Best/easiest new born baby carrier?

pinkstar01 · 04/02/2020 11:17

I've got an almost 6 week old and need to put him in something for the school run, looking into baby bjorn but open to suggestions.
I just want him to be warm and comfortable as he's quite fussy!

Another option is getting the Doona car seat/stroller, what is the better option?

Baby Bjorns aren't recommended for newborns because they don't support their backs and hips by keeping their legs in the 'frog' position.

I found a wrap carrier, like Moby really, really good. Once I'd practiced a few times it was easy.
Another good option is the Ergobaby with the newborn insert. Much easier as you just put it on like a rucksack. And will last into toddlerhood.

No don't do a baby Bjorn, they're bad for baby and mum as it lets them dangle and pulls on your back.

I'd go close caboo until 4 months and then I find a structured carrier better once they're 4-6 months. Boba or tula are both fab and quick to put on for the school run.

Second a moby. Really easy to use after a little practice

Settlersofcatan · 04/02/2020 12:13

Close caboo - really quick and easy to get baby in and out

DesLynamsMoustache · 04/02/2020 12:14

Another vote for Close Caboo. Then we switched to an Ergo Baby

randomsabreuse · 04/02/2020 12:14

Stretchy wraps are great once you're used to it as you just pre tie the wrap then pop baby in on arrival.

If you really prefer buckles any of Manduca, Tula, Ergo could do the job - Manduca has built in infant seat which is nice - buckle carriers are less quick than a pre tied wrap but much quicker than tying a woven.

Try to get to a sling library as they're so personal, especially the buckle carriers!

Cdl84 · 04/02/2020 12:15

We used an amawrap which is a soft sling and very comfortable for small babies.

Eeeeek2 · 04/02/2020 12:17

Presuming you're doing the school run by car? Then you want something easy/quick to pop baby into for short time to nip in and out of the school. Either a wrap or ring sling or can you pop your current car seat onto a set of wheels with a set of adapters. The doona looks like an expensive gimmick.

lauryloo · 04/02/2020 12:20

Close caboo is brilliant for this age

Eeeeek2 · 04/02/2020 12:20

Sorry suggestions I've used the amawrap (great for little babies but does your back in once they're bigger) and girasol ring sling which I currently use for the school run with 14 month old.

NuffingChora · 04/02/2020 12:21

I’d also vote for a moby wrap - any of the soft stretchy wraps really as they’re all much of a muchness. Can tie it in the morning then pop him in and out as needed. Close caboo by comparison is faffy and much less comfortable for both you and baby IMO (found the rings dug in to me, and the outside piece would slip too so felt less secure for baby), then once you hit 10-12 weeks or so would also be fine in an ergo or similar.

INeedNewShoes · 04/02/2020 12:24

Ergobaby Adapt which adapts from newborn (with minimum weight though) up to 4 years. It's just SO straightforward and comfortable.

I didn't get on with the Caboo at all and DD didn't like it either. We just couldn't get her in a good position. (DD was very skinny and I wonder if this had something to do with it.)

Spaceman101 · 04/02/2020 12:28

I'd try and get to a sling library where they can advise you and help you chose the best one for you and your baby. Personally I like the close caboo for a newborn.

Purplelion · 04/02/2020 12:43

I started with a close caboo with of mine, then moved onto a connecta. I also have a ring sling for my 5 month old which I love!

IvinghoeBeacon · 04/02/2020 12:48

I didn’t get on with close caboo. Didn’t feel secure enough. I have a stretchy wrap (boba) and a connecta woven carrier (which has a strap to adapt for newborn). I hired a Tula free to grow last time, which I loved. Ergobaby for older, though actually the one I have (Omni 360) is suitable from newborn if baby weighs enough, but I find it not “enclosed” enough for tiny ones

IvinghoeBeacon · 04/02/2020 12:49

Highly recommend a sling library if you have one nearby

pinkstar01 · 04/02/2020 12:49

Oh I have a Boba wrap but I can't get the hang of it! I guess I'll have to keep practicing

Badabingbadabum · 04/02/2020 12:50

A stretchy wrap is great for newborns or if you want a more structured carrier an ergobaby, connecta/integra, tula or (my favourite that I will definitely use if we have a third!) a mamaruga zensling - buckles and structure but so, so soft.

Google sling libraries in your area and go and try a few.

pinkstar01 · 04/02/2020 12:50

My only concern is how do I keep him warm in a sling? Yes I'll be in the car but I'll have to take him in as other DS is in reception

OP posts:
TeddyIsaHe · 04/02/2020 12:52

Your body heat keeps them warm. They don’t need a coat or anything. Hat on the for toasty heads, but honestly they’re lovely and cosy in the wrap.

DesLynamsMoustache · 04/02/2020 12:53

Don't worry about warmth. A sling is an extra layer (or two or more, depending on how it wraps) on its own, plus baby is pressed into you and sharing body heat. I found that I had to be more mindful about DD not overheating.

jeremypaxo · 04/02/2020 12:54

I loved my baby bjorn carriers. I had the special newborn one and then the regular one. DD was very happy in them and I found them easy to put on/do up solo.

INeedNewShoes · 04/02/2020 12:55

I bought some polar fleece waterproof booties from Jojo for DD but that was because we were doing long walks and sometimes out in the cold for a couple of hours. Generally they're perfectly warm and snuggly in a sling just in a sleepsuit with feet.

IvinghoeBeacon · 04/02/2020 12:57

I put the carrier on under my own coat so just wrap my coat around them if needed
