DH who regularly flirts with food poisoning says look at the inside of the tin first. Pineapple is acid, so if it has eaten away some of the inside of the tin, probably not.

Unless the tin looks blown, open it and have a look/sniff. I found a tin of cherry pie filling in my DM's pantry that was 4 years out of date. I used that, because she was going to throw it away, and it was absolutely fine.

In the apocalypse yes, if I have fresher stuff available no. I would keep it for the apocalypse, you won’t have to wait long.

Absolutely, esp as you are cooking it. Assuming the tin isnt rusted through and it looks/tastes normal, I'd go for it.

Probably not.

Cans nowadays have a coating on the inside to prevent acidic foods from corroding the metal, but this coating is itself liable to some degradation in an acidic environment.

I'd eat some tinned foods some time after their 'best before date' but probably not pineapple after 4 years. DH was a technical expert in the food and drink packaging industry for a while and would have got rid of it anyway before then.Grin

Botulism, or more accurately the byproducts of botulism that kill you, isn't destroyed by cooking. Have fun. Hmm

I've posted about this before but the real litmus test for me with out of date food is... can I afford to be ill in the next few days? Do I have any important events, work commitments, etc coming up?

If a few days of having the galloping trots won't be a massive issue, I take the chance and eat it.

Haven't been ill from out of date/left out on the side/not in the fridge food yet!

Because there's almost certainly nothing wrong with it and it's wasteful of the planet's resources to bin good food.

Syrup should be less corrosive than juice.
Even if the lining had started to degrade, I don't think it's the sort of thing that would make you poorly immediately.
