What 'vintage' clothes do you have?

As in not expensive pieces but things from Primark - and even C&A, New Look etc, that you paid peanuts for and have lasted forever.

I got rid of some old C&A stuff last year when I had a clear out but I have 2 towelling, knee length, hooded robes bought in Sheffield in the latish 90s. One blue, one white. The white one stays in my guest room (and my sister uses it half a dozen times a year) but I have used the blue one daily every spring and autumn for over 20 years now. It's a bit faded but still perfectly serviceable. Also random PJs over the last 20 years that I still wear but nothing else as old that is still in regular use.

Can you beat it? Grin

I have a black ribbed polo neck that is 31yrs old from Warehouse. Bought it as a teen. Its a bit tight now but OK under a pinfore.

SingingSands · 29/01/2020 22:58

A velvet blazer my mum bought as a teenager in the 70s.

Levi's denim jacket I bought as a teenager in 1996.

Several Topshop dresses bought in the late 90s. One is very Victoria Beckham in style (I used to wonder if she'd bought that dress herself and based her designs on it) and I used to look killer when I wore it back in my skinny heyday. Sigh.

A gorgeous Topshop fitted cropped jacket, design "inspired by" Marc Jacobs. Again, it looked great back when I was skinny enough to slink about in it, especially with the black VB style dress.

Some band T-shirts - Reef, Oasis, Blur, Charlatans.

All still in my wardrobe. Apart from the Levi's denim jacket (which I wear every summer) I'll never wear the others, but I'll never throw them out - they're like old friends, packed with memories Grin

I have a black faux fur coat that belonged to my grandmother from the 1930's. None of my girls want it but my daughter in law loves it. When she was here at Christmas time she went home with the jacket I wore to the school ball in 1976 and looked stunning in it.

DelurkingAJ · 29/01/2020 23:05

My jeans from the late 90s are back out now that high waists are in and appear to be much better quality than the stretch ones you are forced to buy now. I have a couple of jumpers I bought at 16 (1996) that I still wear regularly.

And a dress that my DM and I refer to as ‘the dress’...DM bought it in 1987 to wear to a black tie do at my school. I cried in the shop. DM admitted many years later that I’d be right as a couple of the not so charming Dads at the even then propositioned her (she was not in any way single). It’s a gorgeous dress.

TheFaerieQueene · 29/01/2020 23:08

I bought a 1970’s dress from Etsy last year. It is long and flowing/elegant. I channeled my inner Margot when I wore it. I’m looking for another opportunity to wear it again.

Ohjustboreoff · 29/01/2020 23:25

I have a brown leather jacket my mum bought and wore before I was born (until I ruined her figure!) so 1970/71. I wear it now with a plain white tshirt and skinny jeans. I love it!

Strokethefurrywall · 29/01/2020 23:49

I think the oldest items I own and still wear is a mini denim skirt and fitted cap sleeved button down shirt with mini pictures of The Fonz which I bought in Topshop when I was 22.

I'm now 40 and they're still amazing!

A beautiful light apricot coloured lined linen skirt bought from Next in the mid 80s. Lovely tailoring, nothing like today's mass produced clothing.

FramboiseRoyale · 30/01/2020 00:29

I have several pieces of clothing/accessories that were my mother's that I wear. The oldest is a minaudiere from the 1960s.

MrsMoastyToasty · 30/01/2020 00:35

I don't have any clothes older than about 10 years old but I do have duvet covers that must be nearly 30 years old and are used regularly.

ColourMyDreams · 30/01/2020 00:49

I still have a lot of my clothes from the 80s, a few pieces of which I still wear now and again.
I got a pair of slouch socks that I bought to keep my feet warm when I was pregnant with my first born, 36 years ago. I still wear them in the winter and they're still going strong.
I also have my grandmother's fur coat which my grandfather bought her just after they married in 1926.
I would never wear it, but it's very sentimental to me.

80sMum · 30/01/2020 01:14

I have quite a few clothes that are over 20 years old. My swimsuit, for example, was bought in 1987 (I can't swim, so hardly ever use it though!).
The coat/anorak I was wearing at the weekend was bought in 1996.
I have a couple of t-shirts from 1989.

I also still have my "going away outfit" that I bought in Laura Ashley in 1978. I can only just about fit into it, providing I don't need to breathe! It's size 10. I'm now size 8 but several inches bigger than I was then. It's probably equivalent to a size 4/6 nowadays!

Downunderduchess · 30/01/2020 07:22

I still have two velvet & tapestry hippie style bags I had in high school. I’m 53. I don’t use them now but I’ll never get rid of them. Also a few other good handbags from my early 20’s. I do occasionally use them.

SinkGirl · 30/01/2020 07:29

Anything from the 20th century is now considered vintage... depressing thought.

I suspect DH has some pants that would beat your record OP 😬

vampirethriller · 30/01/2020 07:32

My summer dressing gown was bought in 1960 something by my gran and is still going strong
I've got a black bodice from top shop, 1999, that I don't fit since having a baby but refuse to give away.

okiedokieme · 30/01/2020 07:55

I have a c&a jumper and several bits from bhs all bought in the 90's

Ragwort · 30/01/2020 08:55

My 'best shoes' are from my 40th birthdays (I am now over 60j.

I still wear the silk dressing gown I bought for my honeymoon - married 31 years - it is a bit tight Grin.

I have a lovely Monsoon dress that I bought in the late 80s, I've only ever worn it once but I love it so much I think I will one day lose enough weight to wear it again.

I never buy new clothes, I have loads from before I had my DS (now 18).

fussychica · 30/01/2020 08:58

When pregnant in 1992 wore a smock that my mum had worn when she had me in 1956. Still have it as a keepsake but obviously don't wear itGrin
DH has a 1984 C&A t shirt which is in perfect condition but he only wears for gardening.
I still occasionally wear my 1979 Jane Norman chiffon top that was the top half of my evening wedding outfitShock.

Cocolapew · 30/01/2020 09:01

I have Prince tour tshirts from around 30 yesrs ago.
Also a cardigan from Chelsea Girl. It's a dark reddy/plum colour with a darker red velvet trim. It doesn't fit me but I can't bring myself to get rid of it Hmm

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 30/01/2020 09:01

Dd wears a black Adidas t-shirt that I wore as a teen in the 90’s. It’s still black and looks great. I wore it loads she wears it loads. Definitely had my money’s worth out of that.

balonzz · 30/01/2020 09:06

I still have a coat that my mum used to wear in the 60's. I have worn it a couple of times and it doesn't look too dated.

balonzz · 30/01/2020 09:07

Don't you find that clothes from years ago are often made better: better fabric and better tailored, even the cheaper things?

Ikora · 30/01/2020 09:09

I have a black dress similar to the one posted in the photo above I bought it 25 years ago, it has some Lycra and is forgiving. I have a black backless evening dress that has a while collar that I also bought around the same time. I had a lovely pink satin dress that was 15 years old that I got rid of recently, it still fitted but just didn’t look good on me anymore.

goldenorbspider · 30/01/2020 09:24

Yes fast fashion isn't built to last, done on purpose. Cheap to make, needs replacing. Look at boohoo/ply/misspap ext all the clothes are soo poorly made, they're see through

turkeyboots · 30/01/2020 09:31

I have a black ankle length satin skirt from Dorothy Perkins from 1995. Still occasionally wear it, thankfully it has an elasticated waist!
