There are a few people at work who when they waft past you leave a gorgeous smell of freshly washed clothes /soapowder. I've tried but we don't seem to be able to achieve that. Surf, Ariel, Lenor, washing machine cleaned regularly.. Makes no difference. How do they (you) achieve it?

I remember my childminder asking what products I used to wash dd's clothes as apparently dd always smelled fantastic.
At the time, I was buying from either Lidl or Aldi (detergents and fabric softener) but I suggested it might be this product which I used on dd after every bath.
Her childminder seemed to think that the smell was coming from dd's clothes however. Never found out whether Lidl or Aldi's products ever achieved the result she wanted!

This is something I've spent years trying to achieve too... (Grin actually have) and have found as someone else said that the Ariel liquid or the Ariel pods smell the best, I alternate between the two because they smell slightly different and then I don't get used to the smell. Also use more than you're meant to...! Stuff not tumble dried or just finished off in tumble drier smells best! If I ever use fabric conditioner I use the pink method one but not often, it smells lovely but a bit over powering for day to day stuff I think!

I use Fairy and always get comments on how fresh the clothes smell the best "trick" I've found to have that longer lasting smell I discovered when DS was sick and I was constantly washing small loads as the sick smell was so pungent- it seems the less you put in the machine with all the Fairy goodness the more the smell lasts Grin

Blue Comfort Intense leaves a lasting, traditional laundry smell. Definitely better when the things are line dried, but it's still noticeable after tumble drying.

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 08:01

I was very proud to have a fragrant baby however! Because she sure as hell had stinky poos!

TheWuzzles · 06/02/2020 08:08

I think making sure your washing machine clean is no 1, running a hot cycle with a squirt of bleach. No 2, leave your drawer open when your not using it to stop it going mouldy, no.3 is yellow comfort

vikkimoog · 06/02/2020 08:12

it's horrible sickly chemicals

Oulu · 06/02/2020 08:16

Why on earth would you want to smell of washing powder?

AhoyMrBeaver · 06/02/2020 08:18

It's a pleasant smell to lots of people.

Artus · 06/02/2020 08:19

On the other hand if I am in a confined space with someone smelling so strongly of fabric conditioner I feel nauseous.

GaaaaarlicBread · 06/02/2020 08:20

It’s all down to the conditioner , we use Fairy and I tell you now it’s lovely ! I sometimes wear a work shirt two days in a row and it smells the same on the second day. They’re brilliant (the pods )

AhoyMrBeaver · 06/02/2020 08:21

Well yeah, we can't control other people.

YappityYapYap · 06/02/2020 08:27

I tried smol, was rubbish. Ariel powder and blue lenor works the best for me

Lifeaback · 06/02/2020 08:30

I’m always getting compliments on myself and my kids smelling lovely- I use Ariel but the powder version, comfort (the white one) fabric conditioner and a few of the Lenor unstoppables (the blue ones). This ‘recipe’ seems to work and the fragrance holds really well

Powerplant · 06/02/2020 08:39

Another vote for blue Lenor but I also find the blue Aldi Tesco etc ones quite good too

Planetzog · 06/02/2020 08:42

The yellow Sainsbury's fabric conditioner smells lovely

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 08:42

I notice different laundry smells when I go into different houses - especially if clothes are air dried.

It's a nice smell I think! Fresh and clean.

PigletJohn · 06/02/2020 08:53

The reason you can smell other people's washing but not your own, is that your nose has become accustomed to it by constant exposure.

Keep several boxes of powder of various brands, and use a different one each week, and you will be able to smell each different one for a while.

Excess amounts of powder and fabsoft will cause sludge to build up in your machine, especially if you do low-temperature washes.

userxx · 06/02/2020 09:01

@TheWuzzles Do you squirt the bleach in the drum or drawer?

borntobequiet · 06/02/2020 09:05

Another who can’t understand why anyone wants to smell of washing powder. I prefer Guerlain.

PenguinsOnParade · 06/02/2020 09:09

Pink Surf powder; blue Lenor; no tumble dryer.

I used to have to use unscented powders because of sensitive skin and I hated that my clothes never smelled nice, I'm glad my skin has calmed down enough to use the scented ones now.

jaspercatx · 06/02/2020 09:20

My MIL always smells like freshly washed clothes and i couldn't work out what I was doing wrong! so I asked for the secret formula which is just to use more fabric conditioner than the standard amount Smile (will cost more but worth it Wink ) But tumble drying does kill the smell!!

slipperywhensparticus · 06/02/2020 09:25

I like the kids to smell fresh and clean I hardly use fabric softener i use aldi product or persil non bio seems to hold the scent

TwentyViginti · 06/02/2020 09:42

I don't use fabric softener and only use non bio washing liquids. Which non bio ones have a pleasant, lingering scent?

Satsuma2 · 06/02/2020 09:56

Do an empty wash cycle with dishwasher powder in your machine and it will be squeaky clean. Be wary of using more washing powder/ liquid as it can irritate the skin. The smelly beads are very bad for the environment so try and avoid them.
When I can smell people's soap powder it just smells like cheap stuff from the pound shop. I'd rather just smell clean with a hint of perfume.
