Self certification when off work help

DS (19) has been ill and phoned in sick today, well he called last night to let them know and then today he called to say he wouldn't be in tomorrow. He saw the GP today as he has actually been ill since Sunday but only works T/F/S/S so he managed his shift on Sunday as he was just starting to feel unwell.

His work have told him to get a self cert from the GP but as far as I remember they stopped giving them out years ago. My memory could be fuzzy though! I thought you downloaded the form and it covered you for 7 days. His work are saying if he of off for 3 he needs to take a form in.

Can anyone tell me what he actually needs to do? Also, DS is obviously unwell so I would have to take the form in for him, is this ok?

Just sounds like they have gotten confused with the self cert process, that's all.

cuckooken · 23/01/2020 20:46

They can’t require a GP form for under 7 days off.

They are not asking for one.

I must have written a really badly worded OP Blush

taybert

I totally would. But this is DS first job, he feels awful as it is and he isn't about to go head to head with them!

Has he tried to give them the downloaded form?

No he only called them a couple of hours ago, I am going to take it in on Saturday if he isn't better by then: fingers crossed he is

macca yes, definitely confused. Unfortunately I didn't know if it was the norm for companies to have their own policy requiring the self very to be in on day 3: it seems not!

this is a very funny thread.

the exact meaning of a self cert form is that the gp doesnt have to be involved, the individual certifies themself off sick.

they are not available at the gp.

No, definitely not after 3 days, it covers you for 7 as you said. Just a thought but could they be asking for it early with it being close to the end of the month and for a payroll cut off or something similar? E.g. if he doesn't get full sick pay they will need to adjust his pay to SSP for the shifts he has missed this week. I work in HR and from experience payroll always prefer to adjust pay before the employee is paid, rather than claw back an overpayment the following month.

Either way, you can definitely still download the form and it definitely covers him for 7 days Smile

Op everyone understands you, no need To keep repeating it! People are just saying his employer are wrong in what they’re asking for, and they’re explaining the proper process!

Indeed.

they are not available at the gp.

They used to be, also a PP says her surgery still gives the out.

I don't know why you think this is a funny thread. I am just trying to find out if the company policy can demeans more than the basic law really.

So many people saying he can self cert. we know. His employer knows. It was in the OP.

I think I wrote it badly because people seemed to think I was saying his employer was asking for a fit note, not a self cert.

Sorry for repeating myself I was just replying to people who took the time to offer help.
