Do you give children vitamins?

I feel bad as I stopped giving my 4.5 year old vitamins a while ago and have just read I should still be doing so. He eats a wide variety of fruit and veg and other foods so I didn’t think he needed it.....what do others do?

I've never given them to dd (5), i was never advised to and there's no way she would take them as she is very fussy about medicine and doesn't eat sweets sk couldn't give her the sweet type ones.

Shelley54 · 21/01/2020 09:41

I give mine (nearly four and nearly two) the liquid vitamins in the bath each night. They eat well but it's a rubber stamp that they've got the right stuff. Once DS1 is 4 I'll move him into something better suited.

Urkiddingright · 21/01/2020 09:41

You don’t really need to at all if they have a varied diet. I give my eldest DC them because he is a hugely fussy eater and I worry about it.

Mine have had a multi vitamin and a cod liver oil capsule every day. Theyre now in their teens.

TeenPlusTwenties · 21/01/2020 09:43

No never. I aimed to give them a balanced diet though.

horrayforharoldlloyd · 21/01/2020 09:45

Everybody north of Madrid ought to take Vit D supplements as we don't get enough sunlight

drivingtofrance · 21/01/2020 09:47

No. Never did. Ate a varied diet, lots of veggies.

He's a fit and healthy 22 yo now.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 21/01/2020 09:48

They are old enough to take some on their own, but it was Vit D when they were young.

Wasail · 21/01/2020 09:48

DS gets vitamin D during the winter and regular cod liver oil.

Helini · 21/01/2020 09:49

Ds is going through that major toddler fussy phase so I give him multivitamins/minerals, DHA fish oil and if he has a funny tummy I give him probiotics. I get them all from Holland and Barret. It's like a little pipette and you give then 5ml a day.

Vitamins can't hurt them if they have too much (except for Vit A I think but nothing that's in vitamins targeted for children) it's just a waste of money because they wee out the excess that their body dosn't need. Even if he had a balanced diet I'd give him vitamins for peace of mind

Damntheman · 21/01/2020 09:49

Mine get a multivitamin gummy, a flouride tablet and a spoonful of cod liver oil every day. They need the Vit D up here where we don't see the sun for a few months every year :)

TheCumbrian · 21/01/2020 09:50

Yes but for the vitamin D, everything else is just a bonus. We live in the far North of the country and whilst they practically live outside they are well wrapped up and definitely don't get enough sunshine.

Damntheman · 21/01/2020 09:50

Too much Vit D can be pretty bad, it causes a build up of calcium in the blood which can make you pretty ill, but you've got to overdose pretty hard to hit that point.

InDubiousBattle · 21/01/2020 09:50

I give my dc a vitamin daily. My 6 year old ds would probably be fine but my 4 year old is a fussy eater so whilst I give her good food she doesn't have a balanced diet really.

CastawayMay · 21/01/2020 09:58

Mine get a vitamin gummy sweet when I remember, so probably about twice a week. I figure it's better than nothing.

peachgreen · 21/01/2020 10:00

Yes, a multivitamin and vitamin D drops in her water.

BlackInk · 21/01/2020 10:02

Mine (7 and 10) have a gummy multivitamin with omega most days. They eat a decent variety of food, but they are vegetarian so I'm just ensuring they're getting enough B12 etc.

Delatron · 21/01/2020 10:05

Everybody, including children should supplement with vitamin D in the winter. You can’t get it from the sun between October and March and you wouldn’t get enough from diet. The Better You spray is very good.

I also give omega 3. As although they east some oily fish, we don’t eat it twice a week as recommended.

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/01/2020 10:07

My DS has a daily multi vitamin but that is because he has autism and eats a very restricted beige diet unfortunately. I hope it will change as he grows and I do encourage him but in the meantime it gives me some peace of mind.

2020BetterBeBetter · 21/01/2020 10:10

Yes, for the vitamin d if nothing else. Although there are plenty of ways other than drops or vitamin sweets to give - various fortified milks or foods.

Deadliestlampshade · 21/01/2020 10:13

The NHS advice is to supplement up to 5 - that’s why I feel bad!

dc get vit d3 every day.
and magnesium (as epsom salts in the bath) after strenuous activity.

MWNA · 21/01/2020 10:37

Daily Haliborange and a squirt of vitamin D.

Beelzebop · 21/01/2020 10:38

Standard advice is good multivitamin daily up till 5.

EspressoX10 · 21/01/2020 10:43

Absolutely need to give them Vitamin D in the UK.
