The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba. During the signing of the register we had Pachrlbel Canon in D and Sheep May Safely Graze

painintheholeSIL · 09/02/2020 16:49

I walked in to a thousand years,
Run instrumental for lighting candles
Clouds veil
Eagles wings
Going to the chapel
Alleluia
Songbird
And we had you've got the love for walking out.

MissisBee · 09/02/2020 16:57

We walked in to Bach air in D (air on a G string but on the organ). Out to the Prince of Denmark's march.
The choir sang a couple of John Rutter pieces while we signed the register - Gaelic blessing and something else I can't remember.
I had wanted Pachelbel but, as it's a small church, the organist pointed out I'd be up the aisle before it got properly started.
I think you'd need a pretty big church and choir for Zadok to work.

Double3xposure · 09/02/2020 17:12

David N Johnstone Trumpet tune in D

Rousing and not as well known. To come out to, not for signing the register.

Not as technically difficult as some, so within the range of most church organists.

Double3xposure · 09/02/2020 18:39

I came out to this , but played by a trumpet and organ .

Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Prelude on the Te Deum.

Oh here it is with a trumpet

@bathorshower - we obviously have very similar taste as we had Purcell’s trumpet tune for our processional and Handel’s firework music for our recessional Smile

Cantdecidewhich · 10/02/2020 09:54

Thank you all so much for all your suggestions I have listened to them all!

I have already spoken to the choir and they said they will learn anything we want if it's not in their repertoire so thanks to @Stravapalava I think we are going to see if they can sing Nessun Dorma as we are also huge footie fans and would never have considered it (gives me goose bumps)

For walking out it's a toss up between Vidor's Toccato (if the organist can play it) and the good old Wedding march (Dp's choice not mine!).
So thanks again for all your help we really appreciate it.

Still can't find anything for walking in so any other ideas very welcome please.

Zadok the Priest is notoriously to sing well, so I would not be sure about a choir learning it specifically for a wedding, rather than having it in their Repertoire already.
How about „BLessed be the God and Father“ for the
I would walk in to the Arrival of the Queen of Sheba.
Pachabel’s Canon is a bit boring but well known.

GinTonic123 · 10/02/2020 10:14

....that should read “for the interlude”

TimeIhadaNameChange · 10/02/2020 11:18

I'll never get married in a church but if I did I would have Lefébure-Wely's Sortie in E flat. Absolutely brilliant piece, not many people know it but the organist at church used to play it occassionally, and would get me to page turn to give me an excuse to stay and listen to the whole thing.
