Washing period knickers

twosoups1972 · 27/01/2020 11:30

Have washed and re-washed and can't get rid of the red stain (sorry TMI). Dd not keen on using them again while they're like this.

Any tips how to get the stain out please?

Confused. The inside of period pants is black. How do blood stains show up on black fabric? I can't see how they would.

Straycatstrut · 27/01/2020 12:47

Before I went on the implant (always stops my periods) I tried cloth pads they were AMAZING. Some of them were so soft and the stains came out in a regular wash every time. Maybe try these OP?

There's so many designs. I have all different colours and patterns and fluffy ones. Black ones for night time.

Can see them bring a bit of fun to periods for young girls Grin

Got a lot of mine from here:

Are they Modibodis? Do not use any stain remover, they will destroy them.

We rinse immediately and if there is a stain I treat them just with the liquid detergent before dumping them in the washing machine. So far one small hint is still there but DD still wears them.

Disposable pads aren't on the way out, by any means, although it would be nice if they were.

I would never have been able to use period pants, my flow was way too heavy, but I used a moon cup.

DD is similar, uses cloth pads. These are soaked in cold water for a few hours, no salt as it will fix the stain. Then washed on 30 degrees, no conditioner. Works well, no stains.

Branleuse · 27/01/2020 13:05

I would do them on a extra long wash with biological washing powder.
Also make sure theyre not sitting waiting to be washed for long so that it dries, as thats harder to get off.
Tell your dd that if she doesnt get them washed quick enough, then they will stain, and that its perfectly normal for period underwear to have stains and noone will see it, and it doesnt mean its dirty,

bellinisurge · 27/01/2020 13:08

Dd uses period pants and we have never had a problem either. Rinse in cold water before putting in the wash.

DesLynamsMoustache · 27/01/2020 13:20

I love my period pants! I use with with a reusable pad overnight and on their own on lighter flow days and they're so much nicer than disposable pads. Agree that soaking in cold water is a good idea. I have a Cheeky Wipes box with a mesh net that I fill with cold water and put my period pants and pads in, then the whole mesh bag just comes out and goes in the washing machine.

LemonPrism · 27/01/2020 16:12

I doubt a teenager would be comfortable shoving a massive moon cup up her! Goodness.

I don't bleed much so I'd be fine with the period pants... I don't think they're gross like PP have implied. although your DD does need to get over her blushes Op. there's a mountain of stained clothing/bedsheets/ towels in her future she may as well get over it now.

Sparklyring · 28/01/2020 20:27

@lemonprism But would be happy wearing blood soaked knickers all day?

DesLynamsMoustache · 28/01/2020 20:31

For the last time - the blood is absorbed into the inner core, like a sanitary pad, and there is a layer on top that wicks away any moisture. They aren't normal pairs of cotton knickers with you sitting in a pool of blood Hmm You don't feel damp or wet. That's the whole point of them.

And yes, I wish they'd been around when I was a teenager. I wasn't comfortable trying tampons for a few years after starting my periods, and period pants would have been great, especially as my periods were very light then.

PristineCondition · 28/01/2020 20:34

@27Sparklyring
Well it's not bloodsoaked knickers she's wearing. It's specially designed period pants, perhaps Google so you know what they actually are.
You seem rather confused by period products the research could help you get over that

Spartonian · 28/01/2020 20:43

@twosoups1972 are you sure it's blood stains and not just a bit of bleaching to the material from discharge/period.

EmpressJewel · 29/01/2020 07:25

I agree with spartonian. If the underwear is black it's probably discharge. This has happened to mine.

twosoups1972 · 29/01/2020 14:41

Yes I was surprised a stain shows up on black! But it does.

I was getting a wash together this morning and noticed dd had put a few worn but not marked pads in her wet bag. Those went untreated into a normal wash with a scoop of Oxyclean. However there are other used ones in the wet bag with a few signs of use including discharge (sorry/not sorry TMI) including black ones. I will treat with a stain stick after a brief cold rinse under the tap then stick in a normal wash with a scoop of Oxyclean.

Duckyneedsaclean · 29/01/2020 15:51

@MulticolourMophead you might be surprised, the heavy ones I use hold up to 5 tampons worth (iirc). On heavy days I soak through a heavy tampon every 2hrs so wear these as backup through morning then without tampon until bedtime.

BiBabbles · 29/01/2020 15:59

I'd be surprised at visible stains on black as well (I use black knickers with cloth pads), but I have heard there have been issues with care and maintenance with some kinds of period knickers & I imagine they'll never look pristine. Hopefully the previously laundry tips helps as they were all I had.

elliemcx · 29/01/2020 16:05

rub vanish soap on when wet and leave for five minutes then wash as normal

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/01/2020 16:29

I have a set of knickers out aside for my period. I just put them on boiled wash as I do with all my underwear

smemorata · 29/01/2020 16:31

I have black modibodi and I find that if you rinse them out straight away, they are fine when they come out of the washing machine.

RetreatingWeasels · 29/01/2020 16:35

You aren't supposed to soak period pants. You rinse them in cold water until it runs clear, then they can machine wash. I use surcare rather than detergent.

damnthatanxiety · 29/01/2020 16:36

Not trying to be dumb here but WHAT exactly shows up? The pants are black. Blood is browny red. You can't see red on black. What does the stain look like/ (sorry again for sounding a bit stupid but I am struggling to picture a blood stain showing on black fabric).

ILikeyourHairyHands · 29/01/2020 16:39

Hi OP, it's probably not the blood that's stained, women with a more acidic vagina actually 'bleach' the gusset on black pants and it can look redish, like a blood stain. It's perfectly clean, but as it's the actual fabric that's been affected, it won't come out!

(Speaks the voice of experience!).

Wereallsquare · 29/01/2020 16:41

I have a black pair and yes, they are stained. It is definitely unpleasant: I do use them for sleeping but now I am not keen on wearing them during the day. They are not a perfect solution.

Halestorm · 29/01/2020 16:45

But would be happy wearing blood soaked knickers all day?

They are specific knickers with a built in reusable sanitary pad, are you thinking of the old style period knickers which meant just wearing old pants that you don't mind getting ruined while you are on your period?

I've not tried these new generation ones but they sound fab!
