Lardlizard · 29/01/2020 07:54

How many more times dangerous than travelling in the roads I wonder ? Or is it like flying safter than road travel ?

TheFaerieQueene · 29/01/2020 08:58

I’ve had a number of lessons flying a helicopter and loved them.

Titsywoo · 29/01/2020 08:59

Tin can with a fan on top. Id never get in one. Dh took ds in one knowing how I feel about them and i lost my shit big time.

coconuttelegraph · 29/01/2020 09:04

A boy I knew at school lost his dad in a helicopter crash when we were teens, he was an experienced pilot. I'd never get in one

In the past couple of weeks alone there have been 3 fatal road accidents on roads I regularly drive on, no one would stop driving on those roads because of that. Without proper statistics you aren't making a risk based choice. I'm not saying that one method of transport is safer than the other, I don't know the answer but your reasoning isn't logical

Spam88 · 29/01/2020 09:10

I assume they're pretty dangerous. My DH used to work offshore and it was his companies policy not to get people off by helicopter unless it was an absolute emergency and there was no other option (although maybe this was a cost-saving measure 🤔) and of course no one was allowed in a helicopter without having completed underwater escape training (which sounds horrendous but my DH thinks is great fun - I suppose that's why he worked at sea and I work in an office 😂).

cologne4711 Penzance Heliport is returning! penzanceheliport.co.uk/

I’ve travelled in helicopters many times as MIL lives on the Isles of Scilly. It always felt safer than the other option (tiny prop plane) but probably the reverse is actually true.

KittenVsBox · 29/01/2020 09:34

Not sure how accurate this data is, but makes for interesting reading here

Private planes and driving is much more dangerous, non scheduled planes are equally risky as helicopters. I suspect part of that is the routes helicopters and non scheduled planes rake when compared to scheduled routes.

And, those stats cover equal distances - you would spend much longer in a car to travel 1000 miles than you would in a faster mode if transport.

Patroclus · 29/01/2020 11:07

They're weird to fly in that the 'go forward' command is also the 'go down' one. I reckon the higher up you are the better.

Patroclus · 29/01/2020 11:09

The death rates for pilots of small planes are horrendous as well.

ItIsAllChange · 29/01/2020 11:21

If an aviation company, whether it be helicopter or airline, ask you to do something in an emergency situation, there is good reason to suggest it would be an action that would help your survival chances.

I think that a lot of humans will by nature look at someone who is calmly taking charge in an emergency situation and tend to be very obedient. That level of authority in such situations helps avoid panic and then people will follow others. Standing patiently on the wings of a plane waiting for rescue sounds ridiculous but compared to the claustrophobia of the inside of a crashed plane is much more appealing.

It is if you're famous or ''know too much''

Shock
sirfredfredgeorge · 29/01/2020 11:37

Private planes and driving is much more dangerous

No it's not, this is a fallacy of those stats, especially in the US, where large numbers of the deaths are drunk or dangerous drivers killing themselves, given that you are a passenger in a vehicle, the equivalent statistic would be risk of death in a bus/limo/taxi with the professional driver, not the overall death rate from all cars.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/01/2020 11:43

Well the Glasgow one ran out of fuel didn't it? So total pilot error rather than mechanical failure.

Winstonwolfe · 29/01/2020 11:50

I don't know how safe they are compared to cars but I would not fly in one. The video footage of that helicopter going down a few days ago was horrendous and I sincerely hope the occupants died in the impact and not in the huge fire ball after. Rip

june2007 · 29/01/2020 11:59

Bywhat I can gather the heliscopter Killing the basket ball playerhad issues and shouldn,t have been flying. If this is known then it human error.

Littleelffriend · 29/01/2020 12:07

Spam how did they get people off if not by helicopter?

ItIsAllChange · 29/01/2020 12:24

The video footage of that helicopter going down a few days ago was horrendous and I sincerely hope the occupants died in the impact and not in the huge fire ball after.

I haven’t seen the video but I do know it’s already been formally described as a high energy impact crash and considering the speed and height, I’m sure everyone would have died on impact.

ToolkitQ · 29/01/2020 12:35

@Littleelffriend her DH probably works on a ship. Each rig/group of rigs has a permanently crewed ship which is nearby for rescue and recovery. If helicopter ditched by a rig, the ship has a few minutes to launch rescue craft and be in position to rescue survivors. Ships come into port to crew change rather than by helicopter. Also could be on a supply ship. Anyway all in North Sea (& presume elsewhere) have to do the helicopter evacuation training.

Penzance Heliport is returning! penzanceheliport.co.uk

Oh my word. I can't help but seeing the big notice on the website about it receiving EU funding...

...anyway. Moving on swiftly, that's really good news. I don't suppose Plymouth airport will ever reopen.

NathanNathan · 29/01/2020 14:56

(and anyway Penzance heliport is no more)

It’s restarted from Lands End, or is going to. I prefer the Scillionian even with rough crossings!

Another one who has been in one but would now! I guess as I get older I get more risk averse. Just doesn’t seem worth it!

user1477391263 · 29/01/2020 15:03

Private flying in small aircraft is kind of dangerous. Whether it is a plane or a chopper.

I flew in a small plane a few times, my God it was scary.

chomalungma · 29/01/2020 15:14

I suppose you have to describe what dangerous means. There's countless helicopter flights every day. Crashes are rare.

I have been in one once. Absolutely loved it. I would love to learn to fly one

Charley50 · 29/01/2020 17:34

Statistically it is more dangerous than flying in a place. Quite a lot more dangerous. (I looked at stats online). So I suppose the more you fly by helicopter the higher the chances of crashing, even though it's safe enough to be an actual mode of transport.
No idea why the pilot was cleared to fly in the recent crash though; heavy fog was forecast.

Charley50 · 29/01/2020 17:35

Plane not place. Duh

ivykaty44 · 29/01/2020 17:37

If helicopters were dangerous why would they be used to lift injured people from RTA etc

ivykaty44 · 29/01/2020 17:42

No it's not, this is a fallacy of those stats, especially in the US, where large numbers of the deaths are drunk or dangerous drivers killing themselves, given that you are a passenger in a vehicle, the equivalent statistic would be risk of death in a bus/limo/taxi with the professional driver, not the overall death rate from all cars.

That’s rubbish
