Anyone else still need to do their tax return?

Not just their return but the whole years accounts. Blush

I’m fucked. I will get it done in time, they’re not especially complex, just long winded and a faff. But why do I do this to myself??

I'm not in the UK, but I see I've found my people here. Tax day for us is April 15th, which is generally the day I submit my return. I also often end up sending in a cheque for my unpaid taxes, hoping against hope that they won't cash it till after payday.

HoldMyLobster · 28/01/2020 00:16

BUT THIS YEAR WILL BE DIFFERENT.

AllNewThings · 28/01/2020 00:16

We've been trying to do ours for days. We need to repay Child Benefit because DH received a redundancy payment so it's the first and only time we'll have to do it. I know to the £ how much we owe them but we cannot get the calculation to come out correctly! WHY?!?! It's driving me insane. Every time we go back through the figures, it comes up with a new calculation, but it's never right! We've just submitted it cause I don't know what else to do and I don't want to get a fine. What happens now though? I don't want to pay a bill I know is incorrect. Why is it so bloody complicated? 🤬

@AllNewThings You are doing something wrong if you get a different figure every time

It may also be distorted if he is not on a normal tax code, has a P11d, etc

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 28/01/2020 06:57

Every year I say I’m going to do it in April. This year I think I will.... Brew

I’m up early to get cracking! Who is with me? Anyone else going to be doing some of theirs today?

I have to send my information to my accountant today. I'm toying with the idea of doing it myself. How hard is it. Three dividend payments one small salary payment. Bank account interest under £50. Nothing else.

Headfull · 28/01/2020 07:11

DP is an accountant/tax advisor in a small firm. Their clients aren’t ones where it is so very simple, but instead those with eg property/ small businesses where they either aren’t capable or quite frankly just don’t want to be bothered with doing it themselves. He’d always encourage someone who is capable and with a simple return to do it themselves because quite frankly the time taken on client paperwork / chasing for information etc needed for a return that they can only charge £200 for isn’t worth it. It’s people who have more complex accounts or who need help tax planning who really use his skills.

PawPawNoodle · 28/01/2020 07:12

I need to do mine (no accountant) and I have to do it with traditional accounting instead of cash basis as I bought a new work car last tax year 🥴

I'm doing mine today. Might be a few tears along the way.

userxx · 28/01/2020 07:29

@kjhkj You'll easily be able to do it. Have you got a tax account set up with HMRC so you can make the submission?

kjhkj · 28/01/2020 07:33

I have a government gateway login etc. Is that what I need? I do my own vat returns.

userxx · 28/01/2020 07:36

@AllNewThings I'm presuming the redundancy payment was over £30k ?

userxx · 28/01/2020 07:39

@kjhkj That's what you need but it might be purely for VAT, log in and have a look if there's an option to submit a personal tax return.

Lovelydovey · 28/01/2020 07:39

I did mine yesterday - essentially to confirm that I had already repaid the child benefit. HMRC owe me £15 - whoop, whoop!

Kez200 · 28/01/2020 07:43

Ive 9 left to do, but Im an accountant! Theyve all come in since Christmas. Mine was done early this year but I am usually filing it about now.

I remember pre self assessment when self employed were taxed on the prior years basis. So for 18 /19 you would be taxed on the accounts ending in the 17/18 tax year. Can you imagine that? And the very same people were late doing accounts then too! Im sure its just a personality thing and, hey, if you make the deadline. Thats what deadlines are for!

ImperfectTents · 28/01/2020 07:46

I do mine in April . I can't stand having it hanging over me

MaxPanic · 28/01/2020 07:47

Just out of interest, does anyone do a self assessment return who ISN'T self employed (i.e employed on PAYE) and has no other income?

Many of my employed colleagues do, saying they get rebates for business mileage or something, and that it's worth doing. I work in financial services but I don't really understand, why would you need to do a tax return if everything is worked out at source by your employer and the tax office?

I was self employed for 10 months a few years ago and did my 2 returns and made my payments for the two tax years I crossed, that's it. Confused

kjhkj · 28/01/2020 07:49

userxx Yes its letting me do self assessment since I have two different logins, one for me and one for the company. Right, I'm going to give this ago and hopefully save myself £299 plus vat (although I suspect the invoice for the corporation tax submission will then coincidentally be a bit higher this year...)

Ilovewillow · 28/01/2020 07:59

I am an Accountant although corporate- if it makes you feel better I only did mine yesterday!!

userxx · 28/01/2020 08:02

@kjhkj Excellent. The majority of our clients don't even know what the government gateway is 😞. Roll on Friday 🙏🍷

PineappleDanish · 28/01/2020 08:09

GET ON WITH IT.

I am self-emplyoed and have to do an annual tax return. I get that it's a faff and a pain in the arse and you'd quite frankly rather be doing anything else. But mine is very straightforward and not something I could justtify asking an accountant to do.

Just remember that you can complete your tax return and submit it without paying what you owe - I did that in October, just made the payment on it a couple of days ago.

I wouldn't ever risk leaving it this late, there have been issues in the past with the site going down the HMRC take the view that it's not their fault as you had months to get it in and you shouldn't have left it to the last minute.

userxx · 28/01/2020 08:50

@PineappleDanish If the site goes down HMRC will allow for this, as long as it's a known error at their end. From memory I'm sure we've been allowed an extra day or so in the past. Still not a good idea till leave it till the last minute though!

RunSkipJump · 28/01/2020 09:05

MaxPanic
It may be worth doing a self assessment if you pay into a pension and are in the higher tax band. You'll get a rebate on tax paid on the pension contributions. My DH got quite a bit back this way as he claimed it for a few years at once.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/01/2020 09:06

Did mine mid December but I hate it and always put it off - it sits there like a nagging black cloud on my shoulder. Don’t really know why I put it off since it’s fairly straightforward.
Didn’t pay my tax bill until about a week ago, though.
Used to have an accountant when affairs were more complex, but still had to find all the paperwork to give her. I loathe paperwork!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 28/01/2020 09:07

I did mine yesterday!! Actually, it was quite good because I left it so late - normally I fret over it and triple check everything then save it and double check it again, this year I was so desperate to get it done that I flew through it.

Get it done peeps! WineCakeBrew for aftershock!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 28/01/2020 09:07

AFTERS not aftershock, jeez!
