UC and having to look for work but what if you are home educating ?

Do they waive the requirement for one parent to look for work? How does it work as I can’t find much info online anywhere

RoseAndRose · 05/02/2020 12:25

No, they do not waive the requirement.

The state provides free schooling, but no funding for HE

Changeembrace · 05/02/2020 12:28

Home educators are tied to the same rules as a schooled family, you will be expected to work. However the job centre are not allowed to tell you to use school as a child care option. We suggest not mentioning home education to the JC as we hear all too often people have their claims cancelled, or extra demands placed on them. You can look for evening work or daytime work etc, what ever suits you the best. There are home ed friendly child minders out there too.

universalheadache · 05/02/2020 12:28

So what happens , you just get less money ?
Can they waive it if one HE child has SEN ?

I’ve been googling but struggling to get any answers

Just worrying for whenever we are changed over this will be an issue

OP posts:
Changeembrace · 05/02/2020 12:30

You are expected to look for work

If you don’t - then you will not receive any of the relevant benefits

HardAsSnails · 05/02/2020 12:31

If your child with SENs receives DLA then you can claim Carers Allowance which will mean you won't have to look for work.

Skyechasemarshalontheway · 05/02/2020 12:31

They don't waive it at all for home educators. Sen or not.

You will get the same money anyone else would depending on your income, children's ages etc and other benefits.

universalheadache · 05/02/2020 12:33

Ok so it will be the carers allowance that means they waive the requirement not HE but then as the child receiving dla is school age will they not assume availability in school hours

universalheadache · 05/02/2020 12:34

I suppose I have to hope we don’t get changed over from tax credits to uc for a while

If you are in a couple, can you share the workload? Between the both of you you might be able to do 6 or 7 days' work at minimum and work different times. Depending on where you live and the cost of living in that area.

raspberryk · 05/02/2020 12:45

You'll have to do what any other family had to do if you don't want your kids in childcare or school...
One of you works days and one of you works evenings and weekends or nights.
Can't you look for home ed friendly childcare i.e. private tutors, nanny, child minder? Or team up with another home ed family and take turns who takes the lessons.

universalheadache · 05/02/2020 12:49

No as Dh is full time he can’t reduce his hours he wouldn’t be allowed and if he did it would be counter productive as he can earn more than I could
Maybe they’ll just have to sanction us as I need to do what’s best for the children

OP posts:
universalheadache · 05/02/2020 12:50

I’m hoping we won’t have to change over immediately but it’s hard to find out which areas are switching people over and when

OP posts:
berrynice16 · 05/02/2020 12:51

Depending on how much your DH earns you may be placed in the "light touch" group in terms of your work searching requirements

HardAsSnails · 05/02/2020 12:51

but then as the child receiving dla is school age will they not assume availability in school hours

No, it doesn't work like that.

universalheadache · 05/02/2020 12:52

Approx £22000 is there a chart for various levels ?

OP posts:
slipperywhensparticus · 05/02/2020 12:52

Being fed and housed is best for the children

Look, if you claim dla and carers you get zero work commitments, or you can earn over the threshold and not rely on support

universalheadache · 05/02/2020 12:53

Where do I find the threshold information

OP posts:
QueenOfCatan · 05/02/2020 12:55

You'll have to find he friendly childcare, when I nannied I worked with a he family and I'm now using a he friendly childminder whilst I'm at work as my preschooler (and baby) will be home ed.

universalheadache · 05/02/2020 12:58

I can’t see any nanny or childminder wanting to be employed by us as it would mean 1-1 care for one child (hrm hrc for dla) they then wouldn’t be able to take on any more charges
I also wouldn’t want to as I feel it’s my choice to home educate for these reasons and I want to be the one actually caring fur and educating

OP posts:
universalheadache · 05/02/2020 13:01

I need to try and find out when a likely change would be before I stress about this I’ve just been reading so much negativity about it I was thinking how will this work for our family

OP posts:
TalaxuArmiuna · 05/02/2020 13:01

There's no requirement for HE to take place during core "office hours" though, and no requirement that the work you seek should be so either. Allowing for 8 hours of sleep a night there are 112 waking hours available each week - and surely your DH is at home for around 60 of those despite full time work - plenty of time for the children to get 30 hours of home education (presumably during the time when DH is at work) and for you to work at least 30 hours (presumably during the time when your DH is at home) and still have 52 hours in-hand to do whatever you like with (hopefully including a bit of rest!)

universalheadache · 05/02/2020 13:04

do They specify you have to get a job for a certain amount of hours ?

OP posts:
universalheadache · 05/02/2020 13:06

8 hours of sleep I wish I haven’t had a full nights sleep in 8 years due to night time care
Dh can’t do that as he has to drive and operate dangerous machinery so he has to have some unbroken sleep or it’s dangerous

Are you allowed to be self employed and work from home or do cleaning but what if it’s only say a few hours a week ? I’m utterly exhausted as it is
