Do you want to see a picture of Angua and Cheery from the BBC new Pratchett adaptation?

The program is called The Watch, from what I understand it’s a distillation of the watch novels. The blonde actor is Angua, the dark haired one is Cheery. I’m trying to wrap my head around the casting choice for Cheery, who in the books is spoiler alert a female dwarf who due to all dwarfs having beards is assumed to be male by her colleagues.

Oh thank Glod Rhianna has no control over this!!!!

SaskiaRembrandt · 31/01/2020 10:40

Oh hell no, Bark! Or anything to do with Granny Weatherwax.

Hell, no! If they did something similar to the witches I'd be channeling my inner Granny Weatherwax in my complaints. There would be headology.

AlunWynsKnee · 31/01/2020 10:42

Lady Sybil is a younger Geraldine James in my head. Pretty much the character she played in Blott on the Landscape years ago.
Apart from Carrot nobody looks even vaguely right.
I won't watch it but then I never watch any of the TP books on screen. I like the way it looks in my head.

JellySlice · 31/01/2020 10:59

TP wrote strong, intelligent, female characters who don’t conform to stereotypes. Angua, Cheery, Lady Sybil, Susan, Granny Weatherwax et all.

Yes!

(And Charles Dance is now my definitive Vetinari. I've never seen any TP adaptations, but the moment I read the PPs mentioning CD as HV - that was it!)

LivingDeadGirlUK · 31/01/2020 11:05

I wonder how they would butcher Equal Rites.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 31/01/2020 12:13

The very best Vetinari is Guy Henry playing Henrik Hansen in Holby City. A so-so medicated soap, and in the middle of it a man who makes Machiavelli look like Simple Jack.

BillywigSting · 31/01/2020 12:16

Good grief. Just no.

That's not Angua and that's DEFINITELY not Cheery. Where is her beard and axe with pink glitter on?

They've made a right pig's ear of that casting. Wtf were they thinking?

FenellaVelour · 31/01/2020 12:54

The more I’ve looked into this, the more the whole thing looks like an absolute car crash. Who’s their audience? It’s not Pratchett fans, that’s for sure.

BarkandCheese · 31/01/2020 14:01

Who’s their audience is a good question indeed.

Angua is a female werewolf in the books! That's a bloke!

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 31/01/2020 14:50

Now I've re read the op I realise blonde one is angua which still doesn't work but the one on the right is definitely played by a man Cheery is short and female.

Twenty2 · 31/01/2020 15:03

It's a fucking travesty. I'm gutted Sad

Whattheother2catsprefer · 31/01/2020 15:04

Oh dear what have they done? That is so many shades of nope in one picture.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 31/01/2020 15:24

Why couldn't Susan Calman play Cheery? She would be amazing!
I can't even.... for the rest of this shit. What are they DOING? Just no!

SaskiaRembrandt · 31/01/2020 15:32

Wait! What? Cheery is the one on the right?

BarkandCheese · 31/01/2020 15:35

Yep, Cheery is one on the right. She’s apparently now a non binary outcast and no longer a female dwarf.

SoupDragon · 31/01/2020 15:40

WTF have they done?! How could they butcher it so badly??

The very best Vetinari is Guy Henry playing Henrik Hansen in Holby City.

Yes!

JellySlice · 31/01/2020 15:46

But female dwarves are non-binary! That was Cheery's problem - she wanted to embrace the binary.

SoupDragon · 31/01/2020 15:55

Female dwarves are also short and bearded though. And female.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 31/01/2020 16:04

I hate it when people try to adapt good books to add their 'interesting' twist. They're not Sir Terry, they never will be and someone should lock them up without access to Instagram or Tumblr and a full collection of his books until they see the error of their ways.

JellySlice · 31/01/2020 16:15

Exactly, Soupdragon. And a handsome, shaven-cheeked, male human just does not cut the mustard, no matter how long his hair.

SoupDragon · 31/01/2020 16:22

And I'm sure Anna Chanceller as Vetinari will be brilliant. But Vetinari is a man.

And Sybil is sturdily built.

SoupDragon · 31/01/2020 16:23

Carrot looks fine though. Assuming he will be ginger.

4GreenApples · 31/01/2020 16:29

If Cheery is no longer a female dwarf, then they should give the character a completely different name.

Then we wouldn’t be expecting to see a short bearded dwarf with a glittery axe Crown Angry

SaskiaRembrandt · 31/01/2020 16:52

Oh, I assumed Cheery was the one on the left, what with her being the smaller of the two. Cheery being the one on the right is even worse. Although, Angua being the one on the left is pretty bad too; that is not at all how I imagined Angua to look. I've always thought of her as taller, and scarier.
