Little purchases that would make life easier

Just contemplating the mental list of small things (less that £5) I need to buy that if I actually got round to buying would make life a lot easier

  • white board pen (I have a little board in the kitchen to write shopping lists on etc but the pen has run out so I never use it and forget what I’ve run out of)
  • more socks for the children so I don’t have to scrabble together two odd socks in different sizes
  • more child sized cutlery because for some reason we only have 2 forks and a knife which are always in the dish washer
  • better bin bags, accidentally bought shit ones last month and have been living with the consequences ever since

Anyone else have small purchases they just need to amazon prime so they can get on with their lives

Phone charger with longer wire

The wire bit of a charger to match the plug I have

Big metal tablespoon for cooking/serving small stuff

AlCalavicci · 31/01/2020 10:53

I agree with decent bin bags ,
Also thicker tinfoil
Longer phone charge cables
Pre pay for bus / train tickets to save scrabbling for change ( it will prob cost more than a fiver but save money in the long run )

A bloody garlic press I keep forgetting to pick up when out and about Hmm

A soap dish in the bathroom as I like tea soap as opposed to shower gel. It goes all gooey and leaves slime trails on the edge of the shower unit

Today I feel that ear plugs would change my life, so that I can't hear dd screeching at me every two mins for a new activity or more snacks or something else! But I am full of a cold with a banging head!

BarbaraofSeville · 31/01/2020 11:31

Ikea scissors - the packs of three for about a quid. As many as you need to keep a pair in a drawer in every room of the house so you can always find scissors when you need them.

LuvMyBoyz · 31/01/2020 11:34

I made life easier buy buying whole sets of the toiletries that I use frequently. A set for my swimming bag, a set for the gym and another for my weekend bag. No swapping over...brilliant.

Sparklfairy · 31/01/2020 11:34

Tongs. I never used them growing up but now I've seen others use them while cooking I NEED themGrin

wantingahome · 31/01/2020 11:37

Oven gloves! I've just always used a tea towel but burnt myself more times that I can count

TwoZeroTwoZero · 31/01/2020 11:42

A zip for my coat pocket. Mine's broken and my hand keeps catching on it. If I bought a new zip though, I'd also need to learn how to sew it on!

AmelieTaylor · 31/01/2020 11:43

It was about £10 but an Any Sharps blade sharpener (recommenced on another thread) I have lovely sharp knives now and it’s SO easy to use). It’s ended up being expensive though as they’re so good I’ve bought a few for family/friends 🤣

AmelieTaylor · 31/01/2020 11:45

Definitely longer/more charger cables (again more than £5 as I only buy good quality ones as a safety precaution)

(Admit it’s probably pointless as quite possibly they come out if the same factory, but 🤷🏻‍♀️)

A few rolls of sellotape dotted around in kitchen, living room and my bedroom.
It seems to disappear.
A laundry bin for each of my two DC's rooms.
A biscuit tin.

AQuickNameChange1 · 31/01/2020 14:44

I've already done the scissors from Ikea thing. I highly recommend.

A 2nd pair of plimsoles. Then I can have 2 full PE kits packed and ready each week.

MT2017 · 31/01/2020 18:37

More than a fiver but completely life changing...

Little purchases that would make life easier
AtleastitsnotMonday · 31/01/2020 20:37

A new tin opener. Mines rubbish so removing the lid now takes a good 5 mins of hacking.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 31/01/2020 20:39

Also a supply of birthday and other cards. I’m way too last minute.

KitKatBox · 31/01/2020 20:41

Agree with cables and an Anker four USB charger plug (more than a fiver).

Also white tower extension leads with a USB charger plug that has a lead at all times.

I buy the simple human bags that fit my bins. They have never split. Worth the cost imo.

BikeRunSki · 31/01/2020 20:48

A battery operated pencil sharpener. There is never a sharp pencil in this house!!

Loads of barrettes

Soap dish

OopsUpsideYourBed · 31/01/2020 20:57

I second a battery operated pencil sharpener. Also a good cello tape dispenser - life changing at Xmas.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/01/2020 21:00

Extra school jumpers for ds (£2 each from Asda)

A new hot water bottle. Mine has started to melt from the inside out. Its gonna blow any day.

buckeejit · 31/01/2020 21:23

I've bought all the necessary birthday cards for the year & put them in wallets for each month with post it's of dates needed. It's great!

Thanks - I have now added another charger to my basket as I end up running round the house to stick it in for a bit. Will also add one to my existing travel toiletries bag.

My mini first aid kit in the car has come in handy often. I also have a travel one where I've decanted calpol/neurofen/piriton etc into little pill bottles - easier time remember when it's all already together.

Agree on cheap bin bags being shit!

AngelOfDeathNix · 31/01/2020 21:44

A different cheese grater, one of the ones that you turn the handle of having watched my left handed daughter nearly grate her fingers again using a box grater!

WellTidy · 31/01/2020 21:48

Hand cream for the car. And for my handbag.

Sunshine1235 · 31/01/2020 22:07

Thanks for all your suggestions. Starting this thread convinced me to throw caution to the wind and I ordered a lovely set of whiteboard markers for the bargain prices of £2.55 (down from £7.55) - we know how to celebrate payday in this house

Cheese grater is another one for us. The handle fell off ours years ago and it’s mildly painful holding the base while grating cheese. I actually put a new one in the trolley in ikea about 2 years ago but DH made me take it out because apparently ours is fine Angry

@Sunshine1235
Make dh grate all your cheese in future, I am sure you will have a nice shiny new grater soon Wink
