School uniform for very small reception twins

We have twin sisters starting in reception at our school in September. They are very small for their age and have just gone into age 2 clothes. I’m working with the parents to try to find school uniform solutions.

The smallest size I’ve found in anything is 2-3 but there isn’t much available and I can’t find summer dresses in that size at all.

Has anyone found that age 2-3 clothes can be easily altered to fit a smaller child? If it was just a question of taking hems up it wouldn’t be a problem but it’s also shoulders, waists and so on.

Any ideas very welcome.

Mark's and spencer do 2-3 I'm sure. The nursery class at my childrens school have to wear a uniform and some of them are only just 3 and very small. It's also standard that when kids go back in september the clothes are too big! My dds skirts are usually down to her ankles when they go back!

I think we’re resigned to them looking like little Victorian children for a couple of terms at least. Thanks everyone for your great ideas!

DD was (and still is) quite small for her age and in reception the best place for us was the 2-3 range at M&S - the ones with adjustable waist, all adjusted to the smallest possible setting. The slim/skinny fitting trousers are great. I agree with pinafores being very forgiving, and can be easily adjusted for length.

The plus side was that I didn’t have to buy DD any new logoed uniform until she was in year 3. Grin

Sorry, I explained upthread that some of our children come back in summer uniform in September if the weather is warm. I understand a year one child coming back in summer uniform, but I don't think there were any parents who bought summer uniform for their reception starters when my DS started school! I also think it's very normal for them to start in uniform a bit big.

Badabingbadabum · 06/02/2020 13:13

Could you try local uniform suppliers and see if they have non-standard sizes? Might be pricey but you've suggested that they may not grow quickly they might get a lot of use out of items.

Vertbaudet (French brand online) does small, slim fitting clothes. Including white polo shirts.

My DS is on the 10 centile (UK charts) and their slim fit trousers fit when tightened at the waist (with the button system).

With respect, this is what the parents have told me, that their girls will start in summer dresses if the weather is still warm.

What about grey/black leggings and a plain tshirt/jumper in the right colour

That’s been more or less what they’ve worn in nursery, but once they start school they would like to be the same as their older sibling.

Sorry to sidetrack, but if you are on the P&C I think it would be a good thing to tell reception parents that they only need buy winter uniform until after Easter, as their child nay outgrow summer uniform before they need it again. That would take the pressure off poorer families, and these parents too. Just a thought. I could not have afforded two uniforms within weeks of each other when my DS started school and that was buying from the uniform pool.

bookmum08 · 06/02/2020 15:48

My titchy little girl wore pinafores as they were less likely to fall down but yes she looked like a Victorian School girl. Still we got 4 years wear out of the same blazer. I think we got ours from Matalan. I think long skirts and dresses looks fine though.

FamilyOfAliens · 06/02/2020 15:54

What’s the P&C?

If you have a local independent school uniform shop they may do some items in 18months-2yrs. If they haven't got any they may be able to order some.

H&M also do some school uniform in 18months-2yrs, including gingham summer dresses.

ManiacalLapwing · 06/02/2020 16:01

What’s the P&C? Sorry, PTA.

FamilyOfAliens · 06/02/2020 16:03

@10brokengreenbottles

Thank you also much. Can’t believe they do such tiny sizes!

In a warm September we have girls including reception in summer dresses.

ThreeLeggedCat · 06/02/2020 16:04

Lots of reception kids have uniform that’s a bit big. My completely average size DS’s shorts met his socks at his knees - at least until Easter in Reception. I get that these two kids will be smaller than average, but they won’t look out of place with uniform that’s a bit too big for them.

Maniacal I work at the school, I’m not a parent, which is why I’m supporting this family.

Teeny weeny twins, who will probably still be the same size next September?

Agree with the M&S suggestions. My children started at a pre school with uniform aged 2 and got it from there. Also agree with gingham dress and pinafore dresses best - my very slim 6 year old prefers the dresses as they don't fall down.
