Can anyone recommend any shampoo or product that helps an itchy scalp. My mums been complaining all week that her scalp is itching so much it’s really getting her down. She hasn’t changed anything what so ever. Just come out of nowhere and she doesn’t usually get eczema or anything like that. Think she is going to make a dr apt but can anyone recommend a shampoo that might calm the itch down?

There's so many to trial, but the pharmacy usually suggest tgel first. Personally Ive found head and shoulders itchy scalp helps keep it at bay.

Farontothemaddingcrowd · 02/02/2020 18:42

Is there any chance she's caught nits from a child?

blackcatlucky13 · 02/02/2020 18:43

Nits? I'd be checking v. carefully

Have you checked for nits?

If it's not nits then T-gel can be good. It stinks but soothes. I find if mine is very itchy (excema) not washing more than once a week, so I use a bit of dry shampoo, helps.

Lemonysherbet · 02/02/2020 18:43

There's also a little white bottle with a pink label called nizoram or something similar that works for me for a while. I sympathise with her, it drives me insane! Sometimes it can also be caused by not properly washing out shampoo or conditioner

Drum2018 · 02/02/2020 18:45

I agree check for nits first and foremost. After that it's trial and error regarding shampoos.

LesLavandes · 02/02/2020 18:51

If she has permanent hair colour, it won't be nits

Wintersnow39 · 02/02/2020 18:52

I was prescribed Nisoral by the doctor but it can be bought over the counter from most pharmacies.

KidCaneGoat · 02/02/2020 18:53

There’s an Aveeno oat one off amazon that’s good. Stopped my boy’s itchy head instantly

gamerchick · 02/02/2020 18:56

Have you checked for head lice firstly? Have to rule that out first.

FrenchBoule · 02/02/2020 18:57

Polytar, Neutrogena T-gel, Nizoral.

For the past few years I have become prone to a horribly itchy scalp, no nits or dandruff. Just horrible irritating itch! For me The Body Shop ginger shampoo works as well as T gel or similar but is not as harsh on the hair and much more pleasant to use. Worth a try.

Was coming on to recommend this shampoo too. It's pricey but so far I like it and has helped with itching lot, specially when actually shampooing with it (Was previously using the three clays one for greasy hair and would itch when using.).

HalfSizeMe · 02/02/2020 20:00

Tgel is brilliant

UniversallyUnchallenged · 02/02/2020 20:34

Also diet, some good fat (like extra virgin olive oil). Going through menopause did this to me, was the thing that remains after some of the other symptoms faded. Obviously doctors and hair treatment, to try to identify the cause. Olive oil, flax seeds, nuts, oily things... helped me. Actually rubbing the oil into scalp/body, having it in bath... also dry rubbing skin to get rid of the dead flaky stuff. Start tonight. Didn’t work immediately and is worse when cold, windy, wet

Hope she’s feeling less scratchy soon

Muddledupme · 02/02/2020 20:39

Capasol from the pharmacy smells like creosote but if you leave it on for a quarter of an hour it does the trick.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 02/02/2020 20:43

This is me😕dermatologist told me not to use Nizarol more than once every fortnight, as it is very drying. As are all the others to deal with itching. She told me to wash hair every day as this stood the scales building up ( l have sebhorric dermatitis) and when l do it makes a massive difference. But l can’t be arsed every day.

I have a steroid solution on prescription which works well for occasional use

Dowser · 02/02/2020 20:51

Demodex?
Does she have tiny little facial spites, itchy eye brows?

JenNtonic · 02/02/2020 21:06

Head and shoulders for itchy, flaky scalp- saved my Sanity after the very first use, smells lush and compared to T-Gel, it's a bargain 🙂 I have also used antihistamines when it's been really bad xx

There's no reason why it wouldn't be. I've known hair straighteners and dying the hair not kill them off, they are hardy little buggers.

Aid vote for a GP appointment as there are lots of scalp conditions and special shampoos. I’ve got a prescription for my third as the others didn’t sort my problem.

Haha I dyed my hair last week and caught bloody nits off dd3 Angry

Goneroundthetwist · 03/02/2020 03:47

Could be shingles, is there a small rash or blisters? Worth checking as it can affect the optic nerve.

Besidesthepoint · 03/02/2020 05:23

Try to change (or better yet:leave out) other hair products as well. Some hairsprays give me an itch.
