Best place to listen to audible books?

Cottoneyed12 · 06/02/2020 13:19

I downloaded the app audible.

It’s £7.99 a month and allows 1 download per month of an audible book.

I’m really enjoying it but I listen to it too quickly and need to wait another month for the next book or pay £10+ for another book.

Is this the best way or does anyone have any other suggestions.

Thank you.

That sounds really expensive; I listen on youtube, currently Agatha Christie and other classic crime fiction. Does your library offer a audible lending service?

Very · 06/02/2020 13:37

Yes try your library - ours has an app (for ebooks too) and you can download all sorts, although there’s often a waitlist for the most popular titles. But it’s free!

Audible have regular offers where you can buy 3 credits for a fixed price. These can then be redeemed against full price books.

You can do a years audible membership that gives you 12 credits at once. Its £60 ish

Fleurygirl · 06/02/2020 14:10

Audible also have a Daily Deal, where you can buy a book for either £1.99 or £2.99, it's a great way of stocking up.
I also use my Library for free audiobooks, though there can be a bit of a wait. Between Audible and Borrowbox (Library App), I'm never without an Audiobook

ChessieFL · 06/02/2020 14:11

You should also sign up to the audible daily deal where you will get an offer to buy a book for 1.99 or 2.99

If you listen a lot there’s an annual membership with 24 credits for £110 ish if you can afford to pay that upfront.

Also, choose long books! I’ve recently downloaded Stephen Fry reading all the Sherlock Holmes books and it’s over 70 hours.

PlausibleSuit · 06/02/2020 14:16

Sometimes if you've already bought the Kindle ebook the audiobook is discounted. I've picked up a few that way, where I've paid (say) £3.99 for the ebook and £3.99 for the audiobook.

Not ideal having a book twice but it's cheaper than paying the twenty quid for the full-price audiobook.

Sassy306 · 06/02/2020 14:16

Not a long term solution but try cancelling your audible, they will usually offer you a lower price for a few months or an extra credit to stay :) I got 3 free credits when I joined. I then used my partners account to get another 3 credits as well and just cancelled the subscription

TheQueef · 06/02/2020 14:19

Check the free series from audible too.

seekingwaxwings · 06/02/2020 14:20

The narration of audiobooks makes or breaks them and Audible has the best narrators, I find.

As pp says look for long books. I spent my last two credits on The Woman in White and The Moonstone, which are around 45 hours long in total. Same with the daily deal - I recently bought 37 hours of Bleak House for £1.99.

I've put my subscription on hold temporarily while I catch up with my purchases. Also if you try to cancel or pause your subscription they will often offer you a reduced rate for a set period.

TheLidoOfThighs · 06/02/2020 14:37

Audible have lots of 2 sales too (beyond the daily deal), that’s the time to stock up! Make sure your signed up for the emails. If you’ve got 1 or 0 credits left you can buy an extra 3 credits for £18.

Shosha1 · 06/02/2020 15:18

If a book isnt over about 15 hours I read it instead.
I always look in the over 20 hours filter first.
Although j had already read them when they came out, I loved the Outlander series and down loaded them. They are between about 36 hrs and 69 hrs I think. Davina Portef us a brilliant narrator as well

CMOTDibbler · 06/02/2020 15:25

I keep a list of books I want to read on Amazon, and check daily for discounts to 99p or whatever for the Kindle book (happens really frequently). The Audible book is then massively discounted, and it works out usually to less than £5.

I also download the Audible free podcasts which are excellent, and the odd classic which gives you a huge length of listening time

goldenorbspider · 06/02/2020 15:31

Borrowbox! It's a service ran by libraries. All you need is a library card to join. Completely free. If there's a book you want that's not available just message them. I used audible but it worked out really expensive! I can listen to 1-2 books a week.

Patroclus · 06/02/2020 15:35

I think if you cancel it they offer it to you for cheaper. Also they quite often do sales.

You can find a lot for free on youtube or Librivox (although this has some atrocious readers sometimes)

Wolfff · 06/02/2020 15:50

You can get 3 credits for £18 on audible.

I also use RB digital which is free through my library.

FuchsiaG · 06/02/2020 16:04

I second trying borrowbox through your local library. I've joined various libraries online (not all offer this) and download from all of them.

You can return books on Audible to get a new one you know? Doesn't matter whether you finished it or not.

Plus daily deals (worth getting in the habit of checking - sometimes they're rubbish but then suddenly there'll be something you love) and the various free Audible original series. There seem to be frequent 2for1 type things running too.

I check out their Daily Dail too and look for the free offers and sales too.

I need to check out my library.

Agree with all the above. In summary:

  1. Get long books.
  2. Use Borrow box too.
  3. Cancel your membership, get the reduced price for a few months.
  4. Use the 3 credits for £18 offer.

Finally, once you've been a member for any length of time, go through your back catalogue. I've had Audible for about a decade and am re-reading some of the earlier titles I bought.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 06/02/2020 18:48

Also watch out for the 2for1 sales. Loads of free content for members too. West Cork is fab amongst others

Veterinari · 06/02/2020 18:56

The audible daily deals can be good - I've listened to some great books I'd never have chosen
