Best/easiest new born baby carrier?

pinkstar01 · 04/02/2020 11:17

I've got an almost 6 week old and need to put him in something for the school run, looking into baby bjorn but open to suggestions.
I just want him to be warm and comfortable as he's quite fussy!

Another option is getting the Doona car seat/stroller, what is the better option?

Baby Bjorn is fine - they have replaced it with an ergonomic one now.

I'd avoid any old models / second had though.

Hat mittens leg warmer (or older child’s socks work well)

I walk the school run often and love walking generally so invested in a mamalila baby wearing coat (it’s amazing)

My 7 week old lives in our Close Caboo. They keep warm enough being snuggled up next to you - the sling is three extra layers on their back anyway. I just pop a hat on, and some socks if we're out for a while. I've been out for an hour or more with him and he's been toasty when I get him out afterwards :) I actually don't know how people use them in summer because he gets so warm!

Carrier under coat. A coat that fit you for late pregnancy will do at least 6 months post birth or you can get a zip us in panel

www.zipusin.co.uk/product/short-standard-zip-panels-66cm/

I bought mine for my first, DH and I wore up to about 2 and has now done pregnancy and to 15 months for my (much bigger) 2nd. It's still in great condition.

I used mine on a variety of already owned coats - currently lives on a cheap Aldi ski jacket but spent the summer on a lightweight waterproof. Can switch between coats but we generally left it on "the babywearing coat" as we're similar enough in height/ build.

Okay thanks everyone, will try the sling under coat today and see how we go...feel like I'm a complete novice at this since last time with DS1 I didn't drive and no school runs!

“I actually don't know how people use them in summer because he gets so warm!”

My son was small during the long heatwave in 2018 and it was a challenge as he hated the pram, but he was my first so I didn’t have to be out with him at particular times. I used to do the supermarket shop (air conditioned!) and he would fall asleep in the carrier and I could sit in the cafe once the shopping was done, or would take him out for a walk in the early morning just to get out of the house. And around the house generally was ok most of the time as it wasn’t a warm house. It’s one of the reasons why I hired a woven carrier and then bought the connecta second hand, because it was cooler than the stretchy wrap which had several layers.

The Beco 360 works from newborn without the need for any adaptation. Very comfortable for baby and mum

DappledThings · 04/02/2020 16:09

Baby Bjorns may have improved so they are no longer quite as shit as they were but I've still yet to ever see a baby in one that wasnt way too low down. I'd still never trust one.

I'd also suggest a stretchy wrap for ease in this situation. You can have it tied and adjusted right and leave it on in the car so you can just pop baby in and out.

Even if you're waiting outside for a while you really don't need to worry about warmth unless it's really, really cold. I had my mum knit some old fashioned bottees for an extra layer on the feet in the sling

Selfsettling3 · 04/02/2020 16:16

New baby Bjorn are fine.

I used a close caboo but quickly moved to my manducca as I struggled to get the close caboo fasten properly. It was always started too high and then slipped a bit. I just couldn’t get it right enough.

IvinghoeBeacon · 04/02/2020 16:21

The newer baby bjorns are hip safe but I had a go with one at my local sling library and there were about a million buckles and it was very fiddly. This might be my incompetence, but I find other styles much easier

ThePenIsBlue · 04/02/2020 16:25

I had a Moby and hated the faff. Got a close caboo this time round and LOVE it. So easy to use and comfy for me and baby

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 04/02/2020 18:19

Ergo baby with newborn insert.

AuntieMaggie · 04/02/2020 18:32

I agree with going to a sling library - our local one gives advice/fitting if you have your own carrier for a small fee so maybe that's an option?

I tried the caboo but as baby was on the heavier side it was too bouncy and hurt my back so I'm now using a zensling which someone has already mentioned. Though to be honest I don't bother on the school run as its too much hassle and quicker/easier to stick the car seat on the pram frame plus baby is in a footmuff so stays warm/dry/asleep. If I'm going into the school for reading or something I'll use the sling.

HulaHoop2 · 04/02/2020 18:41

It’s not the easiest to get on and off but I recommend the Ergobaby 360 with a newborn insert. It will last for ages! We’re still using ours for our toddler.

Alternatively, get a stretchy wrap. I have the Ergobaby Aura which is great for keeping your newborn close and wearing them under your coat. It’s also very easy to tie once you get used to it. The only downside is that if you need to put it on while you’re out and about the fabric will inevitably trail along the ground as it’s like 5 metres long.

I recently found a no-tie, no-wrap carrier similar to the Baby K’tan but IMO way easier and better. It is essentially 3 loops of fabric stitched together so there’s no more wrestling with yards and yards of fabric. I’m sure something similar must exist in the UK!

MOR19 · 04/02/2020 18:54

We love the ergo baby 360. You can also buy carrier covers that fasten over the carrier for wet/cold weather which are fleece lined and shower proof.

HulaHoop2 · 04/02/2020 19:11

Yep we’ve got those too!

IvinghoeBeacon · 04/02/2020 19:54

Yes, you can get generic (non-branded) covers too which work well. I have an ergobaby one which works well

A lot of the more recent ergobabys don’t need a newborn insert as are suitable from birth

IvinghoeBeacon · 04/02/2020 19:54

Sorry, meant to say I have an ergobaby branded cover which was a present, but the generic ones do the same job
