Would you do this at work?

Just a poll really to see if I’m in the minority or not...

If you are relatively serious about your job, not senior but in a responsible role, and you have booked annual leave at work but, at that time, you end up sick , would you bother to ‘reclaim’ the sick days so that you can use the annual leave at a later date?

It would never even occur to me to do that. But then again I'm fortunate to not suffer from ill health so the worst I have to contend with is a cold.

Missushb · 07/02/2020 21:25

I never understand why people post on here for opinions then disregard and rebut any comments that don't agree with what they think!😂

My work has a policy that you can’t take annual leave of you are sick.

Annual leave is meant to be sued to rest and relax, not be sick.

However, we get warnings for sick leave, so few people switch form annual leave to sick leave.

I have because I had 2 separate weeks booked but was off long term sick. So I cancelled the holiday when I returned and my boss was fine. A day here and there no I wouldn't.

I am with the OP. Managers have to act in accordance with company policy and the law. But it does not stop them having unvoiced personal opinions.

Anybody who thinks managers are robots with no thoughts other than those which are employee-friendly-mn-sanctioned are likely to be mistaken.

In England at least it is a legal right as long as you follow the usual sick leave procedure - notifying the relevant person by a specified time or whatever.
It can be frustrating, you paid annual leave is there to allow you to relax and recuperate so you can fully focus on your work, if you have been ill enough to not be able to work then yes, you can be entitled to have it back.

BarbedBloom · 10/02/2020 02:17

Yes. I am a manager and insist my staff do this too

Doryhunky · 10/02/2020 02:36

Yes it is a legal right. I would only do it if I was can’t get out of bed sick.

Freeekedout · 10/02/2020 02:52

Haven't RTFT but what about people with fixed holidays, like teachers? Tough luck if they're ill during the holidays, they can't take it another time. And nine times out of ten, they're so stressed by the end of term you can guarantee that they spend the first few days of every holiday being ill.

MissGuernsey · 10/02/2020 02:54

I used to work in the public sector and we were allowed to claim back annual leave if we were ill during the period of AL. I did it once. Just had a bit of a cold but it is my right!

VanGoghsDog · 10/02/2020 11:49

@Freeekedout

They are still entitled to it. But only for the statutory amount which is 28 days if they are full time. So, as long as they've had 28 days not working when they weren't sick, they have got their entitlement.
There is no legal entitlement to claim back holiday above the statutory minimum. So, they would not get the full 12 weeks back even if they were sick for all of it.

It's no different to if they were sick in term the, they be off then. The school would cope.
