What's your tip tip when cooking?

Mine is.... Cook your carrots whole!

Just that, when you have carrots for dinner. Cook them while. Don't peel or chop them. (Peel if you must)

However, just cook them as they come and cut up once cooked.

They will be the most carroty carrots you've tasted.

I tell people this, they dont believe me...and then normally a few weeks later they'll surreptitiously way and are converts

Sometimes you have to pick the slightly shorter carrots .. so they fit in your saucepan.

Put a hair mask on - the heat from the kitchen makes it work better

Cut chillis, meat, fish etc with scissors instead of a knife - much easier

If you are using a recipe and there is a prep time listed - double it. There isn't a written recipe in the world that doesn't seriously underestimate how long it takes a non-professional chef to do things.

Have a bowl to one side when preparing food. Put all the peelings, egg shells etc in there and empty into the bin when required. Keeps your workspace tidy.

The carrots thing is an intriguing idea, will definitely try it!

I already use a bowl for peelings, it is indeed most helpful, especially in a tiny kitchen.

My tip - decent properly sharp knives, get a sharpening steel, & use a wooden cutting board for everything except meat. So much easier than faffing around with crappy serrated knives.

Use surgical gloves when cutting chillis, onion or marinating meat

Put baked beans/sweet corn in a mug or cup when reheating in microwave. So much easier to pour

If you need fresh tomatoes chopped, don’t go through the whole boiling water / peeling palaver. Just grate them. The skin all stays on the outside as the flesh goes through.

Put a bit of oil on your hands before cooking chilli. When you wash the oil off your hands no chilli residue will be left.

If you’re cooking something like an English breakfast that means you have to handle lots of raw food but at different times, squirt some soap onto the side of the sink before you start so you can dip your hand in and wash them without having to handle to soap bottle.

My tip is always chop chili with scissors. Hold the green tip and cut.

Peel ginger with a spoon.

All the goodness is right under the skin and you loose it when you peel with a knife. It's also so much easier.

This isn't really a cooking tip, but a serving one: cut pizza with scissors instead of a knife or pizza wheel.

Cut chives with scissors - easier than with a knife.

Put a spoonful of instant coffee in your spaghetti bolognaise (whilst cooking) gives it a gorgeous deep flavour, works well with quorn mince spag Bol aswell

Don't be afraid of using a high flame when searing /sealing meat.

So many times I've seen people cooking meat over a piddly little mid heat flame and it doesn't seal or sear just boils in its own juices.

Mashed potato needs much more butter than you think.

If your sponge cake domes you need to turn the heat down a touch and cook a few minutes longer

The easiest way to cook a full English is in the oven. Basically everything except eggs and beans on a full English can be baked. Takes a bit longer but with a bit of tinfoil on the trays it drastically reduces the washing up and stress.

Always dry fry your spices for a minute or two

Frozen chopped garlic. Game changer. Ditto chilli and ginger.

A decent set of scales with transform your baking, and on the subject of baking, most American recipes have far too much sugar in.

Keep root ginger in the freezer and grate it frozen. The skin is easy to scrape off and it grates better.

Weigh water and milk instead of using a measuring jug, 1ml = 1g.
