Where in live in Manchester with a baby?

Mirrorxx · 05/02/2020 17:35

I am hoping for some suggestions on areas in Manchester that would be good for a couple having their first baby.
We both work in the city centre full time so need a shortish commute so we can get home in time for nursery closing.
Ideally we want to spend max 400k and be close to a nursery, good primary school and tram/train station. Any ideas?

Sale in greater Manchester is a 20 minute tram ride from Manchester city centre, and has several primary schools and nurseries

gobbynorthernbird · 05/02/2020 19:10

Stretford, Sale, Prestwich

gobbynorthernbird · 05/02/2020 19:12

Or, have you looked at staying in the town centre/Ancoats? People do still live there with kids.

There doesn’t seem to be much for sale in stretford but the short commute from there does appeal. I wasn’t sure if there was much to do in stretford itself or if you have to travel to neighboring areas

@gobbynorthernbird
I think I’d consider staying central but not sure by DH would. There do seem to be some houses available but I’d have to look into schools

Heaton Moor Stockport
Train station in Manchester about 15 mins
Or Didsbury,
Lovely yummy mummy area

Stretford is very boring, not much to do. Chorlton is better but still a bit studenty. Urmston is nice, good schools and local stuff to do. Train station, though the northern rail reliability is an issue. Tram coming to the Trafford centre in the next month or so, it's about a 30minute walk from the centre of Urmston.

Sale and Altrincham are both nice, but pricier than Urmston.

Prestwich is lovely, no train, just the tram, but pretty reliable.

Monton is quite nice, bit small but nice community feel. Patricroft train station isn't far and there's the tram in. Eccles. Eccles isn't brilliant at the moment but definitely on the up (house prices have doubled in 5 years) so a good investment opportunity.

Very small primary school Heaton moor
Tithe barn

Mirrorxx · 05/02/2020 19:24

@granadagirl I do like didsbury but we could only get a small house there and I’m not sure if it’s worth the sacrifice

Stretford (around Edge Lane for example) is getting better than it was. It probably ever won't be super exciting, but you're 10 mins walk from the centre of Chorlton, or a few mins on the tram to Sale or Alty.

Callimanco · 05/02/2020 19:25

This house is in an Excellent area, very close to Chorlton, close to parks and 5 mins walk to the tram...

@99problemsandthecatis1 I like monton but the tram is very slow to the city centre which has put me off. Seems good value though

@Mirrorxx I think there's a free school in Ancoats, but the children I know in town are still too young for school so I'm not sure what the plans are.

Redshoeblueshoe · 05/02/2020 19:27

Calli that's a great location, next to Longford Park, and only a short walk to the tram

bluecitygirl · 05/02/2020 19:28

Stretford has good schools and does now have a nightlife. The new food hall is great a d a few new nice bars etc. Lots of investment coming with brunt wood / Council buying key property for a whole town masterplan.

Urmston is nice as is sale. Sale town centre is also getting some investment.

bellinisurge · 05/02/2020 19:28

Look at East Manchester along the trainline to Glossop.

gobbynorthernbird · 05/02/2020 19:28

@Callimanco that's the sort of thing I was thinking when I suggested Stretford.

whiteroseredrose · 05/02/2020 19:29

What about Timperley? It's about 25 mins from the Arndale by tram.

Trafford schools are good and there is a great soft play area / skating locally. You're a few minutes from Altrincham.

There's a 3 bed house on Rightmove just near the tram for £400k. Also close to Park Road Primary which is very sought after.

Mirrorxx · 05/02/2020 19:31

@Callimanco that area looks good, close to the tram which is perfect for me. Not sure the house would work for us without changing the layout

The one I meant was on Malpas Drive. There's also a 3 bed semi on Buckingham Rd for £350k.

ItsLegalTender · 05/02/2020 19:32

Don't come to Poynton it's horrible Wink

granadagirl · 05/02/2020 19:35

This you type
3 bedroom semi-detached house
Kensington Close, Heaton Moor, Stockport, SK4
On rightmove

MummaGiles · 05/02/2020 19:36

Urmston/Flixton if you want a short commute by train. You will get a good family home there for up to £400k and the schools in the area are excellent (falls under Trafford so Grammar system).

granadagirl · 05/02/2020 19:46

Also Cheadle is lovely

Napqueen1234 · 05/02/2020 19:49

Chorlton is lovely loads of young families short commute great nurseries trendy vibe but very family friendly. We moved here from London have two young DC and love it!
