Mine is.... Cook your carrots whole!

Just that, when you have carrots for dinner. Cook them while. Don't peel or chop them. (Peel if you must)

However, just cook them as they come and cut up once cooked.

They will be the most carroty carrots you've tasted.

I tell people this, they dont believe me...and then normally a few weeks later they'll surreptitiously way and are converts

Wats your top tip?!

Make legs for your jacket potato from cocktail sticks. Microwave for 10 mins beforr ovening.

It helps rhe jacket cook through more evenly and stops the horrible microwave spot. Once ovened tast yum.

Since I discovered Asda’s utterly brilliant little glass pots of red chilli and ginger paste, I no longer buy fresh chillis or ginger and faff about peeling, cutting up or chopping them.

Grate onions and garlic, quicker than chopping.

When dealing with fish wash your hands in cold water afterwards to take away the smell. Washing with hot water will cook the fish on your hands and the smell will be harder to get rid of.

Do not peel garlic before crushing.

"Does it take much longer like that?"

Not really, a few minutes

Whisk your mash potato.

(Mash the whole potatoes for about a minute with butter then get the whisk out with the milk.)

If you have lots of garlic to peel...

Put your garlic cloves into a cup of boiling water for a minute to make the skin come off easily in one piece.

and on the subject of baking, most American recipes have far too much sugar in.

I tend to try new recipes with at least half the sugar recommended. I've got down to a quarter on some and it tastes fine!

Lweji · 05/02/2020 10:23

To peel tomatoes for cooking. Stick a fork in them, run them through a flame until the skin starts to crack and it comes off on its own.

PS: also top tip: don't leave your cooking unattended for too long. Blush

If you are prepping something smelly (garlic etc), you can rub your hands on a metal sink to get rid of the smell when washing. Or anything metal really.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 05/02/2020 10:24

For most things, you don't need to bother preheating your oven. Just turn it on and whack it in.

(Exceptions are things like puff pastry)

CIT80 · 05/02/2020 10:27

Cook swede whole in the microwave and scoop out the fluffy inside when done - no more near death experiences trying to chop a hard swede

UsernameTaken76 · 05/02/2020 10:29

Clean as you go. Fill the sink with hot soapy water when you start and then clean as you finish with tools. Means you don’t have a mountain of washing up at the end

FruityWidow · 05/02/2020 11:56

After handling garlic, rub your hands on a stainless steel sink to get rid of the garlicy smell from your fingers.

Never boil veg. Always steam. Much better flavour

Cutting pizza is easier with good kitchen scissors than a pizza cutter.
Use a potato peeler for cheese instead of a grater (the wide straight across peeler) you use less and it's very fast and easier.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 05/02/2020 12:53

Cutting pizza is easier with good kitchen scissors than a pizza cutter.

How? You just run the wheel across it a few times, rather than having to pick up a hot, floppy pizza and snip snip snip your way through several decreasing size pieces.

theoriginalmadambee · 05/02/2020 12:54

When making hasselback potatoes use a cheese slicer for the butter on top. You get long slices to cover the top of the potato, but thin.

If you like parmesan, use a potato peeler, it makes nice curls of cheese on top of a dish.

Yes to scissors.. for pizza of course, but also for salad, peppers, chicken in eg curries, stir fries, just chop it down the pan.

If you don't have a slicer, use a potato peeler for cabbage, cucumber etc.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 05/02/2020 13:28

Get someone else to do it.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 05/02/2020 15:25

@BuzzShitbagBobbly you dont pick it up you lift it up slightly with the scissors and cut.

The hole in the end of a saucepan handle can be used to put your wooden spoon in Smile
