Self certification when off work help

DS (19) has been ill and phoned in sick today, well he called last night to let them know and then today he called to say he wouldn't be in tomorrow. He saw the GP today as he has actually been ill since Sunday but only works T/F/S/S so he managed his shift on Sunday as he was just starting to feel unwell.

His work have told him to get a self cert from the GP but as far as I remember they stopped giving them out years ago. My memory could be fuzzy though! I thought you downloaded the form and it covered you for 7 days. His work are saying if he of off for 3 he needs to take a form in.

Can anyone tell me what he actually needs to do? Also, DS is obviously unwell so I would have to take the form in for him, is this ok?

We have them in my surgery but they are old ones and they've been photocopied to an inch of their lives so they look pretty rough. When I tried to get a tidy copy off the internet it was impossible because you have to fill it out online then print it out. I expect this prevents crappy handwriting causing problems.

dementedpixie · 23/01/2020 20:01

He can self certify for the first 7 days.

Greydrabday · 23/01/2020 20:04

Yes self certify for the first 7 days. He doesn't need a sick note from the doctor before the 7 days is up.

Thanks demented I did read that. It basically says the opposite to what he is being told by his employer. So their policy is to get a note from the Doc after 3 days but the GOV site says you do it online when you go back

His employer should supply a self cert form.

NeedAnExpert · 23/01/2020 20:05

So their policy is to get a note from the Doc after 3 days

They can’t insist on that. It’s a statutory thing, not something companies can do or not.

cuckooken · 23/01/2020 20:06

grey. They were not asking for a sick note. They want a self cert if he is off 3 days and they told him to get it from the GP.

OP posts:
cuckooken · 23/01/2020 20:07

troys. Thanks / I can only imagine the reason in know they don't hold them anymore is because I have heard them say so. I will call and ask in the morning anyway, just to cover things

OP posts:
NeedAnExpert · 23/01/2020 20:07

They CANNOT demand he gets it from a GP.

dementedpixie · 23/01/2020 20:09

It's called a self certificate because he does it himself so a GP is not involved

cuckooken · 23/01/2020 20:09

They CANNOT demand he gets it from a GP.

I will ask anyway, but I'm almost 100% sure theGP doesn't have them anymore - just thought I would ask as i have never needed to deal with this for a good 20 years!

You would think, but it was always cake self certification and you definitely used to get the forms at the GP. I don't know if his work are behind the times or if our GO should have some as troys surgery does or if they are just being ridiculous!

I'm leaning toward ridiculous Grin

Tuesday was his first day of sickness and a self cert will cover him up for Monday. If he needs the next Tuesday off then he needs a doctors note.

He won't be paid for the first three days of sickness and should get x amount SSP for the 4th day he missed. Think they are confusing the 7 days with the 3 unpaid perhaps

LIZS · 23/01/2020 20:14

Self certification is not a gp fitnote. He may be able to download one from company intranet or hr, and complete either on return or after 5 days whichever is earlier.

Self certification is not a gp fitnote.

I know this.

He may be able to download one from company intranet or hr, and complete either on return or after 5 days whichever is earlier.

He can download one here, at home. However his work are telling him that he needs to collect one from his GP surgery and hand it in if he is off for 3 days. That's the problem.

The employer has the form for the first 7 days. No need to see GP.
He will need to see his GP after 7 days if he is still unwell.

Not fussed about the pay aspect, he is upset that they are giving him different information and he cannot get a self cert from the GP if they don't have them. He also shouldn't be asked to take it in if he is off for 3 days, but company policy said he does.

That's not what I was saying. They told him to get the form from the GP. Not to see a GP.

Sorry read the T as Tuesday having worked the sunday before.

cabbageking · 23/01/2020 20:29

He can copy it and email it in and give then the actual copy when he returns to work.

cabbageking · 23/01/2020 20:31

You can download one from GOV uk

cuckooken · 23/01/2020 20:37

Thanks cabbage. The problem was that the employer told DS to get one from the GP surgery.

OP posts:
taybert · 23/01/2020 20:38

They’re probably just out of date and mixing stuff up. Which is crap but not unusual. Has he tried to give them the downloaded form?

taybert · 23/01/2020 20:40

Direct them to this: www.gov.uk/taking-sick-leave

Dozer · 23/01/2020 20:41

They can’t require a GP form for under 7 days off.
