Interesting board games.

Has any one got any suggestions for some board games that arent particularly mainstream.
I'm looking for some new ideas away from the old classics. Ideally for 14 years old and older and 2-6 players.

Articulate is great

PandaG · 22/01/2020 23:54

Settlers of Catan? Base game for 3-4, can adapt for 2 and buy extension for 5-6.

Ticket to Ride works for 2-5, Europe my personal favourite.

Colt Express unusual 3d game

Thurn und Taxis 2-4or possibly 5 players. Is about German postal system. Sounds dire but is a good tactical game.

What sort of games do you like already? We have lots of entry- mid level strategy games and play a lot...

GetTheSprinkles · 23/01/2020 00:08

Highly recommend Code Names for someone that age.
Cranium is good fun.
And a 2nd vote for Articulate.

Labyrinth is a good one

LiveatCityHall · 23/01/2020 00:10

Ticket To Ride. We bought it at xmas and it's a great one! There are loads of different versions too.

Narcheska · 23/01/2020 00:13

Ticket to ride

Code names

Exploding kittens

Pandemic

Pandemic legacy season 1

Carcssoson

Quadorpolis

Forbidden island

Howmanysleepsnow · 23/01/2020 00:20

For 2 people, Hive. Easy to pick up, gameplay short enough we can take turns to play the winner, intelligent and lots of fun.

BettyUnderswoob · 23/01/2020 00:25

We (aged 10 - 55) like Labyrinth, Carcassonne, Bananagrams and There’s a Moose in the House

SeaToSki · 23/01/2020 00:30

Risk or Diplomacy if they are a chatty bunch

ThePurpleMoose · 23/01/2020 00:33

Takenoko is fun - it revolves around a bamboo-growing gardener and a bamboo-chomping panda with the aim to grow/collect different colours of bamboo for points. It also has an expansion pack called Takenoko Chibis which introduces a lady panda and babies Grin

BarbaraGordon · 23/01/2020 07:37

Do you have a board game cafe anywhere near you? They'll have a huge selection to try out and the staff will be able to recommend something and help you get started. Otherwise I second pandemic, code names and ticket to ride.

Shoxfordian · 23/01/2020 07:42

Pandemic and pandemic legacies are amazing
The legacy stories are really good. I've played legacy 1 and my husband and I are doing legacy 2 now. Probably best to get the hang of pandemic first before you do legacy though.

Chemenger · 23/01/2020 07:46

Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride and Articulate are our current favourites.

ScribblyGum · 23/01/2020 07:55

Terraforming Mars is excellent. Takes an hour or so to play and lots of different strategies you can take to win.

Agricola is another immersive game that both my teenagers enjoy. Building a farm/house/family using various resources. Another one with a hundred different strategies you can adopt to win.

If you’ve watched the TV series FireFly then the board game of that is incredible. Takes half a day to play mind and you need a big table.

CormoranStrike · 23/01/2020 07:58

Ticket to ride Europe is good

ScribblyGum · 23/01/2020 07:58

If you want a relatively quick, simple but beautiful little game then Sagrada is wonderful. Creating stained glass windows with coloured cubes on templates. Quite mathematical and strategic. You’re playing against yourself as much as the other players. It’s one of the least stressful games in our collection and the finished ‘windows’ are just lovely.

horseymum · 23/01/2020 08:03

I second many of the above- Carcassonne, ticket to ride, codename s, fluxx, exploding kittens, cortex, Alhambra, pandemic. There are so many out there beyond monopoly. I second going to a cafe/ shop as the staff are generally very enthusiastic ( geeky?!) and will really help you find good ones to suit.

DamnItsSevenAM · 23/01/2020 08:06

Wingspan, Tokaido, Unearth, Mysterium, Machi Koro, Quacks of Quedlinburg?

Hazelnutlatteplease · 23/01/2020 08:09

Lords of Waterdeep (brilliant at either 2 player or 6)
Colt Express (good at 2 or 6 but shorter)
Plague inc (not six)
Pueto Rico

Yy to all the modern standards Catan (can get a bit expensive for 5+players but weve played it 7 plsyer)Ticket to Ride Europe (not 6)

If you want Coop get Sub terra not forbidden island. Its newer and betterer and plsys more people
We like takenoko but id havd thought its a bit Young also not 6 player

Zombiecide if you want a bit ticket game. Played it 7 player. Really brilliant game

PurpleDaisies · 23/01/2020 08:11

I agree with lots of these, particularly Colt Express, Code Names, Forbidden Island and Pandemic which are favourites here.

I’ll add
Azul
Camel Up
Jaipur (two player)
Hanabi
Lost Cities

WeHaveSnowdrops · 23/01/2020 08:14

Ticket to Ride in all its incarnations.

Tinofcurses · 23/01/2020 08:22

Our current favourites (me and 15yo ds)

Scythe, for 1-5 players
7 wonders duel, for 2 players only
Unstable unicorns

We also quite like a Catan card game which works well for 2 players. I think it's called struggle for Catan

ApplesinmyPocket · 23/01/2020 08:44

Ticket to Ride (ours is the USA version) - we love this game! first saw it suggested on MN some years ago and bought it because of that (wish I could thank that poster) - never regretted it. We have 4-5 players aged 30-79.

DD's partner brought us Klask at Christmas. Not a board game, more a table-top magnetic-ball game. It was great fun and nicely designed. I recommend it, but obviously it's 2-player so you have to organise a tournament with some players sitting out and watching till their go. Short rounds though so we didn't find this a problem.

Got a new one at Christmas - Chameleon - won game of the year a couple of years back. It's a 'describing something in words'/word association game, the trick being that ONE person doesn't know the round's assigned word, and has to pretend to to try and escape being rumbled. It's quite fun and immediate to learn, with very quick rounds which appeals to me.

AnnaBegins · 23/01/2020 08:47

Code names and Concept are brilliant

LadyBrienne · 23/01/2020 15:47

Another one for Labyrinth - great game that we play regularly

Telestrations is also an absolute hoot and always a hit but you need at least 5 or 6+ for it be brilliant
