Just weighed myself- 16stone 8. I am disgusted

I had a thread on here last year about how I was a bridesmaid for my friends wedding abroad and needed to lose weight. At this point I weighed 15 and a half stone. Lots of lovely people commented with advice. I didn’t do anything about it though, the wedding happened and it was fine. Had a lovely day.

I’ve just weighed myself and I’m 16stone 8. Absolutely disgusting. BMI of 42. My husband weighs 10 stone and is super fit. I must look like a pig next to him. A pig. I know what it is, snacking and no exercise. My meals aren’t very high calorie (not underestimating or denial, they genuinely aren’t) but I’ll think nothing of having a full multi pack of crisps, 6 cans of Pepsi (my downfall) a massive bar of chocolate etc a day. God I am so ashamed, I used to be a size 10. No wonder my
Husband won’t have sex with me. I’m 31 and morbidly obese. I have a kid, what example am I setting him? I’m sat here in tears, over hall starts today. I’ve lost weight before on 5:2 diet, I lost 4 stone and was a size 10. Going to get back onto that, starting today. Starting the 30 day shred as well, did It last time and it was brutal but good. I’m retraining and spend a fortune on snacks at uni every day so not taking my
Card/ deleting Apple Pay. Please anyone who comments I know how disgusting I am, I don’t need abuse I just need to get it out somewhere.

You can join us on the fb weight loss group. 5 stone fat fighters.

I've started listening to the Brain over Binge podcast. There's a book too and free ebooks. You've said that your meals are healthy but the bingeing is the problem (same here). For the last week I've been listening to the podcasts in the car. Stopping bingeing would be the most important thing to do. I listen to the Emma Guns podcast and she raved about the book on a recent podcast and said that it helped to mentally reboot her re bingeing.

I’m not on Facebook but thanks for the
Offer. I’ll have a look at the podcast xx

OP you're not disgusting. Sometimes the scales give us the shock that's needed to make a change. You mentioned that you previously lost four stone, so you know you can do it.

Could you try swapping the Pepsi to diet Pepsi in the first instance, and from there try cutting down/replacing with water?
I'm currently trying to shift the baby weight after my second child and have so far lost 2.5 stone by sticking to 1200 calories a day. I don't cut out whole food groups, I just stick to my limit. So if I fancy a bag of crisps, I just work it into my 1200 'allowance'.

FebruaryRainandSleet · 06/02/2020 11:55

That sounds tough.

Absolutely agree with this:
Focussing on what you should eat rather than what you shouldn't is much better for your willpower and state of mind

Also with the idea that you should bring in the changes one at a time: this week get out and walk, next week cut down on the Pepsi, another week cut down on the crisps... etc. Makes it less boring!

Walnutwhipster · 06/02/2020 12:02

Stop beating yourself up. There's far worse things in life to be than overweight. Don't give up because you have a bit of a blip either and find something to do with your hands when you feel like reaching for a snack. Idle hands...

Ohyesiam · 06/02/2020 12:05

Op, my heart goes out to you, please don’t be disgusted with yourself.

Over eating is a coping mechanism, don’t give yourself a hard time.
I struggle with over eating ( and I have quite a stress-free privileged life, I just never learned heathy ways of dealing with every day feelings) so I really understand.
Come and join us on the lovely supportive 5:2 thread. You could also consider doing a few weeks of the Fast 800 to give yourself a rapid weight loss boost.
But use your strong feelings to motivate yourself.
You are not alone.

lazylinguist · 06/02/2020 12:12

I've been eating tons of veg, fruit and stuff over the last few days after reading a brilliant book called "How Not to Diet". It's amazing the difference in how I feel after 3 days - lighter, brighter, more energetic and more positive. I genuinely think that you can't just make it about what to avoid eating. Your body needs lots of nutrients. If you don't give them to it, that makes you feel hungry and low. Give your body what it needs, and it will begin to stop demanding crisps!

1Wildheartsease · 06/02/2020 12:29

I'm really impressed that you got on the scales. (It took me some weeks of losing weight before I dared.) This is a great start to your project.

As everyone says - please don't be disgusted. This can happen to anyone. You didn't choose to be overweight - the things that caused it might seem to be under your control but we all know that it is not that simple. Eating is attached to many other matters. It really isn't all about 'will-power'. I find that there is a limit to how long you can 'hang on' to something that feels like depriving yourself of the things you want.

I'm glad that you have a plan that works for you. There are so many different approaches and they all work for someone :) Without being self-critical, do think about why it didn't last long-term. What manageable thing could you do differently?

I found (for me) that after just a few weeks, low-carbing turned a switch in my head and stopped the relentless desire for things I thought I loved (mostly carbs funnily enough). I really don't love or crave them any more and that has made losing weight MUCH easier.

(I thought that the relentless desire for foods was normal and that -even when not on a 'diet'- everyone spent even their meal-times thinking about snacks to come.)

Like you, I liked the look of 5:2 and planned to use it as well but haven't needed to yet.

ThisIsItGotToChange · 06/02/2020 13:26

I eat when I’m bored. I have a lovely life and not many stresses apart from the usual money/kids stuff. I feel like I need food to accompany to everything -10 minute break at uni, crisps and chocolate bar, train journey to big city-‘grab bag of crisps, pop, sandwiches and chocolate. Bad day-food. Good day-wow let’s open the chocolate. Watching a film- need some snacks go with it and so on and so on. When I lost weight previously I was so strict with myself in terms of sticking to my
Calories. I had a takeaway/meal out once a week to look forward to and if I went out in the week and ate a bit more or had a bag of
Crisps etc I would pull it back the next day. I was a size 10 and felt AMAZING. I could wear what I wanted and finally I wasn’t the chubby girl. But I was with my exdp, had a shit relationship and just began to eat and eat again. Literally
Thousands of calories a day. Went up to 13 stone. Spilt up, lost 2 and a half stone. Met now DH and put 4 stone on in 18 months. Happy as can be right now but see eating as a reward all the time or something to do to pass the time

veryvery · 06/02/2020 15:52

What might help with the eating whilst bored is a book you really enjoy. Carry it around with you so you can pick it up at dull moments.

Puffthemagicdragartist · 06/02/2020 16:09

Wow - there's some amazing support on here...
I'm in a similar boat, OP: just tipped over into the 16 stone territory and need to sort it out.
Hope you don't mind me following 'your' thread for inspiration and supportSmile

MrsApplepants · 06/02/2020 16:13

You’re not disgusting and you can do this. We’ll be with you all the way

ThisIsItGotToChange · 06/02/2020 16:49

Thanks again everyone! I’ve downloaded a calorie counter and feel a lot more positive. I put in what i ate yesterday into it and yesterday I had 4000 calories!!! 4000!!!!!!!! Terrible. But feel so much better and thanks to everyone for the support and to anyone in the same boat good luck!

I’m going to use this thread as a little slimming club, will try to keep it updated!

Try Slimming World. Very easy. Cut out the carbs and sugar. I lost 4 stone on it a few years ago, starting at 16st 1lb. Since then I've put 2st back on, but I'm back at SW again. Obviously you can't eat vast quantities of crisps and pop, but you still get to eat quite a lot.

ThisIsItGotToChange · 06/02/2020 20:00

Ending today on 1100 calories, did have a bag of crisps earlier but yesterday I had 6’Blush so doing a lot better!

puds11 · 07/02/2020 09:53

@ThisIsItGotToChange well done. Please don’t sweat a bag of crisps, you have allow some treats otherwise it’s unsustainable. I tend to have a fudge or a coconut chocco pot for my treat. Also, snack a jacks caramel are amazing and low cal! Hope today is going well!

shinynewapple2020 · 07/02/2020 11:08

A simple swap of Pepsi Max (it's sugar free) for your full sugar Pepsi would be a really easy swap - take you just a couple of days to get used to the slightly different taste.

(Yes i know water's better but IME it's best to start with the little swaps we are less likely to notice so replacing sugar with sweeteners or switching to skimmed milk can be an easy start.

I try to have a rule that unless a drink contains alcohol it shouldn't have any calories in it- so an Americano with drop of skim milk rather than a latte, sugar free squad and a bowl of fruit rather than a smoothie.

Another thing which isn't too difficult is to think of all the vegetables you enjoy, then make sure half of your plate is vegetables so this will help fill you up with minimal calories and you will still be able to eat a lot of the foods you enjoy just in smaller portions.,

Also try making yourself a big pot of vegetable soup and using this as your first go-to for snacks as it's filling, healthy and low calorie.

These are all things that work for me when I've lost weight. And I do sympathise / empathise with you putting it back on again - I'm a bit if yo-yo dieter myself, Keeping it off isn't always easy.

I think whether you do 5:2, low carb, counting calories, slimming world or weight watchers in terms of diet is down to what suits you but I do find that attending a club with the weekly weigh in does focus me more and keep me on track.

ThisIsItGotToChange · 07/02/2020 16:04

Today’s going ok, getting really hungry now but I had a big (but healthy) dinner and don’t want to snack. Took DS the shop after school and whereas normally I’d grab a drink, crisps to snack on till DH gets home
I didn’t have anything. Yeah I think I might switch to the sugar free drinks, just need to train my mind a bit.

It’s so easy to fall into bad habits.dont beat yourself up! As long as you commit to making changes not for vanity reasons but for your health. If you just swapped your snacks for healthy ones not necessarily fruit and nuts but even lower calorie versions and maybe limit the Pepsi drinking to a couple at the weekend I’m sure you’d see a difference without much effort. Also I defo recommend a Fitbit! It’s amazing how competitive you become when your in a step challenge you’ll find yourself walking more just so you don’t come last! Anyway good luck...sounds like you have a busy year!!

puds11 · 07/02/2020 22:32

If you switch to sugar free pop, you can then switch from there to soda water and from soda water to plain old tap water (or add juice, I do Wink). Cold turkey on no fizzy drinks would be brutal with everything else.

WhenPushComesToShove · 07/02/2020 22:42

Don't despair OP. I was in a similar situation to you but joined slimming world 4 months ago. You can eat loads so long as it's the right thing. I am never hungry and snack on fruit and fat free yoghurts. Lost 2-1/2 stone so far and for the first time in forever feel like I have got my weight/ comfort eating under control. My best advice is there's never a 'right' time to do it so you may as well just get on and do it. Very best of luck - you can do it

stairway · 07/02/2020 22:52

Cuting out the Pepsi and chocolate and crisps might be enough to loose the weight. I wouldn’t try anything to extreme/ limiting Try and replace the Pepsi with tea or something similar.

ThisIsItGotToChange · 09/02/2020 09:49

Yesterday didn’t go too well as we went out for dinner AND tea. The first place wasn’t too bad as I had a jacket potato with beans (no butter) and a side salad. The place at night I was still quite full so just had a small pizza (literally the lowest calorie thing on the menu Shock ) and are 3 slices of that but then we went for cocktails and I had 4. But normally on a Saturday I’d have crisps and Pepsi and everything in between but I didn’t and I was more conscious of what I was consuming rather than mindlessly shovelling it in

You got this op. Your meals sound fine - you cut out the pepsi and crisps and that's the bit that will be making the most difference at this stage. Keep avoiding that stuff between meals and you will shed some weight. You can then look at other things but start with that.
