Hip pain waking me every night-anyone else get this?

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 29/01/2020 01:26

I'm once again lying awake having been woken up by pain in both hips. More a bad ache. I've recently started on tramadol (been taking for two days) for chronic back pain and it's worked very well but it's not lasting me the night. I'm 43, not overweight, walk 5 miles a day, and feel like an old woman with all these aches and pains Sad Does anyone else suffer hip pain and if so what causes it and what helps?
(General health is too quiet hence posting here).

Yes, me too. Just this last 6 months. Previously fit, strong, slim, healthy. On hrt since 2015. No idea whats happened. GP, physio & chiro cant help despite repeated treatments. I feel about 90. Considering an MRI scan as i can barely sleep or get out of the car.

quickkimchi · 29/01/2020 01:56

Yes, I've had similar but only on one side, also in addition to back pain (MRI showed arthritis and a slipped disc, L5/S1). What does your GP say?

Tramadol, ibuprofen, cocodamol did nothing for me. Naproxen has really helped and oddly seems easier on my stomach than the first two.
I sleep with a pillow between my knees, which also helps but took a while before I noticed a difference.
You have all my sympathy, the broken sleep was a killer. As you say nothing lasts through the night, so even if I could get four hours of sleep, I'd wake in pain. The naproxen seems to have taken it right down to a tolerable level, so even though I'm not entirely pain-free, I get a better night's sleep.
I do a fair bit of hip stretching and Pilates too. Are your hips tight?

mynamechangemyrules · 29/01/2020 02:09

Yes! But I have had one hip replaced and will get the other done soon. (I'm 42). Also I have 3 split discs which 'throw' pain to my hips as well.

No painkillers work at all for me. What works is
Stretches
Physio
Pilates
Yoga (carefully)
Acupuncture (totally amazing but wish someone could come to my house and do it at bedtime!)

Have been prescribed Amitriptyline but not brave enough to take it as am a solo parent of 3 and worried I'll sleep too well!!

Anyone finds a good painkiller then let me know!

I have hip pain in one hip.
I have been having individual Pilates sessions for a few months and it is definitely starting to help, it isn't easy though.

IvinghoeBeacon · 29/01/2020 03:49

MIL had recurrent hip bursitis in her 50s - she had to have steroid injections I believe

Barefootinthecarpark · 29/01/2020 03:54

Me too, both hips. I walk every evening for 30 mins and this seems to help. Lower back tightness too. I am 44 and this began 6 months ago.

QueenOfOversharing · 29/01/2020 04:10

I was going to mention bursitis. I get pain in my hips, over the "trochanter" - the most sticky out bit of the hip (basically top of femur). It was diagnosed from an mri. Additionally, I get really tight piriformis and iliopsoas muscles & hip flexors - the best thing that helps ease them is pigeon pose or stretches like runners stretch or "thread the needle".

I've tried various pain meds too - interestingly, sometimes I find codydramol better than tramadol (even though tramadol is stronger) but if you can, at night, you can take naproxen (or ibuprofen or diclofenac) with tramadol or codydramol. The NSAIDs can be a bit longer lasting. Obvs - I'm not a medical professional, just giving tips from what I've tried - do speak to doctor about meds!!! And push for an mri - as PP have said, it could be referred pain from lower back.

Are you using a slow release tramadol or other Pom? My husband finds these far better than the normal pain killers

BinkyandBunty · 29/01/2020 04:52

Yoga is the only thing that makes my hip pain go away.

ColdCottage · 29/01/2020 05:12

Do you have a coil?

I had this when I had my second coil put in. Didn't realise for a year that this was what caused it.

Removed it and pain stopped within a couple of months.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 29/01/2020 05:13

I’m 46. Waiting on a hip replacement. I have moderate osteoarthritis in the socket and lipping olus a bony growth on my femur, all on the left. The right seems fine.
My GP sent me off for physio initially, which was useless. I’ve also tried steroid and hyaluronic acid injections. Neither worked. I take naproxen/esomesaprole twice a day and have some tramadol for when they, occasionally, don’t fully help.

Pixxie7 · 29/01/2020 05:15

Try taking paracetamol with the tramadol.

itsboiledeggsagain · 29/01/2020 05:15

Might be far fetched but worth a try: I had leg joint pain and started taking magnesium. Gone within 24h and not back since. Been a few months now.

Soontobe60 · 29/01/2020 05:38

Believe it is not, my hip pain stopped when I got a new bed! We now have a Leesa mattress which initially seems too hard, but is actually very supportive. (Does bugger all for my dodgy knee though🤷🏼‍♀️)

SunshineAvenue · 29/01/2020 06:59

@MooseBeTimeForSummer would you be willing to share how you got to the point of diagnosis?

I am a few years older than you but have a dull ache pretty consistently in one hip (where the leg meets the buttock) deep set so massage gives very little relief, stretching helps and it's worse when I've been sitting for long periods of time. Started a year ago after an uncomfortable 12 hour flight though have always had a (painless) clicky hip on that side. I also get lower back pain on the same side though more a feeling of strained muscle than a 'pain'.

Seen a chiro and a physio who tell me there's nothing wrong, I'm just unfit and overweight (true and true). Wonder if it's something more serious that will get worse over time but think visit to GP unless you're in agony is pointless as you have to be at the end of your tether before they'll look into it.

What happened with you?

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 29/01/2020 07:06

Yes, see a doctor

In some cases the body realigns itself, but in other cases intervention is needed.

A friend of mine had an op to scrape away extra bits of bone (spurs?) that were causing her terrible pain. Two other friends in their 40s have had hip replacements this year.

Get it looked at

Hoohaahoo · 29/01/2020 07:10

Yes, I’m only 30 but feel I have the hips of a 90 year old sometimes.
I’ve found doing strength training around them helps, things like clams etc. Also different hip stretches.

At night I have a leg pillow that I put between my legs to balance my hips and spine out. Helps a lot.

NetofLemons · 29/01/2020 07:10

Also please check your Vit D levels which can get very low and then cause joint pain incl hip pain.

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/01/2020 07:15

I get this. It was diagnosed as a trapped nerve and I take amitriptyline for it before bed. I'm usually fine walking about but it starts to hurt when I lie down or sit for any length of time.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 29/01/2020 07:16

I second the vitamin d needing to be checked. Takes a few months for the pain to go once you get your levels back up, but after I'd just been handed painkillers for it for years, it was annoying to find out that a few supplements would have sorted it.

longwayoff · 29/01/2020 07:32

4.30 every morning. Nothing helps.

Amicompletelyinsane · 29/01/2020 07:36

I've had back issues etc. Assumed hip pain was linked. However I just got a new bed and mattress. Really thick form mattress and the pain has magically vanished

mathanxiety · 29/01/2020 08:10

I had awful hip pain when pg (many years ago now).

The only thing that improved it was walking daily, and getting a very supportive memory foam mattress, with a body pillow.

If it flares up I increase my walking.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 29/01/2020 09:09

Thank you for all the replies. They won't test for vitamin d here as e wry one would be deficient. I do take supplements. I also take paracetamol 4 times a day along with the tramadol. I was on dihydrocodeine but the tramadol seems to work better for my back. I can't take NSAIDs unfortunately due to asthma and gastritis. My mattress is fairly new and has a topper on it.
I've got a drs appointment today
