I have never asked why as it is judgy isn’t it so I’m asking you all, why do people do this.
Especially those that are obviously professionally done, all misty around the edges, there’s usually feathers and off the shoulder outfit with heavy makeup making them look somewhat dragqueen like.
Pictures of them self up the stairs, huge ones in the living room with lots of smaller ones. No other family members, just themselves.

Or those awful painted or hand drawn ones that are just awful, why does that look amazing to one person but makes another shudder?

I’m old, I’ve been in many many homes, lots and lots and it always surprises me as it’s a lot, loads and loads of people have these.
Curious that’s all.
Not saying they can’t do or have what they want in their own homes...blah blah blah, just curious.

But @DDIJ why not in that room specifically?

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 07/02/2020 18:12

I'm surprised by how many people don't have photos of themselves in their house, however, dh family only have a picture of ds on display (first and only grandchild so far)

This has also made me look at the photos in my house 😂

In my livingroom there 5 stand alone photo frames and 1 multi photo frame, these are:
4 photos of me and one other occupant - 2 with dh, 1 cousin, 1 ds
4 photos of ds and our dog
2 photos of ds alone
2 group photos of me, dh, db and dps
0 photos of inlaws as they don't like to have their photos taken dh included as mentioned above.
Only 3 of them are professional.

There is a photo of dh and I on the sideboard in the hall. This is a party photo booth picture that's been blown up.

I have 4 collages going up the stairs, 1 of ds, 1 of our dog, 1 of dh and I, 1 of all 4 of us.

The one of all 4 of us has 6 pictures in it the other 3 have 15 different photos.

There are no other displayed pictures in the house.

Also this one Grin

DDIJ Why is it weird? Children change so quickly, surely it’s lovely to have fun photos of events etc scattered around for them to look at? I LOVE looking at photos of myself as a baby/child!

We took a photo of DT’s every day for the first two years of their lifes. We have photo books with them in and our six favourite from each year are framed and on the landing walls. I wish we’d carried on with the photo each day - they are now 20.

Dyrne · 07/02/2020 18:19

DDIJ sorry to hear that - sounds like you have bigger issues than a lack of photos Sad

RedRed9 · 07/02/2020 18:22

@DDIJ I’m worried about you. Can you go out and do something nice this weekend? What’s the weather due to be like where you are?

DimplesMcGee · 07/02/2020 18:23

We’ve mainly got photos of DS all over the sitting room, a couple of our wedding photos, a photo of one of my parents who has died, and a very old photo of my gran and grandad from the 1940s. But we do have a massive portrait of DS as a baby, with me holding him, painted by an artist friend. There’s a very sad story behind it which I won’t bore you with, but suffice it to say, it has emotional significance. Sometimes I worry that people who don’t know the story will think it’s narcissistic! Oh well. No misty edged glamour shots though.

LolaSmiles · 07/02/2020 18:24

I like seeing family snaps up from holiday, days out etc, but struggle to get on board with the photoshoot photos, posed canvases etc.

The trend for engagement photos, bump photos, professional newborn photos lying with fluffy blankets and fairy lights, family photo shoots etc is something that has passed me by I'm afraid. I'd find lots of professional shoot photos up to be a sign of vanity.

fussychica · 07/02/2020 18:29

I have a couple of small photos of me in our bedroom, one with DS at his graduation and one of us all looking very tanned when we returned to the UK from living abroad. I have beautiful photos of my mum and dad both taken when they were young and one of my parents in law.
The only professionally taken photo I have on display is of DS at his Oxford matriculation (proud mum alert) but it's not placed in a particularly prominent position. It's a lovely photo but its for us, not something I need to force everyone who visits to look at.

My neighbour, on the other hand, has hundreds of photos of her and her family on display. Each to their own, though I admit I'm not a fan of these massive studio shots taking up a whole wall. Not so bad in the bedroom but in the sitting room it's a bit much.

KenzoBaby · 07/02/2020 18:31

I have 2 big photos of me at Meet & Greets with Britney Spears.
I also have a caricature of myself hanging above the toilet.

Ginger1982 · 07/02/2020 18:31

"We do not attend events or have fun and we have no fond memories to look back on."

How odd. I like having family photos up because they make me smile. I think it's incredibly odd to not have any photos in existence.

ScarlettBlaize · 07/02/2020 18:36

@Ijustwanttoretire I have one of me taken about 30 years ago because I was stunning - now I am old and fat and few people believe I could possibly have looked that good.

This reminds me of one of my friends' mums when I was at secondary school. We were about 12 and every time we went over there, she would always insist on showing us all photos of her as a young woman/her wedding photo and tell us how her "wedding dress was a size 8 and it was too big". Incredibly awkward, no idea what to say.

Also my MIL who likes to trap you in a corner and show you albums of photos of her when she was young and comment on how slim she was and how long her hair was. I mean... in a way... yes... relative to now. But not really. (She was always short and sturdy.) And even if she HAD had an amazing figure in her youth, what are you meant to say?

riotlady · 07/02/2020 18:36

I’ve never seen anyone put up just pics of themselves! I’m in a few dotted around our flat but I’m with other people

Hazybobs · 08/02/2020 07:39

I’m not sure I get the fuss with all this. Downstairs, we have various photos dotted around the living room, dining room and hall of our wedding, honeymoon, the kids and a few family pics. Most of them are in frames on the windowsills, mantle piece and sideboard but we have a few hanging on the walls too. I love to look back on happy moments.

In our bedroom, we have a digital photo frame which I took upstairs when I realised it was a continual loop of DH’s phone photos s there were various holiday and bedroom snaps that didn’t really need to be on display to our visitors.

In the bedroom, we also have a couple of pics of me from a professional photoshoot I had done when pregnant with DS2 knowing it would be my last pregnancy). One is a Demi Moore nude pose (tits covered and cradling the bump) and the other is me in a white lace robe on my back. In my hubby’s home office, he has a canvas painting of when I posed as a life model. If people think I’m a bit narcissistic, then so be it. I loved being pregnant and have always been proud of my body and will look back fondly on these photos when I’m older and saggier around the edges.

YouMaySayImADreamer · 08/02/2020 07:49

I love photos and have lots up in my house. Mostly of the dc but also of dh and I, family group shots with us ans dc or immediate families. For me a photo is a memory. They remind me of lovely events/holidays/days etc and make me happy.

Stuckupsnob · 08/02/2020 08:10

Professional studio photos of the happy family in fun frolicks, chasing each other, messing around with white background indicates to me that they have to prove themselves. I bet the husband is having secret affairs.

I have no photos on show in my flat, but in my large house I have normal family photos of dead relatives and extended family.

HeronLanyon · 08/02/2020 08:23

Not only do I have no photos of current/recent people (friends family or me) in any house I’ve ever lived in I’d actually find it really odd/intrusive to see a photo of myself (or family) all of the time. Can’t imagine it. I do have photos of places. I also have a couple of photos of my grandparents and earlier generations on notice board.

I have been in very few houses where personal/family photos are displayed/framed.

Also wasn’t brought up with this. Parents had art on walls never photos. I think this is where this aversion must have come from. Had never thought about it before.

VenusClapTrap · 08/02/2020 10:28

When my mother was very ill in hospital having cancer treatment, she had a photo of herself by her bedside. Just herself, looking good in a holiday snap. She said it was a reminder to herself of her non-cancer-self. Of what she ‘really’ looked like; not the hairless, skin and bone person that cancer had turned her into.

At the time I thought it was quite funny she just had a pic of herself and not of her family. As I’ve got older, I understand why she did it.

Knittedjimmychoos · 08/02/2020 10:45

I know of one that's huge, sepia. The subject seems naked from the shoulders and is looking up, lips parted with hands framing her face.

80s tight perm, fuzzy edges. It's ghastly. Subject looks much better now actually.
Having said that we have lots of family photos out.

Dyrne · 08/02/2020 13:03

VenusClapTrap I can really resonate with that.

Bit different, but I carried on taking silly selfies with my mum even when I was sitting next to her having her most brutal of chemo sessions. The utter ridiculousness of massively gurning and saying “Chemo selfie!” Brought a moment of lightness and giggles to an otherwise truly shit time. She treats that photo now as a reminder of how far she’s come.

Mummyeyes · 08/02/2020 13:35

Oh darlings please, do what you want in your homes but for heavens sake when you are old get some lovely photos taken of your wonderful mature faces and your lovely old bodies. Love every wrinkle, every ounce.

Poetryinaction · 08/02/2020 14:11

My sister has a big painting of herself on her living room wall. It's not a very flattering one. And it's next to one of a naked lady. I don't get it.
