Does anyone use their garage for its intended purpose?

To store a car and not all the crap you don't want in the house?

I know nobody that uses it for their actual car

9 months of the year it's stuffed with horse hay/feed. July to Sept my car is in there - 43c heat and black leather seats do not make for a comfortable drive!

autumndreaming · 24/01/2020 21:41

My grandma does

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 24/01/2020 21:42

We do!

Admittedly we have a double garage and only one car so still room for 8(!) bikes and quite a lot of crap.

I probably wouldn’t bother and we left it out a bit over the summer but it is very nice to not have to de-ice it when it is cold. The only snag is if we go somewhere in the evening and it ices up we are not very well equipped for de-icing.

HuckfromScandal · 24/01/2020 21:43

I do, I have done since I got a garage, I love it, I take enormous pleasure from never having to de ice my car!
Recently moved into my dp’s house, and the first thing that happened was I cleared the garage so I can park in it every night, I do have automatic garage doors, At both houses, which does make it much easier. But where I live, you can have to scrape your car for at least 4 months of the year, for me it is a total no brainer.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 24/01/2020 21:44

I don’t use it for a car, it’s got an extra freezer, tools etc in there.

My drive can have 3 cars on it though so no need to use it for a car really

BohoBunney · 24/01/2020 21:45

Not the day to day car that's on the drive. The camper van is in it though.

MinesAPintOfTea · 24/01/2020 21:48

Well to get the car in we would have to get it up a path that narrows to 75cm

Half of it is dedicated to storing bikes - which are commuted on every day

ClinkyMonkey · 24/01/2020 21:49

We don't have a garage, but occasionally consider the benefits of having one built so we'd have somewhere to keep all our crap😁

Troels · 24/01/2020 21:49

We did at our old house, it was big enough for work bench tool chests a boat and a car. This house you can't open the car doors if you drive in, so it has Tool chests and small workbench a fridge and freezer and a laundry bit.

pourmeanotherglass · 24/01/2020 21:58

We do. We live in an inner city area near a football stadium with limited parking.

Comefromaway · 24/01/2020 22:04

We had ours converted to an office/music room.

Poetryinaction · 24/01/2020 22:04

Ours is an art studio.

mumwon · 24/01/2020 22:09

@Poetryinaction love it!

Sarjest · 24/01/2020 22:12

I leave mine out but DH hides his car in the garage away from the aggressive resident robin. It sees the drive as its territory and took umbrage at our arrival, showing its displeasure by defecating all over the vehicle. Those things can poo! Robin 1, DH 0.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/01/2020 22:14

Motorbike in ours, plus bikes, scooters, garden tools, sledges...

undercoveraessedai · 24/01/2020 22:24

Nope, I tried but I couldn't get out of my (small, convertible) car once it was in. Current car wouldn't fit at all so I've turned the garage into an office :)

Forestcantrun · 24/01/2020 22:27

Our garage doesn't appear to be built car sized 😂 More the holder of crap/utility room/beerstorer

Hassled · 24/01/2020 22:30

My PILs. Not us - we've worked out we can't ever move house because the reality of clearing all our shite out of the garage would break us.

MAFIL · 24/01/2020 22:43

Our double garage does have a car in it - DH's " priceless classic" Hmm
Along with assorted parts salvaged from dead, clisely related priceless classics which will be used to keep the precious vehicle on the road for as long as possible, multiple tools to perform the "surgery" and a lathe, milling machine, pillar drill and a pile of other crap that I don't understand that is apparently also crucial to its well being.
The cars that we actually drive, live on the drive.
And he moans about me having a few bikes in the house.Wink

Ginfordinner · 24/01/2020 22:51

If you have so much stuff that you're storing a garage full of it outside your main house, you probably need to have a clear out

I agree. Our garage is actually a 1½ width garage so we have room to store garden tools and my bike, plus a storage unit and a small freezer.

MsRinky · 24/01/2020 23:12

Camper van, Bikes, workbenches, beer fridge, tools, all in there. Car lives in carport which is fairly ugly but means I never have to scrape ice off it in winter.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 25/01/2020 00:30

We have a double garage and my lovely car lives in one half and DH’s half dozen bikes and assorted motorbikes and tools live in the other half.

DH’s car roughs it on the drive.Grin

Our garage door has a remote control thingummybob that makes me feel like Batman driving into the Batcave. Small pleasures.

Idontkowmyname · 25/01/2020 00:33

Store crap in ours more so while in the midst of renovations. Less clutter in the main house this way.

KTyoupigeon · 25/01/2020 00:36

Integral garage and it’s been converted to an office and dining room. It had been partially
Converted to a playroom but now has a window in and fully converted. Just built a shed thingy onto the side of the house for the ‘stuff’ that you need to keep in a garage. Car wouldn’t fit in centrally and be able to open both doors and get out

AlunWynsKnee · 25/01/2020 00:41

Double garage stores the classic car, freezer, wine fridge and a ton of stuff.
