Or not partually a tenth but A certain amount ?

It's bad enough that we have to pay tax on everything !

drivingtofrance · 08/02/2020 17:36

I don't give a set amount of my money to anyone other than HMRC.

Its up to me if I want to give it to a charity (many of which I think shouldn't NEED to exist, they are only there due to failings within our welfare system).

Don't believe in any god.

Topseyt · 08/02/2020 17:36

Nope. Not a churchgoer. I'll put a couple of quid in the collection plate if I have gone to a church service for a particular reason, such as a funeral or wedding. That's it.

I'll give to charities of my choice on an ad hoc basis because I can't afford regular donations.

Arnoldthecat · 08/02/2020 17:49

No,not really. I utterly resent giving 20% and more to HMRC so im not about to give more to anyone else.

Lardlizard · 08/02/2020 17:51

Well to your local church

Bezalelle · 08/02/2020 17:51

I'm Jewish and try to give at least a tenth of my money away to good causes.

MimiLaRue · 08/02/2020 17:51

Yes. I give to charity and some to the church every month. Its part of my gratitude practice

AgeLikeWine · 08/02/2020 17:52

God doesn’t exist, so she / it gets nowt from me.

I do regularly donate to a small number of local charities, but I don’t give a specific percentage of my income.

TwigTheWonderKid · 08/02/2020 17:52

I'm not religious but do strongly feel I have a moral duty to help and support those members of our community who are less fortunate than me. Ideally, we'd have a much fairer tax system which would properly redistribute wealth and finance all the things which a civilised society should provide for those in need but as we don't, I do support charities. However, I'd prefer to pay more tax as I strongly believe the provision of essential things should not be left to chance and some people's generosity.

OhLook · 08/02/2020 17:53

No, of course I don't. What a bizarre thought in 2020.

I give to charity, but that's my own decision on amount.

NeverTwerkNaked · 08/02/2020 18:00

Not to church. But it's my privilege to give a decent amount each month to charities that I care about - environmental ones mainly.

icannotremember · 08/02/2020 18:03

No. I'd happily pay more tax though.

APatchyTomCat · 08/02/2020 18:05

Not to 'god' and definitely not the church.

The handful of churchgoers I know are among the least charitable people you could meet. But I guess they give to their church, so that's okay.

Snaga · 08/02/2020 18:07

I do believe it's my duty as a working person bringing in a wage that my wages are taxed to benefit my family and the wider community/country.

I don't feel I have a duty beyond that. However I do give to some charities regularly because I strongly believe in what they're doing and wish to help them achieve those things. Not obligation for fear of eternal damnation, but because I want to.

HitItAsHardAsYouCan · 08/02/2020 18:11

Nope.

Looneytune253 · 08/02/2020 18:12

I'm a Christian and I don't donate to the church (only in time). On the whole it's a greedy organisation. We raised money for a charity and we had to donate it separately as if it was donated through the church they take a massive chunk of the amount.

Lipperfromchipper · 08/02/2020 18:14

Nope...

BennytheBall · 08/02/2020 18:16

No.

I am in a 'give as you earn' scheme, so a donation to a nominated charity comes out of my salary every month, but I certainly don't think it's my duty.

TheGinGenie · 08/02/2020 18:19

No, I give money to charity but not a tenth because I can't afford it. I work for a charity though so it's a weird cycle where I actually get all my money from charity...

CatFaceCats · 08/02/2020 18:22

Well I don’t believe in god or religion so I absolutely would not give to a church ever.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 08/02/2020 18:24

Charity yes.
The church or any religious group - no.

MindyStClaire · 08/02/2020 18:24

I'm an atheist so I don't give to a church or give for religious reasons. However we are comfortable if not loaded so I do think giving to charity is the Right Thing To Do (and feel the same about tax), so we do give to charity. Nothing like 10 percent though.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/02/2020 18:25

We tithe, but not 10%. If we didn’t our church could not operate (and wouldn’t be able to offer the outreach services we do).
The building needs insured, heated, maintained etc.
We need to buy equipment, food for our weekly elderly lunch etc.

icansmellburningleaves · 08/02/2020 18:25

Not at all. We give money to cancer research every month. We used to give to childline every month until I found out that they use the money to run sex offender programs so I pulled that. I have concerns about fat cats who run charities making a mint so try not to give money. So little of what you give actually goes to people in need. I would never give to a church or any religious organisation.

Babdoc · 08/02/2020 18:27

The church in Britain is one of the biggest providers of social care and does an enormous amount of charity work. Our ministers shoulder a huge emotional burden of hospital visiting, bereavement care and counselling their flock, along with fundraising. I rather resent the unnecessary rudeness of some PPs using terms like “sky fairy” for God, but I suppose stooping to childish insults says more about them than God.
I’m a Christian and regular churchgoer (church of Scotland) and am happy to support their work with my donations each week, which I gift aid to generate more cash from HMRC. I also support several charities with monthly direct debits and have another five that I support with bigger one off donations on a rotating basis. I give food each week to our local food bank.
I’m aware that is inadequate- Christ asked us to sell everything we have and give it to the poor - but at least it’s a start!
