How warm is your house?

I'm currently sitting in my noticeably chilly sitting room, cuddling the dog and resisting putting the heating on.

According to the thermometer, it's 16°C in here. It usually hovers around 18°C, which I find comfortable, but we've had the window open.
This might not be particularly astonishing, but I usually find other people's homes far, far too warm. So I was idly wondering what kind of temperature others prefer to heat their homes to.

My thermostat is V unreliable
Its either on or off at 20

userxx · 26/01/2020 15:48

@TheChosenTwo 😱😱😱 I'd be passed out on the sofa with heat stroke.

iklboo · 26/01/2020 15:49

About 20 but it keeps dropping as the Cat1 is in and out of the front room like a fiddler's elbow and while he's learned to open the door he's not learned to close it. Or he has but won't because he's a cat and why should he when he has a hooman slave to do it.

Megan2018 · 26/01/2020 15:51

20 downstairs, 18 upstairs. I like it warm!

Katinski · 26/01/2020 15:52

I like my rooms like I like my men - HOT,HOT,HOTGrin

thisisthetime · 26/01/2020 15:57

20 during the day. 15 overnight, any warmer and I find it too hot to sleep.

MegaClutterSlut · 26/01/2020 16:05

Around 18. Anything higher then 20-22 is too hot for me. Mil used to have hers on 25+. Me and dh had to keep going outside to cool off, it was unbearable

Roomba · 26/01/2020 16:05

I always feel too hot in other people's houses. Generally our thermostat is set to 17C and my kids start moaning it's too hot if it goes any higher. I suspect the years we spent super skint have meant we're just used to it being colder. Plus my last house didn't have any central heating at all.

You always get competitive shiverers/sweaters on these threads though - 'we are melting if it goes over 6 degrees, think of the planet!' vs 'what's the point of living if you can't sit round in your undies with the heat cranked up to 30 degrees? Life's too short to be cold'. I reckon have your own house how you like it!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 26/01/2020 16:10

Well, our heating packed in, so DH's office where he has to spend 16 h working at a PC currently has 17°C after hours with an electric heater.
The DC's room where DD has to do uni work is at 14°C with an electric heater.
Bathroom, dinner / living space and kitchen: 10° C
My room, where we sleep and I work and MN: 15° and sinking - the heater has been remove to the office.

All of this is definitely too cold to sit and work in comfortably.
We are all dressed in layers, with blankets and hot water bottles. but my hands are freezing.
And I have to get clean and presentable for work tommorrow without hot water.

viccat · 26/01/2020 16:16

Usually around 16C during the day (heating off) and then the thermostat is set to somewhere between 18-19C from 5pm until bedtime. I prefer to wear a warm cardi/extra socks and have blankets on the sofa rather than heat it up too much - plus trying to be a bit eco...

dontmesswiththeGC · 26/01/2020 16:27

24 when I'm home

megletthesecond · 26/01/2020 16:28

22°.

TheChosenTwo · 26/01/2020 16:30

It gets up to about 28 if I shut the door and don’t open a window when the fire is going! I swear I am cold blooded Grin
I love it but I do like to be sitting around in a T-shirt and leggings so not super warm and wrapped up in layers. I could cope with it being 22 in the house but would definitely need to wrap up more which I hate, layers make me feel bulky and uncomfortably restricted. I sleep naked in bed for the same reason - too much fabric and restrictions!

Oblomov20 · 26/01/2020 16:33

19

HarrietSchulenberg · 26/01/2020 16:50

Thermostat in the hall is set to 22 but the living room is nothing like that, more like about 15. Upstairs will be around 20.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 26/01/2020 16:55

I am comfy at about 18-19 in my house and turn heating off at bedtime....I cannot have heating on during the night...id wake up feeling ill.

MarieG10 · 26/01/2020 16:57

Bedroom 17-18. Lounge and living areas 24 degrees ...underfloor heating soma different feel to it

bloodywhitecat · 26/01/2020 17:10

18° downstairs and around 15° in the bedrooms, I warm the bedrooms up slightly before the kids go to be but overnight the thermostat kicks in if it drops below 14°

BBInSleepsCounting · 26/01/2020 18:05

At the moment the main sitting room and bedrooms in use are heated to 14-15. The rest of the house is unheated. It is a losing battle with draughty old stone houses in exposed locations with mainly stone floors and original single-glazed windows. Bathroom visits are taken at a run! Six weeks or whatever of all day freezing temperatures with ice even forming on the inside of the glass can be a bit much at times too.

It's a good excuse to drink lots of tea, hot chocolate and coffee, eat soup and other comfort foods and cuddle up though. We're usually cosy enough in our layers, socks and slippers. We have throws on the sofas, thick quilts and blankets on the beds, wear pyjamas and dressing gowns, and use hot water bottles when it gets really cold. Even this laptop is a welcome source of heat then. It's warmer too with an animal draped or curled up asleep on you or if you can beat them/everyone else in the race to be closest to the fires!

It can get a little chilly and be harder work but on balance I much prefer it to being overheated - especially when visiting friends who have almost constant central heating on at 20-25+ or whatever and wander about in t-shirts or bare feet - kids too - yet complain about fuel bills, global warming and pollution?! Unless warmer temperatures are needed because of medical conditions or disability, we all need to turn the thermostat down a little now, surely - what would our National Treasure Sir David Attenborough say?

19-20 during the day in winter. Heating is off at night.

Theonewiththecat · 26/01/2020 18:20

We don't have a thermostat the heating is either on or off.
Down stairs we have the fire going too so it is so much warmer than upstairs.
I am currently sat in a tshirt, if I get cold I'll throw on a blanket (I cant wear jumpers, they infuriate me)

AmazingGreats · 26/01/2020 18:28

19/20. I'm cold so put my dressing gown on but only because I'm sat down. When I get up and start doing stuff in a minute I'll be hot and probably open a window for a bit. I know I'm a bit poorly/ run down when I put it up to 22/23 to feel warm. I try to use extra layers now. At night it's 16/17 my kids love to be in a cool room at night and I used to, but now I get cold a lot more so take a hot water bottle to bed and put on an extra blanket.

SpecLosers · 26/01/2020 18:28

My gas boiler died last Friday. I refused to panic as I don't like the house to be overcooked anyway.

We have halogen heaters and an oil filled radiator plus electric blanket on the bed (bliss).

Just had a look at the weather station and it is 19.7 degrees in the kitchen WITHOUT any heat source at all since dinner at 2.30pm. Lounge area is big and open and is reading 18d.

All perfectly liveable until Mr. Boilerman fixes the problem! Probably won't be much warmer, but it's easier and cheaper to use gas than electric I suppose. Bracing myself for big leccy bill, but what the heck, thankful I can afford it.
