Rare visit to primark. What should I buy?

I'm in my closest town centre for work tomorrow which has a fairly large primark. I'm planning on popping in to have a browse. What should I keep my eye out for?

@Givemeabreakpls yes it is. Its actually very good and has really good reviews. For a fiver its a great everyday foundation. The range of shades isnt amazing but hopefully you can find one to suit. Its in the same shape bottle as doublewear

FleurNancy · 28/01/2020 07:55

Nothing. It's fast fashion throwaway crap.

FemiLANGul · 28/01/2020 08:11

With cheap clothes YOU might not be paying the price for their creation but someone is.

It's not just 'cheap clothes' this applies to though.

Winniethepoohbear · 28/01/2020 13:24

Can anyone PM charities or someone in need who could use the Primark voucher.

listsandbudgets · 28/01/2020 13:56

I don't think Primark is trashy throw away stuff - if you choose carefully. I agree some of it isn't great especially the more fashionable stuff

I've got clothes I've had for years without a problem. In fact I got my favourite pair of pyjamas from there a few weeks after DS was born - he's now 7. They are perhaps getting a little worn now. I've passed lots of children's clothes onto my nephews and some of them are third or fouth hand now and still going strong.

LilyJade · 28/01/2020 14:19

Duvet covers, sheets & pillowcases.
Tea towels.
Leggings
T-shirts
Ankle socks, sports liners & fluffy socks
Face wipes
Nail varnish
Skirts
Pyjama bottoms
Shoes, flip flops, trainers, boots

SallyWD · 28/01/2020 15:57

I bought some of their knickers in an emergency about a year ago. I fully expected them to be very poor quality and fall apart after a few washes. They're great! 100% cotton, really comfy, wash up well. A year later they're still as good as new. The sizes were huge though - I got a medium size (or maybe a 12) and they're much bigger than the M and S equivalent.

Branleuse · 29/01/2020 08:33

@GetUpAgain I LOVE those slouchy tshirts. Theyre fairly thin but I love that as its part of the drape and the neckline is perfect.

Lots of stuff in primark is decent quality and lasts. They have better policies than a lot of more expensive places , but less mark up.
Cheap throwaway fashion is only such if you acually throw it away and dont respect it.

I think you can tell when you feel it if its going to last etc. You do your own checks on that

SnowBrussels · 29/01/2020 08:50

I can’t afford to throw away clothing and only buy what I need. So I have Primark basics like plain long-sleeved tops that have lasted about 5 years without going bobbly. Ditto for flannelette and fleecy pyjamas. I like their opaque tights and everyday underwear too.
I hope the critics here realise that the higher end brands often mentioned on MN are all in business to maximise profit and don’t have clean hands either...

NotAPan · 29/01/2020 09:00

I'm also in the "but the higher priced brands don't pay supplier any more for their stock either" camp.
The "dress" length vest tops are great for not having a midriff gap to get cold in winter if you're tall. They have lasted much better than my long tall sally ones that were 4 x the price - I've had these 6 or more years and stitched spaghetti straps back on when the plastic ring broke, before anybody accuses me of throwaway culture. Hmm

Bedding and homeware is good, though wash dark bedding carefully as the dye is still leaching out of one I bought a couple of years ago! Their wipes are great but I've stopped using them because of plastic - I use their flannels instead.

doodleygirl · 29/01/2020 09:07

They often have cotton v neck jumpers which are great - Ive got a couple which are still going strong after a few years, always wash well. Gym leggings are also pretty good.

For the posters saying everything is rubbish and its throw away fashion can you tell me what the difference is if I buy a polyester blouse from Primark at £14 or from Whistles at £60. Why is the first one throwaway but the second one isnt? Ive often wondered this.

TanselleTooTall · 29/01/2020 09:10

Wrapping paper! It's the best.
Children's socks.
Excellent for stocking filler type small things.
Acrylic make up organiser drawers and brush holders.

Blobby10 · 29/01/2020 09:26

Went into one at the weekend where they had some nice DKNY and Michael Kors black coats in for £70-90. Can't afford that right now but would definitely get one if I could!

Imoan123 · 29/01/2020 12:51

Kids clothes
Reusable microfiber face cloth - dupe for the expensive makeup eraser cloth

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 29/01/2020 13:03

Agree with posters saying it's only throwaway fashion if you treat it as such and many more expensive places aren't much better (Next, I'm looking at you. More £ but just as cheap fabric/workmanship). I've bought basics like t shirts to layer with that with careful washing are going strong 5 years on.

I love their merchandise stuff and if you're a Stranger Things fan they've some great stuff in now. Homeward is great. Look for their red sticker reduced stuff. I've bought so many sets of indoor and outdoor strung lights for a quid!

Also if you've a DD around 11-12 who's tall but slim and pretty much all legs the size Xxs or 2XS is perfect for this in between sizes age. We got mine a lovely short a-line button up courderoy skirt for £1 last week Smile She loves it will wear it with care and once she's grown out I will pass it on to her cousins if it's still in good nick.

In Primark?

Nalanoodle · 29/01/2020 13:19

I always buy about 50 hair bobbles and socks. Loads of pants for my child. Tbh I never find clothing for me in there. Cute tops for the kids though.

IslandTulip · 29/01/2020 13:21

I buy pyjamas for all of us, towels, bedding, t shirts, jeans for dds

Hellokittymania · 29/01/2020 13:23

I've had some things for 4 years from primark. I check the quality though.

I like the hoodies and warm shirts.

IslandTulip · 29/01/2020 13:24

Dd had boots and copies of Vans shoes from there which were nice and have lasted well.

IslandTulip · 29/01/2020 13:26

The jeans, towels and bedding have also lasted very well

Holdingtherope · 29/01/2020 13:34

Bamboo washable round little things to take make up off

Imperialmeasurements · 29/01/2020 15:01

I often buy hoodies/sweatshirts, thick socks, bedding there. I don’t agree that everything is throwaway/poor quality - some of their stuff is great - just choose with care.
I simply cannot now bring myself to pay £50+ for a similar quality sweatshirt elsewhere.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 29/01/2020 15:41

They do great little gel pads for the backs of shoes to prevent blisters. If you're careful to remove them after and put them onto their plastic backing you'll get lots of wears from them. Especially effective on ankle shredding ballet flats when worn with no tights Wink

rockingthelook · 29/01/2020 20:43

Fleecy pj's, last ages
socks
Primer water
£2.50 foundation it tube, great colour for me
Ribbed polar neck skinny jumper, had for 3 years now, still looking good
Soft black jeans with stretch, brilliant
Bath sheets, bought 2 in the sale 2 years ago, £4 each, so fluffy and big even now, so wish I'd bought more
Can't stand all their polyester blouses, horrible cheap material
