Did your school have a metal climbing frame in the gym hall? What did you call it?

In the depths of Glasgow, we had a Kelvin frame and I presumed this was a universal term... DH is claiming that it is not and Google isn't backing me up.

It's like the dinner school debate all over again Grin

I went to two primaries - one in London and one in Cheshire.

I'm sure we called them The Bars in one and the Apparatus in the other but I can't remember which way round.

Blackbear - still playtime here, 15 min morning and afternoon, longer for reception. Plus a long playtime at lunch as well.

Aragog · 31/01/2020 09:45

Ours is very much like overnightangel has posted, but we have some wooden and better bars, beams and ramps to attach to it too. No ropes. We have a monkey bar attachment as part of it as well.

Maybe Kelvin is a modern compnay name for it? Your tweet is relatively recent. I was at primary school in the 70's!

fedup21 · 31/01/2020 09:48

Ours was the big apparatus/Wall bars.

Clearly a few people also called it Kelvin-wonder where that came from?! Was it the make?

At my primary, the teachers used to call the white PVA the Melvin! Where did that come from?!

Damntheman · 31/01/2020 09:52

Wall bars, SW :)

DecemberSnow · 31/01/2020 09:54

Apparatus - London

Ivysaurus · 31/01/2020 10:00

Monkey bars? The ones that are like a horizontal ladder

inwood · 31/01/2020 10:02

Apparatus - my kids go to my old primary and it's still there, but they don't use it anymore. This it's just too much hassle to remove it.

MsPavlichenko · 31/01/2020 10:02

As I said Kelvin frame in Glasgow. 1970 onwards for me.

Cardboard33 · 31/01/2020 10:05

Derbyshire, mid 90s - it was wooden and called the "A frame" ... Apparatus was smaller stuff like benches and vaults. I only recall using it once or twice though during primary school whereas we had separate ropes, climbing ladders etc that we used a lot.

amusedbush · 31/01/2020 10:13

The apparatus - central Scotland, I was at primary school 1995-2002.

We all lost our shit when it was brought out Grin

Sweetpea84 · 31/01/2020 10:15

Apparatus

Moondancer73 · 31/01/2020 10:16

The bars - up the wall in the school hall

Toddlerteaplease · 31/01/2020 11:35

The apparatus. It was so exciting seeing it all set out in the hall when we went in. Music and Movement was so boring!

Toddlerteaplease · 31/01/2020 11:37

East Midlands, mid 80's

Rowgtfc72 · 31/01/2020 17:30

Apparatus. Late 70's, early 80,s Lincolnshire. I was one of the best (if not the best) rope climbers in the school. May explain my arthritis.....

PaisleyPathlete · 02/12/2022 20:17

Distinctly recall it being referred to as the Kelvin Appratus - Google search led me to your query. Grew up in Renfrewshire.

GoodVibesHere · 02/12/2022 21:10

Apparatus and I HATED it. That and the bloody horse.

vinoandbrie · 02/12/2022 21:12

‘The apparatus’. I found it very exciting when we had PE on it, but I couldn’t climb up the rope!

XenoBitch · 02/12/2022 21:12

Climbing frame. 80s in SW

hels71 · 02/12/2022 21:35

Definitely the apparatus (70s primary). The children in the school I currently work in refer to it as "big blue".

Toddlerteaplease · 02/12/2022 22:05

Apparatus, so exciting when we got to use it!

Thursa · 02/12/2022 22:12

I’m sure it was just “the bars”. Oh, the horror of going into the gym and seeing “the ropes” were out too. I’ve never had upper body strength…
