So dc is having an mri, I know he can’t have any metal on his clothes and I know I have to have empty pockets etc but can I have metal on me? Underwire bra, metal zip on jeans?? It doesn’t specify about the parent just child?

T-shirt and leggings/jogging bottoms for kids, parents don’t go in but depends on age?

Greenandcabbagelooking · 24/01/2020 07:07

No. It’s a giant magnet, no metal anywhere in the room.

The rooms can get pretty chilly, unlike everywhere else in a hospital. Layers are your friend!

You can wear your normal clothes if you accompany him into the room including jeans and underwired bras! Just no loose metal like coins anything in your pockets, hairclips etc

Wonderingwhyme · 24/01/2020 07:13

Are you sure stress?? Ha I need your name today! On the phone they said he must not have metal but didn’t mention me and the forms don’t mention me (I have to sign a form) just say no loose things in pockets ...

You get to take any clothes you have with metal on them off before you do in for an MRI and leave them in a locker or somewhere similar.

Like Green says, it's a huge magnet. None of the staff will have underwired bras on and you can't either.

2chooze · 24/01/2020 07:15

As a medic who sometimes had to go to the scanner with patients (albeit not for a few years) we had to empty our pockets of everything metallic/at risk (eg credit cards, which can get wiped by the magnet) but Thankfully they never made me take my underwired bra off. Which would not have been a good look at work! Was wearing scrubs so no zips.

sashh · 24/01/2020 07:17

Get your least favorite bra and take the wires out.

Actually you might have to take it off as they close with hooks and eyes.

Basically anything you can't have they will check for, and my information is out of date, things like pacemakers are now safe in MRI scanners.

Paperclip and an MRI

NutBiscuit · 24/01/2020 07:17

I had a head MRI recently and was allowed to keep my underwired bra on for the procedure. Can confirm the magnet did NOT rip my bra off!
So I think it must depend on where you go and what parts of you are going into the machine

PineappleDanish · 24/01/2020 07:17

I would imagine that if it's a problem the staff will give you scrubs or a couple of hospital gowns to change into.

stressbucket1 · 24/01/2020 07:18

Quill Bill that is for patients. I work in one I am very sure. Just no loose metal.

HippyChickMama · 24/01/2020 07:21

I've accompanied lots of patients for MRIs, an underwired bra is fine, as are your normal clothes if you're not actually being scanned. No metal hair clips, no items in pockets, you will have to sign a form to declare that you have no metal inside you (pacemakers etc) and they will also want to know you're not pregnant and the date of your last period.

Purpletoes · 24/01/2020 07:22

You can wear your normal clothes accompanying them. I work with them and I wear an underwire bra. My chest would not survive without it! 😉

Just make sure pockets are all empty and especially no clips or bo by puns in hair.

Good luck to you and your dc today.

Wonderingwhyme · 24/01/2020 07:25

So I have on jeans which have metallic zips and metal buttons.... top is fine but bra has metal..... my boots have metal buckles....

Won’t have anything in my hair.... what about earrings? I’ll take my Fitbit off as it has a magnet clasp and that will just go in my handbag in the locker......

The only non meta trousers I have are my pjs 🤣

I couldn't have any metal when ds had his. Earnings and belly bar removed and also had to take my glasses off. They did let me walk in in my glasses and then they took them as I can't see without them!

moo3moo · 24/01/2020 07:26

My son had one recently. I had jeans and underwire bra. Just no loose metal, earrings or hair clips.

Wonderingwhyme · 24/01/2020 07:32

I can’t not go in with him (he’s autistic) I had one at the same place but of course had to remove everything so that’s my only experience.... worse case will they def have a gown kicking around I could wear??

OP posts:
HippyChickMama · 24/01/2020 07:35

They will have gowns but you won't need it, honestly, just wear your normal clothes and leave off any loose metal items. If you're wearing jewellery that needs to be removed they will tell you and they will have a locker usually to store anything you have to take off. They will not make you get undressed or remove your bra unless you are the one being scanned.

MsJaneAusten · 24/01/2020 07:38

Oh love. Don’t worry about this. If you’re wearing the wrong things, they’ll give you a gown. It sounds like today is going to be stressful enough. Wear what you’re wearing. Go hug your boy, or drink an extra mug of coffee, or put your favourite song on the radio. I hope it all goes well Flowers

Wonderingwhyme · 24/01/2020 07:40

Thanks everyone that’s very kind. He’s been ill for a year and it’s been a battle to get paed to listen. He’s having small bowel mri then back in 2 weeks for OGD so I’m quite stressed!

When my son was 6 he had MRI, the consultant went in with him. Could that work, is your son being sedated for the scan?

Wonderingwhyme · 24/01/2020 07:47

No consultant is shit and has no understanding whatsoever in Autism!

purplepjamas · 24/01/2020 07:48

I went in with my daughter about 2 weeks ago,

You can wear normal clothes and bras don't worry.

It's just anything loose that you can't have like phones, glasses, hair clips.

And they ask about metal inside you from past operations and if you could be pregnant or not,

My daughter had a head scan and she was even wearing a hoody with a zip but we couldn't get it off because of the cannula in her hand. The man just pulled it to one side and said it would be fine.

Ginfordinner · 24/01/2020 07:50

I think it must vary between hospitals. I have accompanied DD to a number of scans, not just MRI, and I don't't recall not being able to not wear my normal clothes. This was st Sheffield children's hospital.

Is your DS capable of lying very still or will he need sedation?
