Nursery letting DS sleep

Motherofmonsters · 07/02/2020 16:20

DS 2.5 goes to nursery on a Friday.

At home he doesn't have a nap but sometimes will at nursery which is generally okay as it's a much busier day.

However they 'promote healthy sleep' which means they aren't allowed to wake children up from a nap.

My problem is DS will not go to bed at 6.30 if they let him sleep longer than an hour. He ends up staying up to 8.30/9. Today they've let him sleep 2.15 hours!

They sent me a message to say they've woken him up even though they're not meant to but surely as the parent I should be able to allow them to wake him.

Do other nurseries wake their children?

@WardrobeJumper

6.30 is too early for a 2.5 year old bedtime

No it’s not!
2 year olds should be getting 12-14 hours sleep a night.

TheSheepofWallSt · 07/02/2020 20:26

@AmelieTaylor

Actually it’s 12-14 hours in a 24 hour period...

Marmitepasta · 07/02/2020 20:27

It's interesting because sleep habits are very different depending what n the country. We're in France and they still have a nap at nursery school until they're 5 or 6!

Nice little dig, @AmelieTaylor.

The 12-14 hours figure is within a 24 hour period, and includes nap(s).

Natsku · 07/02/2020 20:30

Marmitepasta They nap here in Finland until 5 or 6 too and no nursery would agree to stopping a child from napping. DD stopped napping at 18 months and started again at 3 years old when she went to nursery.

You can ask them to wake your DS up but you might just have to adjust to a later bedtime on nursery days.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/02/2020 20:31

Could you wake him an hour earlier gonna Friday morning so he has an earlier nap at Nursery?

PatchworkElmer · 07/02/2020 20:34

Our nursery wake children when parents request it. Before dropping his nap entirely, if DS slept last 2 he was up until 9ish at night, which messed him up for the next day... I think healthy sleep is about more than 1 nap tbh. Letting him sleep late would mess him up for days.

Notso · 07/02/2020 20:37

2.5 is little to not have a nap especially as it means he's going to bed so early.

Immaback · 07/02/2020 20:38

I’m just shocked you put your 2.5 year old to bed at 6.30
That’s very very early

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/02/2020 20:39

I'm shocked at those who are shocked at a 6.30 bedtime.

Mine have always been asleep by 7pm even at 5 or 6 yo.

MamaSmith18 · 07/02/2020 20:44

Just out of interest for those of you who think 6.30 is too early for a 2.5 year old, what time do your children go to bed?

My nearly 4yr old is usually asleep by 7pm, waking around 6.30am. Even if he went to bed at 8, he'd still wake at the same time (or earlier)

letsjog · 07/02/2020 20:44

I don't see much wrong with it unless he's sleeping past 4pm.

My DC is a similar age to yours @Motherofmonsters and we have dropped naps about 3-4 months ago as something changed and he wouldn't go to sleep until anything between 10.30-12 at night if he did have one.
His usual bedtime is 7pm.

However he does nap at nursery sometimes for over 2hours but never past 3.30pm. And still goes down at 7pm as normal on those days - I find nursery life a lot more tiring for them than just general daily pottering around the house.

Can you reach a compromise?

EstebanTheMagnificent · 07/02/2020 20:45

People on MN do ‘shock’ easily.

Motherofmonsters · 07/02/2020 20:46

I didn't think bedtime at 6.30 was that out of the ordinary.

What time do your toddlers go to bed?

Whaaaaat?! What time are you all putting your children to bed? I would say 6.30 for a 2.5 year old is a perfectly sensible bedtime. My 4 year old is asleep by 7 every night.

Busydrinkingcoffee1 · 07/02/2020 20:49

Mine is also in bed by 6.30-7pm OP as are most of the toddlers I know that age! Seems normal to me! And I agree with you my DS is exactly the same, he's had a 2 hour nap today, very unusual for him as he's stopped naps now and he's currently still wide awake and refusing to sleep, so I feel your pain Confused

Hollywhiskey · 07/02/2020 20:51

Never mind the toddlers, can I join that nursery please? A nap that no one (especially my own toddler) can wake you up from sounds DELIGHTFUL.

Natsku · 07/02/2020 20:51

My 2 year old goes to bed at 8, been his bedtime since about 6 month old. I would not be able to get him to sleep at half 6.

UterusesBeforeDuderuses · 07/02/2020 20:53

Toddler bedtimes vary massively and depend on how long they sleep for and if they're early risers. Our nearly 2 year old has always been a late riser, he goes to bed usually around 8:30pm and sleeps until 8am most days, which works for us as my DH goes to work a bit later. As long as they're getting enough sleep it doesn't matter what time they go to bed

ArfArfBarf · 07/02/2020 20:57

We have this issue too. At the weekend he has no nap and sleeps 7-7. Monday-Friday he has a two hour nap at nursery, then mucks around until 10pm and for some reason also wakes up at 5 the next day. The main problem is his older brother and sister are also kept awake by his nonsense and they don’t get to have a catch up nap at school the next day.

MintTeaLady · 07/02/2020 20:58

My nursery follow whatever the parents want. In my son’s case, we have a 2 hour nap limit with waking him at 3pm latest (otherwise his 8pm bedtime goes out the window and it can be 11pm before he’s down).

MeMeMeYou · 07/02/2020 21:01

It’d annoy me. My son slept worse at night for a nap. At 2.5 if he had more than half an hour he’d wake the next day at 4.30!!! If he had half an hour he’d make it to 6am. For my own wellbeing as well as his that would’ve been pants

Thefaceofboe · 07/02/2020 21:10

It’s basic care to allow a child to sleep and a lot of nurseries go by this. In my nursery we do wake children up and a lot of them have a sleep limit such as an hour or 2 hours. It’s completely up to the parents how long THEIR child sleeps

rhowton · 07/02/2020 21:15

Both my kids (2.5 DD and 8mDD) are in bed for 6pm every night and wake at 6am! They both sleep 12-2 in the day. My eldest could probably stay up a bit later and sometimes does, but my 8m old would be dead on her feet if she didn't go to bed for 6. DH and I are home for 4:30!
