Child with high temp - please help

Ds (6) has had a high temp all day.
He's been to the doctor at 4pm and has throat, nose and sinus infection. He's started antibiotics.
He last had Calpol at 8pm (3 hours ago) and his temp is 40 again already. He's not supposed to have ibuprofen as he has asthma.
The temp just seems so high, but is it ok/normal.
He's 6 but never had a temp this high in his life.

Have you stripped him right off and cooled down the air in the room as much as possible to try and reduce the temperature that way? He can be in his pants with a light sheet for comfort if awake, if asleep you could leave it off altogether until the fever reduces.

Paracetamol in any form can only be given 4 times in 24 hours a minimum of 4 hours apart, but try to stretch to 6 hourly if you can to give you coverage.

Some children with asthma that do not have a known sensitivity to aspirin or NSAIDS can have ibuprofen, but the possibility of a reaction remains if he has never had ibuprofen previously to know the response adc.bmj.com/content/89/9/885.

If the fever does not reduce even for a short time and he seems more lethargic (than is normal for the time of day), seems confused when temperature is reduced somewhat (they can be a bit confused if delirious with high fever), has reduced urine output then get him checked again. If you become so worried that you need to get him checked and go to hospital they could try a dose of ibuprofen whilst you are there under observation to see if he reacts if you have never tried him with it.

Sorry I dozed off before I saw your replies. How is he this morning? Did you both get much sleep?

thaegumathteth · 09/02/2020 11:11

Hope he's better now

Thanks, he slept for 6 hours after that, and is much the same today. Calpol isn't bringing down the temperature really, it's still 40 an hour after taking it. Think I just have to hope the antibiotic starts helping soon.

What did 111 say?

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 09/02/2020 15:14

@JiltedJohnsJulie not in the UK so don't have 111 here.
He was with out of hours doc yesterday and he has ear, nose, throat and sinus infection and started a load of meds.

Might be worth trying a dose of ibuprofen as many asthmatic don't react to it.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/02/2020 15:18

Unless he has had it before and reacted.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 09/02/2020 15:33

I have asthma and don't react to ibruprofen. I think it's only alternating between paracetamol and ibruprfen that got me through the 'flu a few wintered ago.

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 09/02/2020 17:57

He ended up back with the doctor this afternoon as he was really distressed. The infections have spread rapidly since yesterday so he's been given a stronger dose of antibiotic and tamiflu to go with the other meds he got yesterday

Oh bless him, he must feel rotten and you must be worn out and worried. Sounds like he should be on the up soon though when his meds take effect Flowers

123bananas · 12/02/2020 13:51

How is he now OP?

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 12/02/2020 16:16

Thanks for checking in @123bananas

He is much better. It took 48 hours before we were able to get his temperature under 40, but today it is almost back to normal. He is starting to eat again aswell. Still looks completely run down and tired and blood shot eyes so will let him rest for the rest of the week.

Unfortunately I have picked up the throat infection from him and am in my gp waiting room at the minute Sad

I'm glad he's improved. Hopefully you can both rest, make sure you let yourself recharge
