Child with high temp - please help

Ds (6) has had a high temp all day.
He's been to the doctor at 4pm and has throat, nose and sinus infection. He's started antibiotics.
He last had Calpol at 8pm (3 hours ago) and his temp is 40 again already. He's not supposed to have ibuprofen as he has asthma.
The temp just seems so high, but is it ok/normal.
He's 6 but never had a temp this high in his life.

Is he responsive? Is his breathing and colour okay?

DragonMamma · 08/02/2020 23:27

Have you given Ibuprofen too? Do you think there’s any reason for the temp?

I would call 111 for advice, especially if it’s out of character for your DC

Sorry, I’ve just seen that he’s on antibiotics! (Wine!)

I would give some nurofen and assess in a few hours. Unfortunately, antibiotics don’t work instantly so it may be a day or two before there’s an improvement

@Clymene He woke about 10 mins ago and asked for water, is going back to sleep now, just coughing a bit with his throat.

he isnt dressed too much , is he?

NeonSalamanda · 08/02/2020 23:35

Do not give ibruprofen if he has asthma.

Do call 111 if you are concerned.

NeonSalamanda · 08/02/2020 23:35

Also, no nurofen with asthma.

Stompythedinosaur · 08/02/2020 23:38

Don't give Nurofen if he has asthma, it is ibuprofen.

Put damp flannels on him to reduce his temp.

I think with a temp of 40 I would ring 111 for advice. I say that as a nurse who doesn't seek medical help quickly.

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 08/02/2020 23:38

@bluebell34567 only wearing very thin pjs. Says he's cold with anything less on him.

A high temp is not necessarily a concern... it's if it climbs quickly. It seems from what you've written that your son has had a steady temp not one that is climbing quickly. This is reassuring and likely means the body needs to heat to a higher temp to fight whatever bug he's caught.

If it was my child I would do the following (HOWEVER I can be fairly relaxed compared to many parents to you may not be comfortable with it and so don't be afraid to seek medical input via 111)

  • make sure central heating off
  • have him in cool but nice clothes (t-shirt and loose long legged trousers would be best)
  • Check his temp and breathing every 20-30 mins while you're awake.
  • set alarm for during night to wake every 3 hours or more to check
JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/02/2020 23:39

Make sure you turn the heating down and call 111 Thanks

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 08/02/2020 23:40

Im not in the UK so can't ring 111.

There's only the out of hours doctor that he has already been to this afternoon.

Oh and make sure he's drinking regularly and check for signs of dehydration

He needs a duvet/blanket nearby for covering up when he has chills

Scootingthebreeze · 08/02/2020 23:41

Oops don't know why my phone inserted 'nice' clothes. You get the idea though!

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 08/02/2020 23:42

Thanks @Scootingthebreeze, it's reassuring to read your post about steady temps

OP posts:
Scootingthebreeze · 08/02/2020 23:45

Gimme 5 and I'll try and link you to some stuff you can read to reassure you officially

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 08/02/2020 23:46

Here is a link to NHS Scotland about fevers in kids and what signs to watch out for (seek immediate medical advice if he deteriorates in any way such as vomiting with high temp or hard to wake)

Scootingthebreeze · 08/02/2020 23:53

This link is great for explaining about a fevers behaviour and why it doesn't always reduce after meds

Scootingthebreeze · 08/02/2020 23:58

I've attached this link which explains fully but as the suppositories are paracetamol you must have 4 hour ago between these and the Calpol

Scootingthebreeze · 08/02/2020 23:59

Gap not ago

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 08/02/2020 23:59

Thanks again @scooting

Going to give him the suppositary now and hope then he'll be ok for the night

OP posts:
Newyearsameoldme2020 · 09/02/2020 00:20

Gave him the suppositaries, tried to do it while he was asleep but ended up waking him. Plenty of upset from him. He told me he doesn't want to be in the jungle any more, he wants to be home. We are home..
He's going back to sleep now.
