Nighttime hobbies at home

cjt110 · 22/01/2020 15:00

I'd like to get into a hobby, at home, for in the evenings.

I already go out to 2 activities on a Weds and Fri eve so something at home, in my pjs once DS is in bed would be fantastic.

I've tried jigsaws and my brain can't handle them.

I'm usless at knitting/crochet/crafty stuff.

I don't think I've watched TV (as in not ondemand) for months.

What bits do you guys do at home?

Well I waste a lot of time on MN, reddit and FB :o

I play guitar a bit. I just do chords and look them up on ultimate guitar and I don't care if I sound terrible, that's fun.

I also have a DSLR camera, which is a huge outlay, I was very lucky to be given it, but I sometimes spend time editing photos in the evening, there is something fun about tweaking various settings to get the right outcome.

Baking/batch cooking could be fun?

Playing on my PS4 or switch is my favourite hobby. I also like the odd Lego kit but they're a bit too expensive and the dc want to help.

Colouring is pretty stress-free or drawing

cjt110 · 23/01/2020 13:22

I guess I do do some cooking - often once DS is in bed, with music on or a podcast.

We got a digital piano for one of the DC recently, and I'm teaching myself how to play a few chords and simple pieces. The beauty of a digital piano is the volume/headphones option, so I don't wake anyone with my bum notes.

I enjoy yoga (you tube videos as a guide), reading, and practising drawing/calligraphy writing. I'm really not artistic or very good, but I find it relaxing and it's just for my eyes and hobby not public consumption so I don't care. I have a book called How to draw inky wonderlands which is great for me.

I would like more variety though to stop me mindlessly scrolling through my phone, so watching this thread for more ideas

Washing up, cleaning and housework (quiet housework). Not my favourite hobbies.

ExpletiveDelighted · 23/01/2020 13:42

I'm learning a language using the Duolingo app.

Sort photos on a laptop and make them into albums and photobooks.

Crosswords and sudoku.

Write postcards to old folks homes (via a FB group called Postcards of Kindness).

Read the newspaper & do the crossword and puzzles. Every so often I will treat myself to Lego ( VW Beetle, Camper, Mini etc). Have a glass of wine & watch News 24. I have some tapetrybptojects in progress which I started at least 10 years ago. It's a very dull life.

GrimDamnFanjo · 23/01/2020 16:17

I play the Sims, surf, read and cook.
Would like some new ideas too.

SweetPetrichor · 23/01/2020 16:53

How about tarantula keeping?! I'm new to the hobby and already while away many an hour watching them go about their business and they tend to be more active at night. Got me over my fear of spiders! A year ago I would cry if I came across a house spider. Today I held a 6cm legspan tarantula and gushed over how sweet she was.

I also do Duolingo...which is more normal.

ritzbiscuits · 23/01/2020 16:53

Read, yoga with Adriene on You Tube?

Family history research.
Jewellery making.
If you have a garden, then reading gardening books for inspiration.

If all else fails, watch one of these channels (Dave, Quest, Yesterday) and get interested in daft quizzes, engineering & how stuff is made, antiques, car restoration, digging for gold, train journeys, old buildings, history, etc.

painting by numbers, I am crap but the pictures, including paints etc are very cheap and are designed so they look ok even if you don't keep in the lines.

There also seems to be a new version, kind of, sticking coloured beads by numbers. These are cheap too and people say even their kids are getting great results. I am going to given one of these a go next.

Lyricallie · 23/01/2020 17:24

We play the switch together and fiance does model painting. I like to read and browse YouTube. Also I've been planning our wedding so that's been taking up my evenings recently.

ColourMyDreams · 23/01/2020 18:46

I do my knitting or crocheting, read and bugger about on the natternet if one or another of the kids haven't dropped in.
Sometimes I might even talk to the husband.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 23/01/2020 19:17

Like pp's I'm refreshing and learning new vocabulary on Duplingo and Babbel.
I do family research (which in my case ties in with things like the history of coal mining), I enjoy reading and "the great courses" on audible.

Camomila · 23/01/2020 19:24

I like crafty/arty things like drawing and sewing but I think its better eye wise to do them in natural light (I wear glasses and get migraines)

I like watching documentarys in the evening and cooking more interesting dinners at the weekend.

TeaLibrary · 23/01/2020 19:40

If you have the space, I cannot recommend fish tanks highly enough. Loads of pottering involved with fish tanks and then you get to waste hours staring into them 😊😊

SimonJT · 24/01/2020 17:54

Piano
Weights (I have a mini home gym)
Xbox/switch
Lego
Reading, mainly about theoretical physics

sniffysnifferson · 24/01/2020 18:32

Make candles
Bake cakes, savories
