I have monthly standing orders set up for charity donations but would never donate to a church. Always add some items to the foodbank at the supermarket.

PontiacBandit · 08/02/2020 16:56

No way.

vdbfamily · 08/02/2020 16:57

we aim to give approx a tenth but not strict about it as we give to needy causes via tax too and NI. Whilst a fair bit goes by DD to our church, they are very transparent about where it goes and they do have some great projects they support. Amongst others they support local homeless including housing those they can, debt counseling, send optical teams out to Kenya each year and planning to build a clinic, support an orphanage in Haiti, have a local mechanic who services/ MOT's cars for those struggling financially etc. We also regularly support 2 children being educated through African schools, one now graduated so started again with a young girl starting school, and we support several charities we have a personal interest in. Having said all that, I think giving financially is the easy but, the difficult but it's giving up TIME to help with these projects too and I think time is what is most needed. 10% is guidance only but I believe everything I have is actually God's and I have to decide what I keep if that makes sense.

eurochick · 08/02/2020 16:57

No, because I consider organised religions to be a load of bollocks. Most of them have vast resources that could be put to great use if they were so inclined. The land owned by the CofE and the art owned by the Catholic Church could pull whole communities out of poverty. But they choose not to put those resources to that kind of use.

I do give to charity but not religious ones and not 10% of my income.

vdbfamily · 08/02/2020 16:58

also our pastor is on a fairly modest salary.

ChocolateCranberries · 08/02/2020 16:58

Nope, occasionally give to charities in support when I have spare money but not regularly at all.

No.

DeeZastris · 08/02/2020 16:59

Nope.

NumbersStation · 08/02/2020 16:59

Not church.

Different animal charities although not quite that percentage. And if I get a bonus, or any extra, they get that too. I’m not rich or well off but it is important to me.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 08/02/2020 17:00

We tithe yes. We go to Church. We give a 10th of our income. It funds the building (utilities, repairs, re-decorating), pays our vicar's salary, covers maintenance on the vicarage etc. Our vicar certainly isn't living it up abroad on holiday every 5mins but she needs to earn a living. Our church accounts are available to view so it's possible to see exactly what our income is and where it goes.

Newmetoday · 08/02/2020 17:00

No way. The church is rich through lies. They can fuck off

Bunnybigears · 08/02/2020 17:00

No because I dont have any religion so it would seem a bit silly to give then money.

iklboo · 08/02/2020 17:01

When God does 1/10th of my job I'll donate. But since I don't believe in the usual concept of God that's not going to happen. We donate to charity, but not 10% (who decided on the tithe or 10% anyway?).

If anyone wishes to believe in a deity of their choice or donate to a religion I have no problem with that. It's just not what I do.

AlexaAmbidextra · 08/02/2020 17:01

How many pastors have private jets and mansions.

Not many in the UK I shouldn’t think.

GetawayfromthatWelshtart · 08/02/2020 17:02

Sod no. I give monthly to Battersea Dogs Home, that's it, I can't afford anything else.

I would never give money to a religious order. Pretty sure if they all sold off their vast properties and pretty shiny things they wouldn't have to take from the poor to pay for their own needs.

The reasoning of "God" needing "our money" reminds me of James.T.Kirk's line in Star Trek V: The final frontier....

StrumpersPlunkett · 08/02/2020 17:03

we try to do 10%
not to a church but to charity in general. Some months it is a bit more sometimes a bit less but we are in a v fortunate position that 10% doesn't put pressure on our lifestyle so perhaps it should be more?

Elbeagle · 08/02/2020 17:03

No, do you OP?
I usually put a couple of £ in the church collection when I’m at a wedding/funeral/school carol service etc as I think churches should be maintained as beautiful historic buildings, but as atheist I do not make regular donations to ‘God’, no.
I give to charities I want to support, at a level I can afford.

tiggertogger · 08/02/2020 17:07

Yes I give a tithe to the church and a tithe to 2 different charities close to my heart. My church really supports those in need and I feel it's my duty.

leckford · 08/02/2020 17:09

No, if you can afford it give to a charity you believe in. Don’t encourage religion it is evil

SentimentalKiller · 08/02/2020 17:10

No. I don't believe in God and most charities are w run like big business these days

LaurieFairyCake · 08/02/2020 17:18

The 'church' is all the charities I give to (children/donkeys/diabetes/dogs and cats), all the time I give to people and the church.

I'm pretty sure I give 10% at least of my being to the kingdom of God.

The kingdom of God is here on earth - religious or not most people work and pay for the good of others. Through taxes, through community work, through loving the people, the earth and the animals around them.

Babybel90 · 08/02/2020 17:23

No, I don’t earn anywhere near enough to be able to give 10% away. All my money goes on my family and providing the best life I can.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 08/02/2020 17:25

I bet they dont take half

Depends what the tax is like in the country you live in

LoonyLunaLoo · 08/02/2020 17:26

Hell no we pay more than enough in taxes.
