How do you look after your childs hair? What do I do with this.... (picture)

Dry. Thin. Brittle.

Likely due to a health condition but otherwise unsure.

He's three. It does need a cut but cutting it doesnt ever improve the condition of it.

What would you do?

Should add. It's not matted or tangled in any way

I used this when my kids were small and their hair was like that. And a gentle brush with the tangle teaser.

Also, it really doesn't look that bad! I did find that Revlon spray really helped the condition of my kids hair. When he's a bit older you could get it cut much shorter which might also help. But honestly, I've seen a lot worse.

If it's brittle or breaking I would possibly change to a satin or silk pillowcase. I have one for my curly hair and the difference is ridiculous, it's a cheap eBay one but works perfectly
Maybe a leave in conditioner spray

MyEnormousTurnip · 24/01/2020 16:15

Dd had hair like that at 3. I assumed from having a sweaty head at night and moving her head around when she slept. I used children’s spray conditioner on it.

I suppose a silk pillowcase might help but that might be a bit OTT Grin

Marmite27 · 24/01/2020 16:19

Spray conditioner/ detangler every morning and night. Wash and condition once a week. It doesn’t need washing as often as adult hair.

Tangle teaser and comb.

We use Johnson’s leave in conditioner spray, and child’s farm shampoo and conditioner. As eldest dd wants fancy hair I use tigi gel spray and style sexy play dirty dry wax spray. (£30 in two bottles Shock).

Bitofnamechanging · 24/01/2020 16:24

We basically don't wash it because we don't know what to do with it.

I'll get some leave in spray.

Trust me, it really does look awful. I've never met a child with such unhealthy looking hair at his age.

Can I get a silk pillow with a lion on it? Ds is pretty bonded to the lion on his pillow Grin

His brother is 12 months younger and also has fine hair but its thickening nicely and looks healthy

With my dd I wash her hair, condition it and dont always rinse the conditioner out. But only use the tiniest amount on wet hair comb through and dry. Then detangle spray and a soft tangle teezer brush

Bitofnamechanging · 24/01/2020 18:58

I'm going to pick up some stuff over the weekend. Left some conditioner in for ages before washing it out and put some oil I have for my straighteners on the back.

Thanks all

I guess you can try vitamins and a hair treatment like olaplex.

SoloMummy · 24/01/2020 19:13

Indian hair oil - loads of it, fir as many days as you can, reapplying each day until you wash out.

I would also try TRESemme Air Dry Curl Cream and though meant for curly hair this calms my Los hair that's similar to your Los.

TheNoiseHurts · 24/01/2020 19:22

I'm not sure but that's adorable.

I love the back of babies heads and I know you're little one is three but because the hair is fine and fuzzed up from laying/sleeping it's still adorable.

Whenever I'm at school and I see a kid tootle past with a fuzzy back of the head I always think it looks so adorable!

But poor parent having to comb that out or sort it out!

Make sure you're not rubbing it with a towel to dry it as this roughs up the hair.

What shampoo have you been using on it?

Before trying products that are not aimed at young kids I'd want to try the less toxic stuff first like:

child's farm unfragranced baby shampoo (this stuff leaves DD's hair the softest/shiniest of all but I do miss the fragrance!

Oilatum head to toe wash

Hipp organic baby wash (this one is nice and cheap - just a couple of quid)

I'd avoid anything with SLS or silicones in it. You don't want to be coating a young child's hair in silicones as they only wash out with harsh shampoos.

As an aside, the Aveeno baby wash dried out my DD's hair so that's not one I'd recommend.

Bitofnamechanging · 24/01/2020 20:38

@INeedNewShoes that's a really helpful thought- thank you. His system is pretty delicate so he probably needs some decent products.

Dh normally does bath time so I'll have to speak to him about whether he rubs ds1's hair. It's always been pretty bad but I thought it would resolve as he got older

Forgot to say, we use johnsons. I'm not sure how often dh washes his hair. Likely not often - probably less than weekly

DonPablo · 24/01/2020 20:42

I would get it cut quite short and do the least possible to it tbh. Very gentle shampoo (sls and paraben free) a bar might work if you lather it up in your hands rather than on his head and a mild conditioner.

Let strong hair grow and keep cutting it. Add a multivit into his diet. It'll do what it's going to do.

Looks so sweet Flowers

INeedNewShoes · 24/01/2020 20:42

It's definitely worth trying one of the more natural products instead of Johnson's.

I wash DD's hair 2 or 3 times a week. I might do it less but she still sometimes gets food in it!

deste · 24/01/2020 21:28

My DGD has hair like that at 17 months, it’s just because she is sweaty while sleeping.

I used Childs Farm the last twice and she hasn’t had it this week. I just realised when someone up thread mentioned the product.

If all else fails use the spray on conditioner. Apart from that, it really doesn’t matter.

whiskersonkittenss · 24/01/2020 21:31

If it's breaking then maybe some chewy vitamins for a few months will help the regrowth

Wellmet · 24/01/2020 21:38

Tbh, I don't really understand why you don't wash it! That really is a basic thing to do to improve the condition. I'd be washing it every time he had a bath, which was pretty much every day at that age.

FagAsh · 24/01/2020 21:42

Kids don't need their hair washed daily, nobody does! Try to leave 5 fay's between washes if you can and then use very gentle shampoo.

Biotin helps hair growth, not sure if kids are allowed it.

Bitofnamechanging · 24/01/2020 22:22

I can understand 17m but surely not aged 3? I dunno.

Massively appreciate all the tips.

I don't think he has a bath every day. Maybe x4 per week. I always bath them when I'm around which is maybe two evenings a week. I'm at work the other evenings and don't know what dh does - I might ask. I know for certain he doesnt bath them daily as he doesn't enjoy is (because of the daily nature of it)
