Did your school have a metal climbing frame in the gym hall? What did you call it?

In the depths of Glasgow, we had a Kelvin frame and I presumed this was a universal term... DH is claiming that it is not and Google isn't backing me up.

It's like the dinner school debate all over again Grin

Apparatus! 70s/80s. And we had a fancy dome-shaped metal climbing frame outside that I thought was called the jeerdo but it must have been the geodome.

MoonlightMistletoe · 30/01/2020 22:49

The apparatus - south east London.

Apparatus here too.

Makes me want to dig out my Tupperware lunch box - the orange one with the road signs on the bottom.

CheshireMax · 30/01/2020 22:54

I would have said climbing frame at first but seeing this thread made me realise it wsd definitely apparatus. A big metal climbing frame opened out X shape.

South Manchester, mid-80s

DilysMoon · 30/01/2020 22:55

The apparatus in NW too Grin ah fond memories.

TitchyP · 30/01/2020 22:58

The Apparatus. (South east) Exactly like the photos already posted.
Every week we hoped...but quite a rare occurrence from what I remember.

GaraMedouar · 30/01/2020 23:02

The bars

PorpentinaScamander · 30/01/2020 23:03

I can't remember but I think "the bars".

We had "apparatus" in the playground though. A wooden 'house' that we used to hang upside down from so our skirts fell up and everyone could see our knickers Grin. There was a strictly enforced rota for which year could use them on any given day. If it was your turn then taunting the others was fully allowed by singing "year [whatever] on the apparatus" over and over again.

South East. Late 80s/early 90s

converseandjeans · 30/01/2020 23:24

The apparatus - 1980s Midlands. We wore vest & pants back in those days - no PE kit!

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 30/01/2020 23:28

Apparatus. And it was out and being used all the time. We were an army school though. Maybe that had something to do with it. Best PE lesson when the apparatus was out.

RainbowMum11 · 30/01/2020 23:28

Ours was the Sherwood!!

hibiscuswater · 30/01/2020 23:29

Indoors it's the apparatus, outdoors it's a climbing frame

overnightangel · 30/01/2020 23:32

Pretty much like this, pulled out from the wall
“The Apparatus”

Black “galloshers” were mandatory footwear

Definitely the apparatus here in london
Only struck me recently how odd that is !

ThingDoer · 30/01/2020 23:45

South side of Glasgow 70s and 80s and think it was just the bars and ropes. Very rare to come out.

I also went to dinner school. My dh and dc think this is hilarious.

BodenGate · 30/01/2020 23:53

Big apparatus

Wheresthebiffer2 · 30/01/2020 23:55

boo, we didn't have this. (tiny rural primary school). We only had two classrooms, and one had to be used for lunches. no gym hall. but we did have "the field" and it was our treat to be allowed to play there, rather than confined to the tarmac playground.

PointlessUsername · 30/01/2020 23:59

The apparatus 90's London but ours were wooden.

Llareggub · 31/01/2020 00:01

Definitely apparatus, Wales, early 80s. It was made out of blue metal and I think we used it quite a bit. My son’s school has one and funnily enough I asked him what it was called the other day and he said he had no idea. I don’t think it’s used.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 31/01/2020 00:05

Oh I forgot about these! We had one
, no idea what we called it. Its still there (I'm in the school a lot because my kids go there now) Don't think we ever used it though.

MintyMabel · 31/01/2020 00:08

North of Scotland it was the apparatus. The joy on entering the gym hall and seeing it is difficult to match. I love seeing DD’s reaction when we go to school in the morning and it’s out for PE. Takes me right back.

AgentProvocateur · 31/01/2020 00:09

From Glasgow. Apparatus and dinner school. And jannie. (Was at primary in the ‘70s).

PickAChew · 31/01/2020 00:09

We had monkey bars.
