I'm going to Costco for the first time ever! If you're a regular - what are your best buys?

Well that's was an experience! I was only in there for an hour, I couldn't cope! There's SO MUCH STUFF!

I think it was much cheaper @PleasantVille, I'm going to work out by how much when I get home. I'll need to go back again soon, I'll have more of an idea where everything is next time!

Out of interest what exactly was cheaper, I go and want to find something cheaper but rarely do. I know it will depend where you normally shop and what you eat. I almost never buy branded products so just don't find anything.

SingingSands · 01/02/2020 18:01

We once had a roll of Costco tinfoil that lasted FIVE YEARS! Grin

Here's what we bought last week:

Loo roll
Kitchen roll
Washing powder
Cat food
Cat litter
Case of wine
Trousers for work (DH)

Costco is probably not cheaper than cheapest own branded supermarkets but the quality is usually very high.

I find the bin bags cheap for the quality, batteries, part baked ciabattas, cat food, toilet roll, cat litter, lavazza coffee, de-icer to be cheaper.

Halloumi is about the same as aldi and lidl but better quality.

We've had ours a year now and it's nowhere near running out! Grin

TheNestedIf · 01/02/2020 18:39

Wrong season, but make sure you get in there around October-ish. The Christmas wrapping paper lasts aeons and stands up to all sorts of sharp corners in the sort of way supermarket wrapping paper often doesn't.

Also:

Walking socks
Spiced Rum
Giant pretzels
Peanut Butter filled pretzels

BarbaraofSeville · 01/02/2020 18:39

I think a roll of Costco tin foil might outlast us, we don't use much foil and have barely made a dent in the roll we brought back from holiday about 18 months ago.

Shamazing · 01/02/2020 18:40

I bought the 5 year tin foil! Grin

Freeshavocado · 01/02/2020 18:44

Never thought of buying the tin foil it's going on my last for our next trip!!

Freeshavocado · 01/02/2020 18:45

And I agree it's not cheaper than supermarket own brand but it's much better quality imo.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 01/02/2020 19:06

I went today for the first time ever - happily I got a preview pass as I wasn't sure membership would be worthwhile for me / my micro business.

I found that there were quite a lot of things in there that were more expensive than the nearby Asda per 100g (eg frozen raspberries). Sugar was the same price as in the new Asda Deal Depot. Golden syrup is substantially cheaper, but only if you want to buy it in 7kg bottles!

By all means go, but do cross reference anything you might buy with the prices on your local supermarket's app!

In case you're wondering, I didn't take out a membership.

RogueV · 01/02/2020 19:07

Kirkland toilet roll
Kirkland kitchen roll
Cinnamon buns
Broccoli salad

PleasantVille · 01/02/2020 19:13

Hmm, so far

Cat related items - don't have a cat
Wine and spiced rum - not a big drinker and spiced rum is a very niche item surely
Trousers for DH - I'm single
Walking socks - probably something I might buy every few years
Foil - I don't use it very often - am I not doing something right?
Pretzels - don't like them
Christmas wrapping paper - in my house anything but the cheapest would be a waste on money as it goes under the tree for a short while then straight to the bin
Quality bin bags - again they go in the kitchen bin for a couple of days then the dustbin - I have never had an issue with Aldi bags, I don't know why I'd want them to be high quality
Washing powder - the supermarkets near me always have a big box on offer, I find Morrisons good for this

As I said I do want to get what everyone else raves about but I can't see it.

I know it's a matter of taste but my and DC all happily eat and enjoy a wide range of own brand food items. I don't buy the basic ranges, ordinary run of the mill tinned and packer goods, in fact when a buy big brand name of offer my DC always say they prefer the one we usually have.

Freeshavocado · 01/02/2020 19:13

It's a wholesaler so of course the good deals come on large quantities of products such as 40 loo rolls! It's not somewhere you can go for your weekly shop but once I got into the habit of going every 4-6 weeks it reduces the cost of my weekly shop because I'm not buying the things I've bought in bulk, you do need storage room though my downstairs bathroom is a mini Costco in itself. Having said that I think the membership is worth it for the chocolate brownies and bbq chicken pizza alone Grin

Standrewsschool · 01/02/2020 19:55

Regarding prices, I did a spot-check on porridge earlier today.

Porridge - branded porridge on offer, 2x1kg boxes for £3 in Tesco.

Costco - 2x 1.5kg for £4.??. Can’t remember exact price but it was under 50p difference, not a lot. However, Costco is always at that price, but Tesco’s don’t always have porridge on offer.

Auldspinster · 01/02/2020 20:46

The bin bags are amazing, really strong and massive.

Twospaniels · 01/02/2020 20:49

Fillet steak. Usually buy a fillet for about £90. Get hime and cut it up and freeze it. Soooo worth it.

Shamazing · 01/02/2020 20:53

I've worked out like for like for what I bought today v Tesco which is where I normally shop - I saved £40 today so I'm well chuffed. The one I went to only opened recently and is about 20 mins away so my plan is to go every 6 weeks or so. Smile

I may have three or four coats! I buy DD thick leggings from there too. We always have a look at the clothes, DH likes their work trousers and shirts, and the sports wear they do.

The garden plants they have are good quality too.

We live across the road from Costco.....we call it the '£100 Shop' as we pop in for milk and if we aren't careful we spend £100 on things we didn't know we needed Grin you do need to know prices though as it's not always cheaper than normal supermarkets.

I found that Makro do better deals on loo roll. Thankfully we have both Costco & Makro locally.
We love the frozen section in Costco. The Yakisoba and packs of Gyozas are fantastic. The strawberries are great too.
