How old is your Dualit?

Just musing over a cuppa in the kitchen and I've calculated that our Dualit toaster, kettle and scales are at least 16 years old. Anyone beat that?

Its about 17, but its in the shed for bad behaviour. The timing switch broke and the toast caught fire and it broke an element. Filled the kitchen with smoke. DH wants to repair it. I dont.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/02/2020 13:26

We only bought ours this year but I'm hoping they'll last as long as some of the examples here. I'm sick of replacing kettles and toasters as they never seem to last.

Contrast to our Hotpoint fridge which is around 22 years old.

SparePantsAndLego · 01/02/2020 13:32

Our toaster is 13 years old! I love the fact that I know I’ll be able to buy replacement parts and fix it myself if anything goes wrong.
I wish more household items were as durable and ‘fixable’.

TechnicalSergeantGarp · 01/02/2020 13:32

I've had my four slice metal toaster for 15 years, I bought it witch wedding vouchers. I need to look into getting an element repair.

I polish it with silvo a few times a year and it looks in really good condition.

ExpletiveDelighted · 01/02/2020 13:35

Our toaster is about 15 years old and as good as new.

user1498572889 · 01/02/2020 13:36

15 years for my toaster. Dualities make 2 types of toaster. The cheaper one cannot be repaired easily.

TheCrowFromBelow · 01/02/2020 14:17

My Russell Hobbs £19 toaster was nearly 14 years old but i knocked a plastic measuring cup on top of it and it melted inside.
I was pleased to have noticed this before I burned down the house but sad about my toaster.
I appreciate that as a non Dualit, my RH is abit of a threadcrasher though.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 01/02/2020 14:17

I felt very extravagant when I bought ours, but they last forever don't they!?

Sadly not, we are on our second, both were the big four slice stainless steel version. They discolour badly too so don't keep their lovely shine for long.

My Magimix, on the other hand, is about 35 years old, and my old inherited Kenwood chef getting on for 50. And as for the sewing machine...

BestIsWest · 01/02/2020 14:19

Ours were bought in Comet so at least 10 years. Still going strong. DH had to replace a part in the toaster a while back.

BestIsWest · 01/02/2020 14:22

Our Kenwood Chef is 33 this year - DD has it now, we bought a new one last year and I don’t think it will last as long.

HaudMaDug · 01/02/2020 14:24

4 slice toaster 25 years still going but recently one element seems to be failing. Has toasted almost every day since I bought it. Cant beat Dualit toast.
Kettle bought at the same time burnt out a couple of years ago and I replaced it with a DeLongi but its on its last legs already.
Food processor has not been used for about 10 years so I've no idea if it still works or not.

SorrelForbes · 01/02/2020 14:24

ChateauMyself Vimes' theory... Grin

We bought our 4 slice Dualit toaster on eBay about 8 years ago so I'm not sure how old it is. DH occasionally gives it a clean and buff up with some metal polish which brings it up a treat. They make the best toast!

TheFlis12345 · 01/02/2020 14:25

My PIL’s 4 slot Dualit is at least 28 years old. They can’t remember exactly when they bought it but DH was still at primary school!

Gilead · 01/02/2020 14:55

Mine’s around eight to ten years old. Tis a thing of beauty.

Takeittotheboss · 01/02/2020 15:03

I received mine as a gift when I left my first job after university, so approximately 33 years ago! I have fitted new grill sides a couple of times, but otherwise it has always worked perfectly.
Can't imagine replacing it ever.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 01/02/2020 15:04

We also had a Dualit kettle, didn't last very long at all. We're currently using a perfectly acceptable Asda variable temperature one with a keep hot function that cost half the price.

exexpat · 01/02/2020 15:09

Has anyone tried getting a Dualit kettle repaired? Mine is at least 10 years old, works perfectly but someone dropped it a few years ago and snapped part of the hinge connecting the lid to the body. It's still useable but slightly annoying having to fit it back in place all the time. I wouldn't want to replace the whole kettle yet, but it would be nice to have it fixed.

AdaColeman · 01/02/2020 15:12

My toaster is still going strong after about 28 years, but my kettle gave up the ghost after 25 years of service.

TattiePants · 01/02/2020 16:00

One coffee machine is 14.5 years as we used wedding vouchers to buy it (even though I don't drink coffee). The kettle and other coffee machine must be 16+ years. No idea why I didn't buy a toaster at the time.

AvocadoAdvocate · 01/02/2020 16:47

It's amazing that so many are still going 25/30 years + later. Some of you need to think about who you're going to leave your toasters to in your will!

It seems Dualit are one of the few brands that make appliances to last unlike the built-in obsolescence built in to some other brands. Another appliance still going strong is my Brother sewing machine which is the same age as me - 57. My dad bought it the year I was born.

I decided to clean my toaster today, after all this toaster talk - took it outside to give it a shake upside down and the label on the bottom indicates it was manufactured in 2003, so 17 years old this year.

14 years, the toaster was dropped from a great height when we moved 10 years ago and broke so it was sent off to dualit to repair - their customer service is great - and came back as good as new.
We also got a replacement lid for our kettle at the same time (someone put it on the hot hob and melted the knob).

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 01/02/2020 17:05

mine is probably about 15 years old....the timer switch doesn't count down though, and I keep meaning to get it fixed, but in the meantime an ABSOLUTE BAN on leaving the kitchen if you are making toast has served us well.

rslsys · 01/02/2020 17:05

We bought our Dualit toaster 26 years ago when we moved to this house. We're on our second Dualit kettle though, as I dropped the first one, bent the spout and made it a very random pourer.
The first Dualit kettle was bought to replace our Russell Hobbs kettle which we were given as a Wedding Present - we've been married 40 years as of last September.

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 02/02/2020 23:48

Dualit is at least 20 years old. My Mum bought it and was cross when I asked to swap a 2 slice to a 4 slice - it’s lasted long enough that it was worth the swap!

I bought the kettle when Mum died and her kettle sparked at me that evening, went out and bought what she had said she wanted even though I knew she’d never use it, so the kettle is 16 years old.

My scales are electronic and a 21st birthday present, they are older than the toaster by a generous handful of years!

All are still working well and I’m still pleased with them and hope they last a good while longer!

erinlaree · 24/04/2020 01:02

I collect vintage housewares and found an old Dualit toaster at an estate sale. I can’t seem to find any information about this specific model online. Does anyone have a model CTS2W/DOM and know how old theirs is?
