I bought a rice maker after catching dh washing it under the hot tap...

Pipandmum · 07/02/2020 13:39

No

dementedpixie · 07/02/2020 13:39

No. But i think it depends what cooking technique you use too. I use lots of water and drain off the excess after cooking

JaneR0chester · 07/02/2020 13:40

Always. I was taught to wash/rinse the rice at least 3 times with hot water, fresh water to cook with. In a rice cooker.

WisestIsShe · 07/02/2020 13:41

I soak it in cold water for 30 mins or so. I googled how to cook it after a few inconsistent tries and it's worked so far.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/02/2020 13:42

Yes, not because it's dirty, but to remove the starch so it doesn't stick together.

Caspianberg · 07/02/2020 13:43

Yes, it needs washing as rice contains arsenic.

Trahira · 07/02/2020 13:44

No

MiddleClassProblem · 07/02/2020 13:45

Yes because it gets rid of the starch that clumps it

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 07/02/2020 13:46

Was following a specific recipe which said to rinse it, which I did, and it did come out fluffier. So now I do if I remember - I wash the rice first then let it sit in water until I'm ready to cook it. But if I don't remember and I need to get it on, I don't fret.

FrenchBoule · 07/02/2020 13:46

I peel it, just like some people do with mushrooms 😂.

Seriously, I just rinse it.

Ronia · 07/02/2020 13:47

I didn't used to cooked it according to the absorption method. Then I heard about the arsenic in it. Now we soak it, then rinse and into lots of new water and drain when cooked.

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 07/02/2020 13:47

God no. I use the microwave stuff 😂

Topseyt · 07/02/2020 13:49

I put it in a large sieve and rinse it under the cold tap for a couple of minutes. It is to reduce its starchiness, so that it isn't too clumpy when cooked.

shinynewapple2020 · 07/02/2020 13:54

No - didn't realise you were supposed to.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 07/02/2020 13:56

Yep, rinse it under the cold tap for a minute.

MonnaLIza · 07/02/2020 13:56

Don't rinse it if you are making risotto.

frazzledasarock · 07/02/2020 13:56

Yes to wash off excess starch.

loserssaywhat · 07/02/2020 14:00

I rinse it under the cold tap before I cook it and then a pour fresh boiling water over it in a sieve when it's cooked.
No idea why, I think I saw a cookery programme where this was a tip for not having sticky rice.
Seems to work so I've always done it.

canyouseethem · 07/02/2020 14:00

rinse until the water is clear to remove the starch. boil for 10 mins (lid on) with the water level 1cm above the rice then turn off the heat and leave for 10 mins (lid on). Fluff with a fork and serve!

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 07/02/2020 14:03

I do rinse/soak for basmati or Japanese rice, to remove the starch. I wouldn't for risotto or rice pudding!

nonicknameseemsavailable · 07/02/2020 14:03

i had no idea you were supposed to

Nonnymum · 07/02/2020 14:04

Does rice really contain aresnic? Sometimes I rinse it and sometimes not. My husband likes rice that is quite starchy and sticky and I find if I rinse it, it doesn't cook that way.

HighlandYak · 07/02/2020 14:04

I soak then rinse till the water runs clear.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 07/02/2020 14:05

I rinse it with cold water in a sieve. I then use the sieve to cook it in after boiling for a bit.
