DS just signed “more”!

I have twins who are nearly 3.5 - both are autistic, non verbal, don’t understand words. DT2 has other disabilities as well. He is severely delayed across the board, doesn’t play with toys, constantly sensory seeking. He’s barely made any progress since he had a big skills regression nearly two years ago.

This weekend he’s been able to focus on play for a bit longer than usual. I was trying to get him to sign “more” yesterday while playing but he wasn’t really having it (DT1 has been signing more for about 8 months now, it’s the only sign he knows and uses it for everything).

He’s just finished his breadstick and run up to me with a big grin and signed more, clear as day! I can’t believe it. Now sobbing to myself and feeling hopeful about things.

Sorry - had to get that off my chest!

DesLynamsMoustache · 02/02/2020 16:20

That's brilliant!

I remember the first time DD did the milk sign. I felt so emotional, so I can't imagine how it must feel with all the additional challenges you've all faced. I hope he got another breadstick Grin

My friend has a little girl, about the same age. Regressing in speech but nobody knows why.
She has now learned a few signs. Her dad was in tears, as he had not seen her sign.
He could finally understand her
Well done twin 2

SinkGirl · 02/02/2020 16:21

It’s just so amazing to see little glimpses of him understanding more - we’ve had to do a lot recently that focuses on what they can’t do, where they struggle etc (assessments, EHCPs etc). I’ve been so worried that he will never progress because there’s been so little - I’m proud of every tiny thing but I worry so much about what their lives will be like.

They are such brilliant boys, they really are.

That’s lovely Smile

glitterbiscuits · 02/02/2020 16:25

Lovely! Well done.
What the next sign going to be?!

SinkGirl · 02/02/2020 16:28

Knowing these two, probably “food”. But DT1 has decided so far that “more” is sufficient for all situations (like when we stop in traffic, it means “more driving” 😂)

That’s fantastic!

MillicentMartha · 02/02/2020 16:39

How lovely! More is such a useful, multi-purpose word.

Have you tried choices boards with them? My DS would happily choose between crisps and biscuits for instance, if food is a motivator. Firstly I used actual small pieces of crisp or biscuit but could move on to PEC cards eventually.

DramaAlpaca · 02/02/2020 16:41

Aww, how lovely.

PenguinMama · 02/02/2020 16:41

Ah, what a great day! Fab news for you all Smile

SinkGirl · 02/02/2020 16:42

Yes, we used choices cards and now they have PECS folders but they may as well just have two cards - rice cakes and breadsticks, it’s all they use. DT2 is only interested in food!

Seeing glimmers of interest in toys and other play so that could open up a lot of things if it continues. Fingers crossed :)

It was DDs first sign too, 11am ish with the CM when she asked more what she crawled to the high chair, she wanted her lunch GrinGrinGrin still food centric as an adult.

AdaColeman · 02/02/2020 16:45

How fab! No wonder you were tearful. Thanks

ShowOfHands · 02/02/2020 16:45
