Does anyone use their garage for its intended purpose?

To store a car and not all the crap you don't want in the house?

I know nobody that uses it for their actual car

We call ours the garage, but, seeing as the up and over door doesn't work, and it's on 3 levels, none of which you'd get a car in, it's more of a glorified brick shed with a leaky roof and a touch of woodworm
Holds loads of shite, nothing that can go mouldy or will be attractive to mice, so it's basically full of garden tools carefully placed so they're not under any drips, and my dads extra stuff that he doesn't want in his shed. Plus many many bikes, only 2 of which are ever used.
I'd clear it out, but its bottom of the priority list.
Dh had great plans for it, until he spoke to a garage door man, who told us we'd need to get the (probably asbestos) roof replaced before putting a new door on, and we'd be looking at well over £10k. And it still won't be big enough for a car.

I converted my garage to a living room, hallway and loo/utility. Much more useful!

Musicalmistress · 25/01/2020 01:00

Couldn't fit even a ridiculously small car in our garage - well maybe the car but you certainly couldn't open the car door to get out 🧐

HoldMyLobster · 25/01/2020 01:09

We have a double garage and a carport. In winter we put all three cars away especially if it's going to snow.

As well as two cars, the garage stores all the gardening equipment, skis, snowboards, chain saws, bird seed, road salt, camping equipment, a bike or two, all the bike equipment, a lawn mower, we used to keep the summer tyres there, and all the beach stuff. I'm sure there's other stuff buried in there.

In the carport we keep car in winter / 5 bikes in summer, a snowblower, two canoes, the generator, all the chopped and unchopped wood, ax, and some random crap.

It's too cold in winter to keep a second fridge/freezer in the garage - we tried it but it just stopped working, so it lives in the cellar, which is also full of other stuff.

HerRoyalNotness · 25/01/2020 01:14

Only if there is a storm coming. We’ll push all the stuff to the sides and put my car away. H’s stays on the drive, his is a older and more worn out. It’s a double garage but we have bikes, strollers, camping stuff, seasonal outdoor decorations, a small kids car, bbq and summer stuff packed away in there. Along with some packing boxes we keep holding on to but have had no need of in 6 years Sad

Miljea · 25/01/2020 01:26

Garage? 1998 estate house. In-built garage. If your car lacked a sunroof, you'd never get out!😂

We've converted ours, 2/3 to a second sitting room. We've retained the up and over door, where we keep the bikes and shitze.

MAFIL · 25/01/2020 02:06

I just misread your post HerRoyalNotness and thought you kept your small kids in the garage with the BBQ and camping stuff. A tempting proposition from time to time. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 25/01/2020 06:45

Where's the OP?

Soontobe60 · 25/01/2020 06:52

@AgeLikeWine

When my DH bought a new car, SUV, he went for a test drive, drove it home and put it in the garage, to make sure it fitted in! The sales man was gobsmacked!

So yes, we put a car in the garage, plus bikes, a workbench, tools and all along the back are shelves on which my DH stores the wood he collects for our wood burner. He won't allow me to put any 'crap' in there - I use our loft for my crap 🤣🤣

MaxPaddyandHarry · 25/01/2020 07:04

My friend. It is a double garage so one half has 'stuff' in it and the other half has the car.

KitKatBox · 25/01/2020 07:08

My parents do - I never have !

MirandaWest · 25/01/2020 07:11

My mum does

Ginfordinner · 25/01/2020 07:34

Why is it a badge of honour on here to own so much "stuff"? We have moved house too many times to accumulate too much crap.

Icanflyhigh · 25/01/2020 07:40

Yep! We keep our 2 seater convertible in there for the rare weekends we are without DC and can be like carefree teenagers again!

DownstairsMixUp · 25/01/2020 09:29

Our old house had a garage but our new one doesn't. We used to store crap in ours to.

Cremebrule · 25/01/2020 09:35

My dad does. He also has the most organised garage in the world. Ours doesn’t fit our cars and is a messy dumping ground. I aspire to have my dad’s organisation but I just can’t be bothered.

Cremebrule · 25/01/2020 09:37

We also want to do a garage conversion but need to find somewhere to put the crap. Could anyone that has done it give an idea of cost?

MartyrGuacamole · 25/01/2020 09:57

Ours is currently being used as a wine/beer cellar as it is perfect chiller temperature 🤣

KitKatBox · 25/01/2020 10:04

cremebrule my dad is the same. His garage is super organised with a rubber floor, workbench, freezer and a deep shelf on three sides that is stocked with 1,000,000 toilet rolls, kitchen rolls and various other things
and he parks his car in it.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 25/01/2020 10:14

Ours doesn't fit my CR-V, it literally won't go in. DW's Auris will, but you can only open the door 18 inches. The previous owner built it as an extension to an 8 foot wide kitchen, and kept motorbikes in it.

Happygirl79 · 25/01/2020 10:14

Generally I think it's an age thing. Older people use their garage to house their car.
Younger people are lazier
Its too much bother
And I am guilty of being too lazy to do it
My drive is really long and the garage is in the back garden. I wouldn't trust myself being able to reverse right back down the drive without demolishing the side fence

Brahumbug · 25/01/2020 11:18

BohoBunney
What kind of campervan do have? We have VW T25Wink

Witchend · 25/01/2020 11:28

My parents did until my df got into woodwork, then the car was relegated outside for his tools. Grin

I don't think you could get a car in ours. We have a funny direction drive that curves round by the house. It would be very likely you'd hit the house on the way in or out.
Anyway it's full of rubbish!

Pineapplesgrowonbushes · 25/01/2020 11:48

I tried to get my car in the garage once, hit to house by mistake. Never tried since, but the paint and other shite has a nice warm place to live

DesLynamsMoustache · 25/01/2020 11:53

@Cremebrule We are paying about £15,000 for ours.
