Portmerion

Is Portmerion village worth a visit? I've always wanted to go but I think I've romanticized it in my mind.
Thinking of going for a special birthday weekend with all the family and staying in the hotel.
I'm open to other suggestions too. Want it to be in the UK.
Thanks

It’s amazing. I love it. We went off season though so it wasn’t too crowded. It gets mental in the summer. The hotel is amazing to stay in. I love portmerion!

CalleighDoodle · 24/01/2020 07:08

Yes

Brahumbug · 24/01/2020 07:08

Portmerion is a beautiful place with an eclectic selection of buildings, rescued from different parts of the country. It is however expensive
Well worth a visit.

separatedandseething · 24/01/2020 07:11

It's beautiful but I'd go in good weather. Could be boring if you've not seen The Prisoner.

Izzabellasasperella · 24/01/2020 07:54

Yes. I really liked it, very quirky, the buildings are interesting and I would've loved to have stayed there. When we went they were filming a holiday programme and had the giant ball rolling around!

stringoflights · 24/01/2020 07:56

Thanks everyone. Sounds like it'll live up to how I imagine it.

Yes but like pp said you need good weather

stringoflights · 24/01/2020 08:01

Good weather is harder to arrange, but we are planning on summertime

Yes. Been a few times and never tire of it.

ShatnersWig · 24/01/2020 08:07

Yes. If you go height of season, make sure you go out for the days when it's busy and enjoy the village to yourself in the longer summer evenings. Or go slightly out of season when it's not so busy.

Fairylea · 24/01/2020 08:07

Well it’s pretty and quite fun to look round but there isn’t an awful lot there. We went in July. Spent about 1.5 hours having a look round and then had pizza in one of the cafes, that was nice. The train journey up the hill was disappointing to be honest, not sure what we expected but it was just a tiny little loop and the kids (aged 7 and 15 at the time) were a bit Confused.

The main little bit with the chess set and pool / pond is pretty but ds aged 7 was most upset he couldn’t actually touch or move the chess pieces! Too tempting!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 24/01/2020 08:08

Love it but only ever been for a day visit.

Agree you should go out during the day and enjoy the evenings there.

Dowser · 24/01/2020 09:17

It was pretty and pretty expensive to get in
Not worth a second visit

MikeUniformMike · 24/01/2020 09:22

It is Portmeirion. I've been more than once.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/01/2020 09:25

I loved it, well worth a visit. As a prisoner fan, I was a bit overexcited though.

ChicCroissant · 24/01/2020 09:26

I like it but have never stayed there due to the cost but it is an ambition to rent one of the houses or the tower (bedroom at the top would be ideal for DD).

We took DD there a few years ago and had a picnic on the beach. One time we went and there was a Prisoner convention on - we hadn't seen the programme at the time so that was a bit confusing tbh!

user1493494961 · 24/01/2020 09:32

It's beautiful, lovely walks but most of the buildings are holiday cottages. I think it's expensive to get in but a friend goes very often for a meal in the hotel and I believe then you don't pay the entrance fee.

stringoflights · 24/01/2020 09:55

@MikeUniformMike
Apologies
You are correct

Thanks. I speak Welsh so wouldn't say Portmerion. Smile
You need a sunny day and it is quite small, so you could plan other outings for the same day. Porthmadog is nice, but there are other places too.

ShinyGiratina · 24/01/2020 11:57

I've been a few times and had soggy days there. It's quirky and distinctive and the DCs like open air places where they can hide and explore.

MikeUniformMike · 24/01/2020 11:58

It's in a beautiful location and the views are stunning.

Destinysdaughter · 24/01/2020 12:04

It's a v magical place, well worth a visit!

Ted27 · 24/01/2020 12:06

Its somewhere I visited often as a child because my mum loved it. I took my teenager there last year and we had a great day despite the weather being miserable. We walked the coastal path and up into the woods, had a lovely cream tea, it was interesting spotting all the quirky statues and sculptures hidden in odd places. The recording of the architect about his inspiration and ambition for the project was interesting

Belindabelle · 24/01/2020 13:17

We went for a long weekend last Easter.

DS and I arrived by train and were met by courtesy car at the station. DH joined us later on. Our accommodation was in one of the village houses and we had our meals in the hotel. They can transport you around the village in a golf cart if you are unable to tackle the hills.
The food and service in the hotel was superb.
We also had a lovely meal in the Castle restaurant one evening.

Some of the village accommodation is self catering with full kitchens. We only had a small fridge and tea making facilities as we stayed half board. You can also stay in the hotel but I loved being in one of buildings.

It does get busy with day-trippers but I didn't find it too bad. You have it all to yourself between 6pm-10am. Lovely area with lots to do during the day to get away from the crowds. Fantastic walks along the coast past the lighthouse and up into the woods.

It was a bucket list item for DH who is a fan of the Prisoner but DS and I enjoyed it too. We watched a few episodes before we went and the programme is always on the tv there.

Kazzyhoward · 24/01/2020 13:21

It's OK. We've been, but it's not really up our street at all. Yes, some pretty/quirky buildings, but that's about it. We were in and out within an hour - quick walk around, a few pictures and that was it.

We didn't stay in the hotel, so can't comment on whether that was anything special.
